3 As networks are widely used and network bandwidth is improved, products that consumers can experience based on video, Virtual Reality (VR), big data, and the Internet of Everything (IoE) are becoming more and more diverse, and Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are facing the explosive growth of network traffic, reduction of profit margins, and impact of the new Over The Top (OTT) service. How to speed up the launch of new products and services to meet the growing expectations of consumers has become an important subject of CSPs. Transforming old networks based on massive dedicated devices into elastic cloud networks based on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is the best choice for all CSPs worldwide. NFV ADOPTION TIMEFRAME BY REGION % of Respondents 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% 50.0% 37.5% 12.5% 33.3% 50.0% 16.7% 20.0% 80.0% Within 2016 Within one to two years Within three to four years Transformation Americas EMEA APAC The 2016 telecom software media network (NFV/SDN) user survey report Trend recently released by Technology Business Research (TBR) shows that global telecom operators are constantly developing NFV. The telecom operators in America enjoy the fastest growth, benefiting from the largescale adoption of NFV in the USA. In the Asia-Pacific region, only 20% of telecom operators surveyed said they would adopt the NFV technology this year, while the rest 80% surveyed plan to adopt the NFV technology in the next year or two

4 Transformation Strategy Stage 1 no decoupling Solutions provided by different NFV providers in this stage are based on a silo mode. Hardware, Virtualized Infrastructure Management (), Virtual Network Function (), Virtual Network Function Manager (M), and Network Function Virtualization Orchestrator () are provided exclusively, resulting in the new vertical vendor lock-in scenario. The service innovation speed of CSPs depends on the overall system service efficiency of each provider. NFV Layered Decoupling Evolution The common Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware device is used in this stage to establish a unified and standardized hardware resource pool, which weakens CSPs' locking of hardware to a certain extent and accelerates service launch. Stage 2 L2 decoupling The virtualization infrastructure layer is further decoupled based on the For the layered decoupling evolution stages of CSP transformation to NFV technology, see the following figure. M M M HW HW HW No decoupling: silo M M M HW Layer-2 decoupling: software-hardware separation Stage 3 L3 decoupling unified and standardized COTS hardware resource pool in this stage. Different providers are no longer bound to their own virtualization management software but use standardized APIs for compatibility and adaption to build a unified virtualization infrastructure resource pool established in a unified way (At present, core virtualization technologies use the KVM of open source communities to virtualize the, and OpenStack APIs of open source communities are used as virtualization software management interfaces). In this stage, providers of different vendors will focus more on service innovation, so that CSPs can achieve more efficient service launch. This is the ultimate evolution goal of NFV. The unified management M M M M M M orchestration system is further achieved on the basis of L3 decoupling. CSPs have the ultimate control over in most cases. In this stage, the integration and O&M of NFV system solutions are the most difficult, Stage 4 full decoupling HW Full decoupling: unified orchestration HW Layer-3 decoupling separation of virtualization layer it is hard to locate faults among devices from multiple vendors, and the responsibility matrix is difficult to define, so the strategy of most CSPs in the world is to choose one NFV integrator (or pre-integrator) to be in charge of the integrated delivery of the entire NFV system

5 Benefits and difficulties in the above four different NFV decoupling stages are analyzed and compared in the following table. Decoupling Method Benefit Difficulty NFV Transformation Strategy No decoupling L2 decoupling L3 decoupling Low integration difficulty and short delivery period Common hardware and fast service innovation Common hardware and the virtualization layer, fast service innovation Vertical vendor lock-in, making service innovation difficult Difficult unified O&M Difficult unified O&M and difficult fault location The survey report recently released by Light Reading in 2016 shows that 53.33% of 120 CSPs are opt for NFV system integrators (or pre-integrators) for the integrated delivery of NFV solutions. Full decoupling Unified hardware, virtualization layer, orchestration layer, and focus on service innovation Difficult integration, complex O&M, and more difficult fault location WHAT'S THE BEST NFV STRATEGY FOR CSPS? NFV Transformation Challenge Service providers are torn over the safest way to deploy NFV in 2016, acoording to a recent survey by Light Reading, with the plurality saying that there is no safe way to completely de-risk the process. As an advanced and disruptive technology, NFV allows the network architecture of CSPs to be more open and service deployment to be more flexible, but NFV has to face many challenges in the current development stage. wait until 2017 there is no safe way to do it this year 26.67% 20.00% Use their own teams to integrate NFV solutions from multiple best-of-breed vendors Immature standards Many standards organizations and open source projects More difficult unified O&M and management Frequent service deployment update Difficult data and storage performance Source: Light Reading, January 2016 survey of 120 CSPs 14.17% Pay a systems integrator to integrate NFV products from multiple vendors Incomplete ecosystem optimization Complex multi-vendor integration Unclear fault analysis and location Reduced system security Difficult assurance of carrier-grade reliability Purchase a pre-integrated/certified NFV solution from one vendor ecosystem 18.33% 20.83% Purchase a pre-integrated/certified NFV solution from one vendor 06 07
