Executive Summary Operating standards, business management strategies, and efficiency frameworks have become increasingly important as enterprises of every type expand their competitive reach internationally and strive to squeeze out as much productivity as possible. Success in these endeavors requires a procedural enforcement system and enterprise IT systems that can share data so that business processes can be simplified. In most companies dealing with the actual design and ongoing management of a physical product, Product Lifecycle Management is arguably the glue that links between the enterprise applications and enterprise data. Agile Product Lifecycle Management acts as a means to integrate data, people, processes and business systems into a single point of control and monitoring. It acts as the backbone for retaining and managing product information and as a computerized mechanism for exerting operational discipline in managing the entire lifecycle of a product from conception to manufacture, service, and obsolescence. The very nature of PLM, with its requirements to store, index retrieve and manage vast amounts of widely varied documents, demands a great deal of computing capability. Furthermore, its position of criticality in the enterprise requires reliability and ease of maintenance as well as the ability to scale quickly. Up until recently, meeting those requirements meant adding servers. The Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management, however, focuses on ideal, complementary hardware, OS, virtualization, middleware and software configurations that eliminate wasteful sprawl and unnecessary equipment. As a result of this focus on smart, tight integration, Oracle Optimized Solutions result in tangible reductions of operating costs. This whitepaper will summarize in clear language the compelling reasons for choosing to deploy the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management. 1
Introduction Demand for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) applications can scale rapidly, forcing IT managers to expand system resources quickly to meet increasing workloads. As more servers are deployed or more processing power is added to existing servers, a frequent result is server sprawl. Many IT managers are looking to consolidate this environment to reduce complexity, improve utilization, and reduce costs for server and storage hardware, system administration, hardware and software maintenance fees, and power and cooling expenditures. Oracle Engineers have designed an extremely cost-effective means of virtualizing and consolidating Oracle s Agile Product Lifecycle Management into the smallest footprint possible while delivering sufficient performance for up to 800 users. The Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management provides a well-tested, highly validated architecture that is designed to balance optimal performance with low total cost of ownership (TCO) and high reliability. The solution utilizes the powerful Oracle Sun Fire X4800 M2 server to run the entire Agile Product Lifecycle Management infrastructure in a single virtualized system. Storage is also simplified with Oracle s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance, resulting in a solution that enables the following business benefits: Reduce deployment time and risk due to the pre-tested environment and simplified deployment of a single hardware server with the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 system. Improved user productivity as a result of higher service levels due to the enterprise-class reliability of the Sun Fire X4800 M2 server and the Oracle Solaris operating system. Significant cost savings from faster deployment and lower operating costs. Additional technical information about this solution, including best practices for configuring the environment can be found in the companion technical white paper. 2
Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management A Business White Paper Solution Overview The primary advantage of any Oracle Optimized Solution is the benefit of a fully-documented, tested, hardened and validated recipe for a proven and relevant application well-suited to the customer. Configurations of hardware, OS, virtualization and software are vetted and varied to create a Small, Medium and Large sizing with corresponding performance and behavior expectations. Using the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management speeds up time to deployment and removes much of the speculation around installation of Agile Product Lifecycle Management. Fully documenting and testing configurations with optimal settings eliminates incompatible settings and the vast majority of other deployment complications that can add substantial, expensive manhours and increase the potential for mistakes and delays. It is no secret that x86 architectures have become a common element of the overall IT footprint. Bottlenecks and performance problems are frequently addressed by the addition of inexpensive or recycled hardware using commodity operating systems rather than investigating and alleviating the underlying cause of a problem. Throwing more physical resources at the problem, while expedient, rapidly leads to the increase in operational risk through the introduction of unnecessary complexity. Moreover, it diverts valuable power, cooling, and space resources from other would-be projects. Built upon an N-tier J2EE architecture, Oracle s Agile Product Lifecycle Management is well-suited to deployment as a high-performance, consolidated solution that is optimized for favorable acquisition and operational costs. The multiple tiers of Agile Product Lifecycle Management architecture are usually deployed across several servers in a production environment. As shown in Figure 1, the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management consolidates all of the software components onto a single Sun Fire X4800 M2 server using Oracle Solaris Containers. Figure 1. The Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management consolidates all of the primary components of the environment onto a single hardware platform. In addition to the Sun Fire X4800 M2 server, the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management includes a hardware load balancer and a Sun ZFS Storage Appliance. The hardware load balancer enables clients to communicate with the application server in a secure fashion 3
