2 INTRODUCTION Data Visualization s popular and effective tools present an effective story with the data, rather than paginated reports containing tables with statistics. There are great self-service BI products available in the market to build excellent dashboards. However, there are many cases where the organizations buy a tool, but they go unused, without the knowledge of its effective use. Success of any data visualization implementation, for grater adoption, depends on how well we do the following: Effective data preparation Data distribution and visualization strategy for effective story telling Minimalistic design with few, but, key metrics at overview level allowing users to slice and dice or drill down to lowest level details for comprehensive data discovery Performance and scalability We have observed many cases, wherein, clients end up with improper implementations that lead to a lot of performance issues. We would like to discuss the performance issues specific to Qlik implementations and solution by taking the case of a specific implementation. 3 THE CLIENT & THEIR NEED A U.S. based bank, which provides convenient access to checking and lending products for consumers and businesses. Their customer service and local knowledge gives them an edge in the industry and help achieve tremendous growth over the past years. A key part of their expansion strategy is gaining insights from customer data and profile. Due to this growth of data and existing design issues, their BI implementation that uses QlikView was struggling to keep up. The existing 3-tier architecture for the QlikView dashboards was taking close to 6-8 hours for full reload, delaying the availability of reports during business hours. Performance of Qlik dashboards was suffering too with users experience 20 second plus response times. Today, we demonstrated redesigned Qlik reports to the chairman and he loved it. Thanks a lot for the commitment and support shown throughout the project life cycle. 4 NOUS SOLUTION Maintaining the existing layered architecture, Nous implemented incremental load in extract layer. This approach made sure only new data was loaded daily. Further tuning of Qlik joins in the extract layer performed to achieve faster reload. Data model on the dashboard apps was not compliant with Qlik standards. Nous fine-tuned the data model, removed more than hundred fields that were unused in the presentation layer for optimal performance. TOOLS/ METHODOLOGIES USED Document analyzer used to identify design issues Qlik server log analysis conducted to analyze server performance Rigorous architecture and code review conducted to identify data model issues and bottlenecks QlikView scalability tool used to benchmark performance Current server architecture of a single QlikView server combined with the need for reloads during business hours meant that the machine's resources were being utilized for reloading rather than for user experience. QlikView server and publisher were installed on separate physical servers as opposed to the original single installation. BENEFITS Average response time reduced to under 3 seconds resulting in better user experience Lower reload time leading to quicker report availability Optimum usage of server hardware due to distributed installation of QlikView 4

5 CONCLUSION Standards based design of Qlik Dashboards would avoid majority of performance related issues. However, each implementation may have its own unique challenges in terms of large volumes of data, complex visualizations, collaboration and governance needs.
