7 Researchers use of micro data at Statistics Denmark 1986: Statistics Denmark starts on-site access for researchers : possible to send programmes to Statistics Denmark and have the output sent back 2000: Statistics Denmark starts ON-LINE access for researchers: Direct access to data at Statistics Denmark from own computers 2002: Ministry of Science starts supporting researchers use of data at Statistics Denmark 7

8 The on-line access to data in very few words Research institutiones and their researchers are approved to get access to micro data Relevant de-identified data are placed at special dedicated research-servers at Statistics Denmark safely behind our firewalls Researchers get access to their relevant de-identified data through a safe internet-connetion All their analyses have to be made on the dedicated servers at Statistics Denmark Results from these analyses may be send back to the researchers by , but only if the results do not violate our rules of conficentiality. 8

13 The Organization of Research Services All contact with researchers and all data for research are handled by one specialized Research Service Unit Today we have a staff of 20 emploees 16 academics (generalists) 3 IT-specialists 1 secretary 13

14 The Mission of Research Services Research Services exist for the purpose of: Making micro data available for our customers individual needs in order to enable them to obtain knowledge that is not accessible from the general statistical program Providing advice and service to our customers in a helpful and competent manner with regard to their use of micro data 14

16 The main tasks of Research Services Give advise to researchers new and old projects Deliver data to all research projects Manage the remote access arrangements and administrate authorizations, contracts etc. Coordinate data from all divisions in Statistics Denmark Provide and maintain an effective IT-system that enables researchers to analyse relevant data (IT-center) Knowledge sharing Do computer related work & update research databases 16

17 The main skills in Research Services Our 16 Academics are generalist, they are responsible for a large number of projects and follows each project from start to finish Main technical skills: SAS and Exel etc. Main personal skills: Customer oriented with profound knowledge about research Good at coorperation and knowledge sharing Flexible and able to multitask Systematic Responsible 17
