1 LIBRARIAN Department: Public Services/Support Services Class Code: 870 Revised Date: November 2009 FLSA Status: Exempt GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, responds to inquiries and provides reference and readers advisory services to customers; coordinates and delivers library programming; participates in community outreach activities; maintains and/or develops assigned collections; and performs other related duties as assigned. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Responds to public inquiries and provides information regarding the Library s operations, programs, and services. Provides customer assistance, reference, and/or readers advisory services to customers in person and by telephone and . Performs reference interviews and information searches for customers using online databases, print, and internet sources; assists customers in locating materials; places holds and requests interlibrary loans for customers. Instructs customers in the use of public computers, the internet, printers, copiers, catalogs, databases, and/or other Library equipment and resources. Develops, coordinates, and facilitates public classes and workshops; creates course materials. Participates in planning, creating, and maintaining book and/or other Library displays; designs posters and signage; monitors and updates bulletin boards. Plans, coordinates, promotes, implements, and/or delivers library programming including storytimes, craft activities, speakers and/or performance events. Interprets and explains Library policies and procedures; responds to and assists in resolving customer issues and complaints. Conducts a variety of collection maintenance and/or development functions; participates in organizing and maintaining assigned Library collection materials. Evaluates and identifies materials for cleaning, repair, and weeding; weeds materials in accordance with established schedules. Identifies collection gaps; recommends collection additions and/or requests replacement copies; may select and order new and replacement titles for specific collections or material types. Performs a variety of classification and cataloging functions; assigns and ensures the accuracy of classification numbers. Reviews and monitors bibliographic records for accuracy in coding and description; updates and edits bibliographic information as necessary. Locates and edits bibliographic records; inputs and edits cataloging files in the Library s database.

2 JOB DESCRIPTION Librarian[1].doc Creates and uploads new MARC records; edits and enhances incomplete MARC records to ensure compliance with Spokane Public Library standards. Conducts a variety of catalog maintenance duties; reclassifies materials; updates library material call numbers. Processes new documents; assigns locations and document/item numbers; inputs item information into the Library database; stamps and shelves materials. Updates and maintains the Library s databases, files, records, websites, and/or blogs. Coordinates and performs community outreach activities; delivers public presentations; promotes the Library s programs and services within the community; conducts tours of the Library. Oversees daily operations; provides guidance regarding departmental policies, procedures, and standards. Organizes work tasks and projects and delegates the work to clerical and/or paraprofessional employees; monitors the progress and quality of work performed; provides feedback to the manager regarding performance. May be in charge of a branch or department in the manager s absence. Provides assistance in training library personnel and/or updating work schedules as assigned. Chairs and/or serves on a variety of library committees as assigned or appointed. Performs other duties as assigned or required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Master s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science, Required Licenses or Certifications: Washington State Librarian Certification is required. Must possess a valid Driver s License. Required Knowledge of: Operations, programs, and services relative to public library operations. Public Services operations, policies, and procedures. Reference and readers advisory services. Collection maintenance and development principles. Basic principles of cataloging, classification and acquisition of library materials. Community outreach principles and activities. Library computer systems, databases, and software. Customer service standards and protocol. Required Skill in: Coordinating and performing a variety of professional librarian functions. Responding to inquiries and providing information regarding Library services, programs, and policies. Providing customer assistance and reference and/or readers advisory services to customers. Participating in maintaining and developing collections for area of assignment. Developing, coordinating, and delivering library programming. Conducting community outreach and promoting the Library s programs and services to the public. Maintaining the Library s databases, files, records, web pages, displays, and bulletin boards.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed in a public library environment and is subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing step stools/ladders, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds. Must be able to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry library materials and equipment.

4 Librarian (Cultural Programming Specialty addendum) Helps to position the Downtown library as a cultural anchor and community destination. Designs high impact cultural programming. Creates opportunities to showcase local talent. Identifies and applies for grants for programs, events, and exhibits. Partners with local organizations to bring dynamic cultural programing to the Downtown library. Activates Community Lens performance space. Plans and executes monthly large scale public events. Plans and executes quarterly community forums on current events. Coordinates and performs community outreach activities. Delivers public presentations and acts as the face of the library in the community. Promotes the Library s programs and services. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Master s or Bachelor s Degree in Library Science or other relevant field with experience providing direct services to the public; or a relevant combination of education and experience. Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid Driver s License. Required Knowledge of: Operations, programs, and services relative to public library operations. Community outreach principles and activities. Library computer systems, databases, and software. Customer service standards and protocol. Required Skill in: Independence, proactivity, calculated risk-taking, problem solving, and decisiveness.
