WHAT IS CAUSING COMPANIES TO DEPLOY OR UPGRADE SHAREPOINT RIGHT NOW? YOU MAY HAVE: Aging hardware Running out of storage/resources on-premises Unsupported software Company Mergers Everyone needs to work on the same platform Mobile use demands New features! Bells and whistles Own the upgraded licensing already

WHAT IS CAUSING COMPANIES TO DEPLOY OR UPGRADE SHAREPOINT RIGHT NOW? New Features 10 GB single file upload limit (up from 2GB) Zero downtime patching Custom external sharing options 10k list view item threshold (up from 5k) Improved integration with Office Mobile Apps Data loss prevention

No matter what your situation, it brings us all to the same place with the same questions Can I do what I need to do in the cloud? What are the pros and cons? Is the cloud secure? Who else in my industry is doing this?

OPTION 1: STAY 100% ON-PREMISES 1 PROS Controlled updates apply them when you want New min role (with redundant architecture) allows zero downtime patching Smaller patches means less downtime Easy migration/upgrade Connecting to Line of Business systems is easy It s been around for a while SharePoint 2016 is not the last version of on-premises!!

OPTION 1: STAY 100% ON-PREMISES CONS 1 No new features without Software Assurance based feature packs AND 100% of the cloud features won t be deployed Features list for on-premises updates seen in the FoS keynote are not yet released Potential performance issues (remote users) SharePoint Server maintenance zero downtime patching requires redundant roles. That s 11 servers!!! Plus SQL

OPTION 1B: STAY 100% ON-PREMISES SharePoint Fully documented, tested, and deployed in many organizations You re not looking at cloud integration yet Critical third party tools not yet available Foundation (free) is still an option

OPTION 2: GO 100% SHAREPOINT ONLINE 2 PROS All new features, all the time Mobile Apps No server maintenance Very little downtime Redundancy/HA are built in Unlimited space for each user in OneDrive for Business Security encryption in motion and at rest, DLP Roadmap

OPTION 2: GO 100% SHAREPOINT ONLINE 2 CONS Constant Updates Migration requires a third party tool You may need to look at increasing bandwidth needs There is NO calculator for this Difficult to connect to on-premises systems/no direct access to SharePoint server for custom development Critical third party tool not supported in SharePoint Online

OPTION 3: BEST OF BOTH WORLDS 3 Bring the Cloud to Your Business SharePoint Hybrid Options

Straight from Microsoft:

Basic integration Hybrid OneDrive and Hybrid Sites Wizards, Hybrid App Launcher Easy to configure, big wins Bridges the gaps without a full commitment Phased approached easier to support 2013 users need to keep up to date on CUs

THE EXECUTIVE INTEGRATE ON-PREMISES WITH YAMMER Display Yammer feeds embedded in on onpremises SharePoint site The newsfeeds are rumored to be deprecated as the integration with Yammer continues to improve Replace boring discussion boards with mobile accessible conversations!

Complex integration Hybrid Team Sites, Search Governance and planning required Hybrid Search Difficult to configure in 2013, Wizard driven in 2016 E5 required for detailed Delve analytics

OPTION 4: COMPLEX HYBRID SCENARIOS 3 4 PROS: Inbound Search on-premises, results from online Outbound Search online from on-premises Both Search results now combined Search extranet from the intranet Streamlined and seamless results improved from 2013 to 2016 Delve now uses hybrid search Complicated setup is now wizard based

OPTION 4: COMPLEX HYBRID SCENARIOS 3 4 CONS Complexity!! 2013: Difficult to configure Cloud based index for ALL content Updates for 2016 require Software Assurance Directory Sync required ADFS NOT Required unless you use Web Application Proxy or need SSO

OPTION 4: COMPLEX HYBRID SCENARIOS 3 4 Profile Redirection SharePoint recognizes hybrid users held in 365 vs on-premises only Coming Soon Hybrid taxonomy On-prem audit logs to analytics in the cloud (Delve?)

SharePoint Hybrid can be AWESOME Understand your options Review requirements Carefully plan timeframes Allow time for testing

What if it could be even BETTER? How can I publish content from my intranet to my extranet? Is there an easier way to connect to my data? Can I create workflows for both environments?

Bridge the gap! No Cost Solutions Microsoft Flow Microsoft Power Apps Cool Free stuff StratusForms.com #SayNotoInfoPath

Bridge the gap! Third party tools Forms and Workflow No code solutions for Forms, Workflow, Reports 365 Ready LOB Integrations Connect to on-premises business systems like SQL, SharePoint, Exchange - no code!

Recap SharePoint On-Premises is ideal when You want to have full control of your environment Line of business connections are critical You ve invested a lot in custom development Stick with SharePoint 2013 when.. External Users, Hybrid, and Mobile use are not priorities You have a third party tool that doesn t support SharePoint Online or SharePoint 2016

Recap SharePoint Online is ideal when You don t want to manage servers Frequent updates are acceptable Mobile use is important You need additional storage space

Recap SharePoint Hybrid is ideal when You want the best of both worlds! You are still comfortable supporting servers onpremises You want to integrate OneDrive for Business or other 365 apps You have search needs that spread multiple environments

Recap SharePoint Third Party tools are ideal when You want to make development and automation easier You want to bridge the gap in your hybrid environment You need to connect multiple data systems to each other

Last but not least.