while spreading the workload evenly across the application tier of Agile Product Lifecycle Management for optimal throughput. The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance provides high performance storage for PLM data files, which tend to be large files. Because the storage appliance is network attached, it enables PLM data to be easily accessible from any authorized PLM client throughout the enterprise. Virtualization with Oracle Solaris Containers Virtualization has helped to enable both efficiency and expandability, enabling functions to be separated and stratified logically, as opposed to physically. However, the typical caveat of virtualization is the overhead and stability of the virtualization technology. And often there is the matter of vendor support. There are, for instance, several caveats surrounding the support and use of third-party virtualization with the Oracle Database. Generally, deployment of a production Oracle Database on a hypervisor-based x86 solution is ill-advised. Oracle Solaris Containers offers a proven, fully supported means of virtualizing the Oracle Database in a production environment. Oracle Solaris Containers is a no-cost virtualization technology that can isolate application services within a single instance of Oracle Solaris, enforced by kernel level separation between each container. Oracle Solaris Containers are designed so that faults in one container have no impact on applications or service instances running in other containers. Containers are an OS-level type of virtualization, making it inherently hardware-aware, OS-aware, and highly compatible with anything the underlying Solaris OS can address such as device drivers. In addition, it imposes very little performance penalty on its virtual machines while being extremely quick to set up and provision. One of the most compelling aspects of Oracle Solaris Containers, and the primary reason it is chosen as the virtualization technology is its unique ease of use. High-performance OS-level virtualization technologies generally operate using arcane, complicated commands. Oracle Solaris Containers, however possesses a simple, direct and easy-to-learn configuration and manipulations interface. These commands are easily scripted and automated. Administrators with a little Solaris knowledge can easily build a working virtual machine with only a few minutes of study and attempts. Reducing Deployment Time and Risk When deploying an enterprise solution such as PLM, getting up and running quickly is critical to the success of the project. Every extra week spent on deployment not only postpones the potential benefits of the project, but also causes increased costs and has the potential to negatively affect user adoption rates. The Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management can help accelerate deployment and reduce risk by simplifying deployment in each of the following areas: Architecture and design The solution provides a functional architecture with configuration sizing guidelines for small, medium, and large installations that have been proven handle specific workloads. Hardware acquisition A single hardware platform with defined configurations for small, medium, and large installations simplifies the process of ordering hardware and can reduce hardware 4
acquisition time substantially as the hardware configuration steps are unnecessary for Oracle Optimized Solutions. Hardware setup Hardware assembly and setup is minimized since there is only one server and the storage appliance can be deployed in minutes. The risk of unforeseen problems is nearly eliminated with this simple configuration that has been pre-tested. Functional testing Costs associated with the qualification of the PLM solution and related risks can be reduced by leveraging a pre-tested configuration. Enterprise-Class Reliability PLM is often a mission-critical application, especially for certain classes of users such as engineers and designers. The Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management can help keep users productive through enterprise-class reliability features that enable high service levels. Product Lifecycle Management functions are generally regarded as crucially interconnected with other enterprise functions, such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). This interrelatedness typically results in PLM systems being implemented on Enterprise-grade hardware with hardened, full-featured operating systems. Yet for a range of reasons, there are frequently corporate pressures pushing for standardization on or increasing footprint of x86 servers. Fortunately, Oracle Solaris provides a proven enterprise-class operating system for x86 environments. It provides a secure and reliable a consolidation platform that offers the following advantages: Oracle Solaris is specifically designed to provide x86-centric organizations with a responsive, welldesigned OS sharing nearly all features with Oracle s SPARC-based enterprise-grade servers. It is the only OS for x86 that provides such consistency of function between completely different hardware. Oracle Solaris Containers is unique in that it is an OS-level virtualization scheme with low overhead and better performance than hypervisor-based virtualization. Rather than creating an abstracted pseudo-cpu and memory as a hypervisor-based virtualization scheme would use, Oracle Solaris Containers bypasses the overhead associated with switching between real and virtual resources. Instead, each containers functions as a part of Solaris itself, providing Virtual Machines with all the native capabilities and speed of the main OS while also providing the ability to allocate and partition system resources. Virtual Machines run in the same Oracle Solaris OS and thus have access to every hardware feature the Host OS does. There is inherent compatibility with all devices and drivers supported by Oracle Solaris. The X4800 M2 inherits all the important enterprise-grade features leading to higher reliability, ultimately resulting in better uptime. Additionally, its modest physical footprint still provides a great deal of room for scalability and added total capacity. 5
