Haynes International Building a Global ERP System for the Metals Industry Founded in 1912, Haynes International Inc. ( is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of high-performance nickel- and cobalt-based alloys used in corrosion and high-temperature applications. Haynes employs more than 1,000 employees in service centers and offices throughout Europe, Asia, and the U.S. After two decades of acquisitions and expansion, Haynes disparate, outdated systems were not keeping pace. Like many global metals manufacturers, multiple systems and numerous challenges stood in the way of a comprehensive view of operations. Globally, it took great effort for Haynes to update purchase orders and inventory requests, consolidate transactions, and convert currencies. Manual entry increased the risk of data misinterpretation, miscalculations, and undetected errors. Maintaining global supply chain data became challenging. To provide the information its executive management team demanded, Haynes needed a single global enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. crowehorwath.com/metals 3

Taking Steps Toward a Global Solution When Haynes started to search for a new ERP system, the company relied on established relationships with strategic resources. It engaged Crowe Horwath LLP to initiate the implementation and help optimize the required investments in infrastructure, process, and people. I knew that Crowe was working with Microsoft 1, and the Dynamics AX ERP system offered the robust international currency and consolidation capabilities we needed to pursue our globalization strategy, says Jeff Young, vice president and chief information officer. Haynes thought the Microsoft Dynamics AX architecture provided a core foundation to which the Crowe Metals Accelerator could be added to meet metals-specific ERP requirements. The metals industry and technology solution expertise that Crowe shared was critical to the implementation. Crowe is very well-positioned to work with users, says Young. They are well-trained and can help make sure the end result is a successful solution. One of the requirements in Haynes ERP selection process was access to international currency options. Microsoft Dynamics AX offered the functionality to unify Haynes enterprise and support requirements for multiple currencies, languages, and regulations. 4

Haynes International Building a Global ERP System for the Metals Industry Three Layers to Support Success Haynes global implementation was based on three important components: 1. Microsoft Dynamics AX A New Generation of ERP 2. Crowe Metals Accelerator An Industry-Tailored Solution 3. Crowe The Microsoft Industry Partner for Metals I knew that Crowe was working with Microsoft, and the Dynamics AX ERP system offered the robust international currency and consolidation capabilities we needed to pursue our globalization strategy. -Jeff Young Vice President, Chief Information Officer Haynes International Inc. crowehorwath.com/metals 5

Systematically Planning for Change Haynes began by deploying the Microsoft Dynamics AX platform in three European subsidiaries each with its own languages, data sets, and processes. Plant maintenance, purchasing, and the general ledger came online next, followed by sales, several U.S. locations, and Asian subsidiaries. During the implementation, Crowe worked with Haynes corporate and local offices to ease the transition. Creating and adapting to one standard supported by one system was a major change for the company. The key (to the successful project) was choosing a resource to go the extra mile in supporting users, says Young. Crowe brings a constant level of new talent and very educated personnel that have the ability to listen to our users and our needs, to understand the product, and to create a solution that will allow us to be successful for the next years. -Jeff Young Vice President, Chief Information Officer Haynes International Inc. 6

Haynes International Building a Global ERP System for the Metals Industry Benefiting From a Single Global Solution Haynes is already realizing positive results, and it anticipates that benefits will continue to accrue as departments and locations are added to the system. Now an order made at any location is entered and updated in real time with enterprise visibility. And management teams can access global data and reports at any time. Intercompany capabilities have streamlined cross-company purchase orders, eliminating a manual process that required reentry of data as it passed between disconnected systems. The improved visibility to inventory throughout facilities supports global supply chain efficiency and delivery date accuracy. In addition, local sites now take advantage of advanced planning, production reporting, and cost tracking capabilities. The new system also simplifies consolidation of global financials and reinforces requirements for international financial reporting standards and multicurrency considerations. The ability to globally roll up and report on data provides management with more timely information on costs and performance. Haynes also expects to reduce the burden on IT support staff and gain efficiencies as a result of replacing local systems with a single global solution. crowehorwath.com/metals 9
