2 Introduction to Power BI: Level 1 Course Overview What is Power BI for Excel and Power BI Desktop? Power BI is best known to users as set of tools embedded in Excel and Power BI Desktop for modelling and reporting. Power BI allows users to build maintainable and automated solutions for financial modelling, reporting, dashboards, and data analysis. Power BI was first introduced as Power Query and Power Pivot Add-Ins for Excel 2010, and has been a core product feature since Excel Why Power BI? Analysts often work with large, complex and diverse data sets to build financial models, create management and financial reports and provide data analysis for decisions makers. Traditionally, these models have been developed in Excel using VLOOKUPs, VBA (Macros), linked worksheets, Pivot Tables and Excel formulas. However, even experienced Excel users are finding it increasingly difficult to build efficient, maintainable solutions in the face of a rapid increase in data volumes, source systems, and management expectations. On the other hand, specialised reporting and analysis tools marketed as a replacement to Excel have not fulfilled their promise. Despite many alternative solutions, Excel is still the primary tool used by analysts and accountants in most business and government entities. Power BI does not attempt to replace Excel. It is part of Excel but with the specific intention of supporting those aspects of modelling and reporting with which traditional Excel techniques struggle to keep pace. Power BI can be used to automate the processing of massive data volumes, complex calculations, and exacting corporate layout and presentation requirements, both within the familiar Excel environment and/or the free Power BI Desktop tool. Introduction to Power BI Course Overview s Introduction to Power BI provides course attendees with the practical methods and skills they need to start using Power BI for modelling and report automation in Excel and Power BI Desktop, as soon as they walk out of the training room. This course can be presented using either Excel or Power BI Desktop. All skills learnt in this course are transferrable across both applications. Page 2

3 Course Duration 1 day Course Structure The course is structured as a number of interactive tasks. The attendees, with the assistance of the trainer, work through and complete each task on their computer. Concepts introduced in earlier tasks are revisited throughout the day, reinforcing the core learning outcomes. Course Requirements Attendees should be familiar with Excel and have some experience with data manipulation or reporting in Excel, particularly using Pivot Tables and VLOOKUPs. The course is compatible with Power BI Desktop, Excel 2010, 2013, 2016 and above. Office 365 subscribers will have the latest version of Excel. If using Excel 2010 or Excel 2013 attendees will need to install the Power Query and Power Pivot Add-Ins onto their machine prior to the course. Outcome for Attendees Attendees will learn: Why and when to use Power Query o How to extract data from a variety of sources include text files, Excel files, databases and web pages o How to cleanse semi-structured or inconsistent data o How to integrate data from different sources o How to create, maintain, parameterise, and run Power Query queries Why and when to use Power Pivot o How to build Power Pivot models o How to create DAX calculations to support modelling and report automation o How to create automated reporting using Power Pivot models Attendees will appreciate that Power Query can: Replace VLOOKUPs with merge and append functions Automate routine Excel data manipulation tasks Replace macros with Power Query queries Attendees will appreciate that Power Pivot can: Replace repeated Excel formulas Replace linked worksheets and large ranges of data and formulas Replace and exceed the capabilities of regular Pivot Tables Automate complex reporting requirements Page 3

4 Course Delivery Mode and Materials Delivery Mode The course is delivered in a hands-on workshop format, and normally presented to a group of between 3-6 attendees. We recommend up to 4 attendees but can support up to 6 attendees. The trainer introduces each task and objective and then the attendees work to complete the tasks on their computer. Delivery approach and engagement training courses are hands-on, interactive sessions between the trainer and the attendees. Attendees and the trainer work together through each task, building the Power BI models from the ground up. Attendees can reference the trainer s progress on the shared screen and are encouraged to ask questions and collaborate with colleagues. uses a number of real-world data sets to illustrate each task and learning outcome. The data sets include a diverse range of subject areas from banking and property to census and entertainment industry data. The small group size ensures that no attendee is left behind. Active participation in each exercise maintains a high level of engagement throughout the day. Materials and support Each course task has an associated set of support materials: 1. Extracting & loading data tasks Extract data and load into Power Query from a variety of different sources: Text files Excel workbooks, worksheets and tables Web pages Databases Loading the extracted data to Excel or Power Pivot Cleansing & Transforming Data with Power Query Cleansing & transforming data outcomes Learn how to prepare a clean data set by detecting and removing inconsistencies and augmenting the data with additional information required for reporting.