Cost Savings Product Lifecycle Management, by definition, wraps business logic around assets, such as technical drawings and engineering documents and thus demands a great deal of manageability, maintainability and expandability in order to contain costs. Otherwise, PLM quickly becomes a sunk cost rather than an active savings function. One of the most direct means of saving operating costs and squeezing every drop of productivity from PLM is in storage. Drawings, documents and other assets demand massive amounts of storage and each revision or modification represents a growing demand on storage. Maintaining and managing those critical assets at the data-level is extremely important. In other words, managing where and how the data resides on physical storage media affects overall PLM application performance and data availability, and integrity. In short, storage must be simple to configure and maintain, and must be massively scalable so that data retrieval operations can be performed quickly. The last thing an administrator of a critical PLM system needs is the distraction of tedious storage management, which quickly adds to a PLM system s TCO. Storage needs to be very easy to monitor, flexible in how it can connect to compute nodes and very easy to understand. The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 was chosen as a high-capacity, high-performance storage unit to meet these needs. Most notable in its administrative capabilities is its interface, known in the industry as intuitive and easy to for an administrator to create sophisticated setups without the specialized knowledge of a dedicated storage professional. The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 is also ideal in its ability to scale to 1.15 Petabytes of storage perfect for dealing with the enormous (and often dynamically growing) demands of a PLM installation. The ability of the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 to easy scale both capacity and performance results in a cost-effective growth path as the PLM system grows. Since storage is frequently the bottleneck for PLM performance, storage performance is key to delivering high service levels. The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 delivers the requisite performance by increasing I/O throughout by means of Solid State Disks to increase read cache. The retrieval of large files and documents can be sped up by as much as 50% or greater in some cases as the limitations of data retrieval from a mechanical device are eliminated. Storage capacity, ease of deployment and speed of retrieval are directly attributable to a cost savings that can be realized in only a short time. By merit of its ability to remote replicate data, the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 Appliance adds further reliability. Remote replication is more than a simple backup measure. It is an enabling technology that simplifies business continuity and disaster recovery without adding undue overhead. When adding together these positive attributes of the Sun 7420 storage appliance, the operational savings become readily evident. Total compute capacity, in terms of performance, reliability and scalability is the second most important aspect of maintaining the cost savings of a PLM solution. How much total user capacity and how many concurrent tasks a server can support directly affects productivity and thus cost efficiency. It simply won t do to hit the upper capacity of the solution at critical times. And just about 6
anytime is critical. So it goes that the computational performance must be adequate at base configuration but also extremely powerful at the upper limits, without the need to complicate expandability by adding servers. To that end, a PLM server must have a generous chassis and be extremely easy to upgrade. Since there is no telling when an enterprise might expand its operations, there is simply no telling when such upgrades might be needed. It s certainly better and most costeffective to have the potential for upgradeability and not use it than to need it and not have it. The X4800 M2, as the hardware centerpiece of the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Management, is ideally suited to the task of providing high performance, scalable and resilient PLM services in a single chassis to meet the full range of workloads. The modularity of the architecture allows for easy CPU upgrades to as many as 80 cores and massive RAM capacity, making this server ideal as a virtualization platform. Additionally, the X4800 M2 hot swap capabilities contribute greatly to total availability and RAS. The third cost saving measure built into this Oracle Optimized Solution is consolidation. Modern computing resource consolidation is generally a function of virtualization and properly, fine-grained resource allocation. In this configuration, Oracle Solaris Containers, the native virtualization technology built into Oracle Solaris, is used as the means of virtualizing. The most recognizable cost savings aspect of using Oracle Solaris Containers is its inclusion in the Oracle Solaris OS, without additional charge or licensing entanglements. Third-party virtualization products charge a licensing premium, create support problems (the Oracle Database may not be supported under certain virtualization schemes), and may even increase costs by increasing the number of OS licenses required. Oracle Solaris Containers, however, is a native and fully supported feature of Oracle Solaris possessing no such costly caveats or disclaimers. Conclusion As IT operational cost pressures converge with increased RAS and performance requirements, the Oracle Optimized Solution for Agile Product Lifecycle Manager adds substantial and tangible operational value in the form fully validated and peer-reviewed configurations of hardware capable of extremely dense server consolidation. The time consuming guesswork of architecting, sizing and fieldtesting is nearly eliminated. The X4800 M2 inherits all the important enterprise-grade features leading to higher reliability, ultimately resulting in better uptime. Additionally, its modest physical footprint still provides a great deal of room for scalability and added total capacity. 7
