2 What is on the corporate sustainability agenda? 2
3 What is corporate sustainability? Sustainable development is "development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". The Brundtland Commission's report 1987 Corporate Sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments Robeco SAM Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to companies taking responsibility for their impact on society. The European Commission believes that CSR is important for the sustainability, competitiveness, and innovation of EU enterprises and the EU economy. EU strategy

10 Carbon bubble The carbon bubble hypothesis asserts that the valuation of the world s listed oil, gas and coal firms is artificially inflated because a material proportion of their proven reserves will need to be left in the ground in order to limit climate change to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, a temperature increase that is often regarded as the maximum that can be sustained without experiencing the most dangerous climate impacts. 10 Source: Carbon Tracker

12 Climate risk and investors The intense focus on climate change last years has prompted investors to look more closely at how the effects of global climate change might impact their portfolios GLOBAL INVESTOR STATEMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE We, the institutional investors that are signatories to this Statement, are acutely aware of the risks climate change presents to our investments. In addition, we recognise that significant capital will be needed to finance the transition to a low carbon economy and to enable society to adapt to the physical impacts of climate change. We are particularly concerned that gaps, weaknesses and delays in climate change and clean energy policies will increase the risks to our investments as a result of the physical impacts of climate change, and will increase the likelihood that more radical policy measures will be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In turn, this could jeopardise the investments and retirement savings of millions of citizens. This statement is signed by 409 investors representing more than US $24 trillion in assets. 12
13 Fossil fuel divestment Fossil fuel divestment is the practice of withdrawing investment (equity and debt) from companies involved in fossil fuel production, or from investment funds that hold fossil fuel companies. Spearheaded in 2014 by Norwegian Government Pension Fund, which divested companies that derive at least 30 of their business from coal, the movement has since grown to attract over 430 global institutions with USD 2.6trn in collective assets under management (AUM). This represents approximately 4% of total global AUM. 13 Source: Sustainalytics

19 What is a Science Based Target? Science Based Targets is a joint initiative by CDP, the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF. Targets are considered science-based if they are in line with the level of decarbonisation required to keep global temperature increase below 2 C compared to pre-industrial temperatures. According to data reported to CDP, 81% of the Global 500 companies already have GHG emission reduction or energy-specific targets. However, most of those targets do not equate to reductions required to meet the threat posed by climate change: they are either not ambitious enough to align with science, they don t cover a meaningful percentage of the companies emissions, or they are only short-term. Source: Science-based Target Setting Manual Dell commits to reduce GHG emissions from their facilities and logistics operations 50% by 2020, using a 2010 base-year. Dell also commits to reduce the energy intensity of their product portfolio 80% by 2020, using a 2011 baseyear. Pfizer commits to reduce GHG emissions from operations 20 percent by 2020 from a 2012 baseyear. This 2020 goal will keep the company on track to achieve a 60 to 80% reduction by 2050 from a 2000 base-year. Coca-Cola Enterprises commits to reduce absolute GHG emissions from their core business operations 50% by 2020, using a 2007 base-year. 19
