1 WIPRO LIMITED Company Background Wipro Limited was established in 1945 in Bangalore, India, as Western India Vegetables Products Limited.The company started its operations with the manufacturing of hydrogenated vegetable oil. Over the years, it expanded and diversified its operations into various business areas, such as IT products and services, consumer care, lighting products, medical services, infrastructure engineering services, etc.wipro Limited has five major business segments - Wipro Technologies,Wipro Infotech,Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, Wipro Infrastructure Engineering, and Wipro GE Medical Systems Limited. It is the only Indian IT company to win ASTD Best Awards for three consecutive years. Overview In 1992,Wipro established its US headquarters in Mountain View, California. Currently, the company has nearly 1,000 employees working in California. It has established several subsidiaries in the US, such as Wipro Inc. and Enthink Inc. and has grown steadily by acquiring US-based companies. As can be seen in the figure below,wipro generates nearly half of its total revenues from its US operations. Companies Acquired by Wipro Limited in the USA NerveWire Inc. In 2003,Wipro acquired NerveWire Inc., based in Newton, Massachusetts. It provides management consulting and systems integration solutions to various industry segments, which include security services, banking, private client, trading and investment management, insurance, and high-tech industries.this acquisition has helped Wipro in developing domain expertise and establishing over 40 new client relationships and more than 20 active engagements. 128 mpower Software Services Inc. In December 2005,Wipro Inc. acquired mpower Software Services, headquartered at Princeton, New Jersey. It provides global software and consulting solutions, such as application management, testing, systems integration, product

3 development, systems maintenance and technical support solutions.with this acquisition,wipro expects to reinforce its technical expertise and expand its operations into the financial solutions business and payment industry. Further,Wipro acquired MPACT Technology Services Private Limited (MPACT), a joint venture (JV) between mpower and MasterCard International. cmango Inc. In April 2006,Wipro Inc. acquired cmango Inc., headquartered in California, USA, with a view to expanding in the area of business management. cmango has several offices in the US and is also present in the UK, Singapore and India. It provides Business Service Management (BSM) Solutions, which help companies in managing their IT infrastructure, increasing their revenues and lowering their service costs and business risks. cmango generates annual revenues worth US$ 13 million. Quantech Global Services In May 2006,Wipro acquired US-based Quantech Global Services, a provider of computer aided design and engineering services, designed especially for the automotive, aerospace and consumer goods industries. Some of Quantech's major clients include General Motors, EDS, Honda,Toyota, Daimler Chrysler, Johnson Controls, Ford Motor Company, Mazda and Visteon. In 2005, it generated revenues worth US$ 12.7 million. Quantech's design services complement Wipro's embedded software and system design services to provide complete product engineering services to customers. Success Factors Strategic Acquisitions Wipro Ltd. acquired four US-based companies, NerveWire, mpower Software Solutions, cmango and Quantech Global Services, which later became part of Wipro Technologies.These acquisitions were instrumental in Wipro's success, as they helped the company in enhancing its domain expertise and technical knowledge, adding new service lines, expanding its client base and strengthening its presence in existing and new geographic locations. 129

4 Strategic Partnerships Wipro has entered into a partnership with Health Sciences Institute to launch an integrated delivery platform for Pay-for-Performance Programs and Health Plans in the US.These programmes have provided efficient management systems and frameworks for individual physicians as well as large organisations, such as the Institute of Medicine, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the MacColl Institute for Healthcare Innovation, etc. Wipro has also forged an alliance with Unisys Corporation, headquartered in the US, for providing integrated delivery of managed services to its customers. Under this alliance, Unisys would act as a subcontractor to Wipro in providing managed services to its US-based clients. Wipro has also tied up with Mark Logic, headquartered in the US, to provide customer solutions in the media and publishing industry.this has helped Wipro to build domain expertise, add new service lines and enhance its customer base. Focus on Technology Wipro provides a wide range of high-end IT services which include IT consulting services, system integration services, technology infrastructure services, package implementation services, and R&D services. Further,Wipro has focused on identifying emerging growth areas such as technology infrastructure outsourcing and has developed centers of excellence in these areas.
