Sequence management This demo script shows how to set up and run batch order sequencing in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. Target audience Pre-sales consultants will find this demo script useful. Demo scenario Contoso manufactures paint in three colors: white, red, and black. Each color is put into packages of two sizes: onegallon cans and one-quart cans. The first demo in this document takes you through a scenario where Tony, the production manager, verifies the setup of the sequencing for the paint products. The second demo takes you through a scenario where Eduardo, the production planner, runs master planning for the paint products. In this master planning run, sequencing is integrated into the planning calculation. the planning calculation. Demo step-by-step Demo 1: Sequencing setup Scenario and background Tony, the production manager, is setting up the sequencing for the paint products. The paint is manufactured in different colors and put in cans of two sizes. The general rule for sequencing is that batch orders for lighter colors should be run before batch orders for darker colors. A second rule is that orders for larger cans (one-gallon cans) should be filled before orders for smaller cans (one-quart cans). 1 Sign in as Tony (in this scenario, sign in as the administrator). 2 Make sure that you re signed in to the PICH company. Note: You can switch companies by using the field at the top of the page. 3 Go to Product information management > Products > Released products. Sequence management 3

4 On the Released product details page, use the filter field to search for item number P3. Note: All the paint products are shown in the grid. Notice that the production type of all these products is set to Formula. 5 Go to Master planning > Setup > Sequencing > Sequences. On the Sequence page, you will first define a sequence for three colors (white, red, and black). 6 Select New. 7 In the Sequence ID field, enter a name for the sequence, such as Color. In the Description field, enter a description. 8 In the Sequence value section, add each color by selecting Add, and then entering the name of the color in the Value field and its ranking in the Rank field. 9 Select Save. Next, you will define a sequence for two package sizes (gallon and quart). 10 Select New. 11 In the Sequence ID field, enter a name for the sequence, such as Package. In the Description field, enter a description. Sequence management 4

12 In the Sequence value section, add each package size by selecting Add, and then entering the name of the package size in the Value field and its ranking in the Rank field. 13 Select Save. 14 Go to Master planning > Setup > Sequencing > Sequence group. On the Sequence group page, you will define a sequence group that contains the Color and Package sequences that you just created. 15 Select New. 16 In the Sequence group ID field, enter a name for the sequence group, such as Color-Package. In the Description field, enter a description. 17 In the Sequences section, select Add, and then enter Color in the Sequence ID field, and 0 in the Rank field. 18 Select Add, and then enter Package in the Sequence ID field and 1 in the Rank field. Note: In this sequence group, the Color sequence has priority, and the Package sequence has second priority. This sequence group will be associated with the resource where planning of the batch orders will occur. 19 Select Save. 20 Go to Master planning > Setup > Sequencing > Sequence value. Sequence management 5

On the Sequence item page, you will create the table that has the colors and package sizes of all the paints. 21 Select New to add line for products. Complete each line according to the color and package size until the table resembles the table in the following illustration. Note: On this page, you set up the mapping between the sequence IDs (Color and Package) and the products. As you can see in the illustration, product P3000 is white paint in a one-quart can, and P3001 is white paint in a one-gallon can. 22 Go to Production control > Operations > All routes. 23 On the All routes page, select route number (Paints, Cans) to open the Routes form. Note: All the paint products are associated with the same formula version, , and there is one operation for them, LiqFilling. 24 Go to Route > Maintain > Route details. Sequence management 6

25 On the Route details page, select the Resource requirements tab. Note: All the paint products are set up to be manufactured and planned on resources in resource group 21. The Filling capability is used. 26 Go to Organization administration > Resources > Resource groups. 27 On the Resource groups page, select resource group Select Edit. 29 On the Operation FastTab, in the Sequence group ID field, select Color-Package.Color-Package. 30 Select Save. 31 Go to Master planning > Setup > Plans > Master plans. 32 On the Master plans page, on the Sequencing FastTab, verify that the Sequence planned orders after master planning option is set to Yes. Sequence management 7

33 On the Time fences in days FastTab, verify that the Sequencing time fence is set to 100 days.. Note: The sequencing is set up to do sequencing in bucket periods of 28 days. Demo 2: Sequencing execution Scenario and background Eduardo, the production planner, is running master scheduling in Contoso. He looks at the planning result of planned batch orders for paint products. Based on the planning result, he wants to sequence the planned orders for the paint products according to the priority of the various colors and package sizes. He knows that the master scheduling run is set up to do sequencing of planned batch orders. Therefore, he verifies the sequencing result. Sequence management 8

1 Enter master planning in the search field at the top of the page to open the Master planning workspace. 2 On the Master planning tile on the left side of the workspace, select Run. 3 In the Master planning dialog box, select OK. 4 Select the Planned orders tile on the left side of the Master planning workspace, or go to Master planning > Master planning > Planned orders. On the Planned orders page, you will filter on paint products by using the filter field above the grid, where Item number is selected. 5 In the filter field, enter P3. The grid is filtered so that item numbers P3000, P3001, P3002, P3004, and P3005 are shown. Note: You will see that the planned orders aren t sequenced according to priority (color and package size) but according to delivery date. Sequence management 9

6 Select the Sequenced planned orders link on the right side of the Master planning workspace, or go to Master planning > Master planning > Sequenced planned orders. Note: On the Sequenced planned orders page, you will see that the planned orders are sequenced according to color and package size in bucket periods of 28 days. These periods are defined by the value of the Campaign field. The Sequenced planned orders page acts like the regular Planned orders page, and the production planner can firm the planned orders from here. The regular planned orders are planned by the master scheduling calculation according to demand and material availability. The delivery dates of the sequenced planned orders are offset both backwards and forwards in the defined bucket periods, based on the sequencing criteria. Therefore, if the planner uses the delivery dates of the sequenced planned orders, there is a risk that there won t be available material for the batch orders, or that the batch orders won t meet the requested fulfillment dates. Depending on the planning result, the planner can firm the planned orders from either the regular Planned orders page or the Sequenced planned orders page. If the regular Planned orders page is used, the sequencing criteria are disregarded. If the Sequenced planned orders page is used, the sequencing criteria are considered. Sequence management 10
