Project Quality Management
Discussion Topics Quality Models Quality Management Activities ISO9000 CMMI
What Is a Project? A temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result A collection of activities and / or work items which are expected or planned to be completed in a pre-determined period of time Within an acceptable budget To fulfil a required scope (work content)
Project Characteristics All projects are to be executed within the constraints of the Iron Triangle, to achieve quality deliverables The Project Manager manages trade-offs between the various constraints
Project Characteristics (cont d) A well-defined objective Distinct activities for completion A project life cycle Specific duration for each activity, with total completion time and target dates A budget, with means of finance Assigned resources and responsibilities Well-defined organisation structure for management and communication
Project Management Activities Identifying requirements; Addressing the various needs, concerns, and expectations of the stakeholders in planning and executing the project; Setting up, maintaining, and carrying out communications among stakeholders that are active, effective, and collaborative in nature; Managing stakeholders towards meeting project requirements and creating project deliverables; Balancing the competing project constraints

Project Life Cycle Initiating Planning Executing Complete work defined in project management plan to satisfy project specifications Executing Monitoring and Controlling Closing
Project Life Cycle Executing Initiating Planning Monitoring and Controlling Closing Monitorng & Controlling Track, review, and orchestrate progress of project identify areas in which changes to plan required Initiate corresponding changes
Project Life Cycle Executing Initiating Planning Monitoring and Controlling Closing Conclude all activities across all Project Management Process Groups to formally complete the project, phase, or contractual obligations Closing
What Is Quality? Quality simply means that a product should meet its specification and meet the customers needs
McCall s Quality Model (1977) Product Revision ability to undergo changes Product Transition adaptability to new environments Product Operations operational characteristics
ISO 9126 Quality Model (2001)
Software Quality Management Concerned with ensuring that the required level of quality is achieved in a software product. Involves defining appropriate quality standards and procedures and ensuring that these are followed. Aims to develop a quality culture where quality is seen as everyone s responsibility.
Quality Management Activities Quality assurance Establish organisational procedures and standards for quality. Quality planning Select applicable procedures and standards for a particular project and modify these as required. Quality control Ensure that procedures and standards are followed by the software development team. Quality management should be separate from project management to ensure independence.
Quality of Process Affects Quality of Product Software development process D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 Quality management process Standards and procedures Quality plan Quality review reports

Quality Assurance and Standards Standards are the key to effective quality management. They may be international, national, organizational or project standards. Product standards define characteristics that all components should exhibit Process standards define how the software process should be enacted.
Importance of Standards Encapsulation of best practice- avoids repetition of past mistakes. They are a framework for quality assurance processes - they involve checking compliance to standards. They provide continuity - new staff can understand the organisation by understanding the standards that are used.
ISO 9000 An international set of standards for quality management. Applicable to a range of organisations from manufacturing to service industries. ISO 9001 applicable to organisations which design, develop and maintain products. ISO 9001 is a generic model of the quality process that must be instantiated for each organisation using the standard.
ISO 9000 Certification Quality standards and procedures should be documented in an organisational quality manual. An external body may certify that an organisation s quality manual conforms to ISO 9000 standards. Some customers require suppliers to be ISO 9000 certified although the need for flexibility here is increasingly recognised.
ISO 9000 Quality Management Principles Customer Focus Leadership Involvement of People Process Approach System Approach to Management Continual Improvement Factual Approach to Decision-Making Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships
Quality Planning A quality plan sets out the desired product qualities and how these are assessed and defines the most significant quality attributes. The quality plan should define the quality assessment process. It should set out which organisational standards should be applied and, where necessary, define new standards to be used.
Quality Plan Template Product introduction Description of product, intended market, quality expectations Product plans Critical release dates, distribution and product servicing plans Process descriptions Quality goals Critical product quality attributes Risks and risk management
