1 Perspective: IDC Health Insights' Top Preferred Life Science Technology Vendors for 2013 PERSPECTIVE Eric Newmark # HI Global Headquarters: 5 Speen Street Framingham, MA USA P F IN THIS PERSPECTIVE This IDC Health Insights Perspective discusses results from the 1Q13 Leading Indicators in Life Science IT Spending Survey, which polled 102 industry leaders on which life science vendors they plan to spend money with during Background IDC Health Insights recently completed its 1Q13 Leading Indicators in Life Science IT Spending Survey, a biannual IT budget tracking survey of several hundred life science companies. The survey, which received responses from 102 industry leaders on planned IT budgetary spend, technology priorities, and vendor preferences, asked participants to identify which vendors servicing the life science market they expect to spend money with on software, hardware, and IT services during Each year, the line of inclusion is drawn at the logical breaking point where numbers drop off most significantly. For hardware and software, this now includes all vendors scoring over 10%, and for IT services, all vendors receiving a score over 2% were included. Below these thresholds, the remaining vendor scores drop off more significantly. Survey Results Hardware Dell maintained its sizable lead in the hardware category, with 55% of life science companies expecting to purchase hardware from Dell over the next 12 months. Dell has held the top spot in this survey for over six years. While most of the companies on this list have been similarly ranked in prior years, the most notable improvement in hardware came from IBM, moving into third place for the first time in four years, with 39% of respondents planning to purchase their hardware from IBM. This represents nearly a 400% increase in IBM's survey score over last year. Apple, which also moved up one spot each year since it ranked in fifth place during 2009 (fourth in 2010, third in 2011, and second in February 2013, IDC Health Insights #HI IDC Health Insights: Life Science Business Systems Strategy: Perspective

2 2012), continued to improve its score by nearly 50%, jumping from 30% last year to 44% for This continues to further validate our prior findings that the ipad is helping Apple become a dominant player in the life sciences, as outlined in Perspective: Apple Quickly and Quietly Becoming a Major Player in Pharma Sales and Marketing Technology (IDC Health Insights #HI227972, April 2011). Cisco, Intel, EMC, Sun, and Siemens round out the rest of the list of vendors receiving significant mentions in this preferred vendor survey. Software Oracle led all software vendors as the most likely choice for life science software purchases during 2013, with 33% (up from 26.1% last year) of life science companies planning to spend money with Oracle. Interestingly, while Apple made huge strides in the software category last year, it has slid back to seventh place this year from second place in This is likely attributed to more enterprise software now being developed specifically for the ipad by many other companies. SAP and Symantec both experienced nice improvements, with SAP's score rising 22% and Symantec's nearly 100%. With mobility becoming an increasingly central piece of corporate strategy across the life science industry, data security is now squarely in the spotlight, which is likely helping drive renewed momentum for Symantec. IT Services Accenture once again secured the number 1 spot for the third year in a row, with 14% (up from 9.6% last year) of life science companies planning to use Accenture's services in IBM maintained its second place ranking, with 11% (up from 8.7% last year), and Cognizant held the third spot for the third year running, with 7% of the industry planning to utilize Cognizant's IT services in Capgemini placed fourth, with 3.5%, followed by TCS, IMS Health, Infosys, and HCL all tying for fifth place, each with 3% of survey responses. This is the first time that TCS has been recognized on IDC Health Insights' preferred vendors list for the life sciences, and it is the third straight year that IMS has placed in the top 5. Overall, most IT services numbers seemed to be up slightly relative to last year's numbers (see Table 1). For comparative purposes, rankings from the two previous years are shown in Tables 2 and 3.
