Why is cloud computing relevant for teaching? Traditional High deployment costs to deliver software Reduced installation, administration time and costs Control and governance chaos in software processes Better governance through standardized delivery of services Preconfigured software embodying best practices to expedite teaching Required assistance from IT teams reduces time to software delivery and teaching Tools can be provisioned in minutes. No download, installation or setup. Self-service portal to access to software resources 9

The IBM Academic Skills Cloud Academic Skills Cloud IBM has announced an Academic Skills Cloud project to dynamically deliver provisioned virtual server images of some of it s leading software for use by College/University Faculty to more easily teach IT related skills, via cloud computing services. The goal is to expedite the service delivery of software used to teach IT skills at colleges/universities through a highly automated, highly virtualized, very dynamic, and flexible self service cloud environment. Value IBM Academic Cloud, delivers a broad portfolio of easy to consume, real time provisioning and enterprise software services Reduces the necessity of faculty to conduct traditional and time consuming software download, installation, deployment and configuration routines to leverage our software for teaching purposes. Faster deployment of IBM tools for use in classes. Increases faculty time focusing on teaching content, less time on logistics, and administration. Provides faculty and students in classes preconfigured virtual software images embodying best practices. 11

Getting Started with IBM Academic Skills Cloud: 17

Getting Started with IBM Academic Skills Cloud: Add Instance Four Steps 18

Getting Started with IBM Academic Skills Cloud: Select Image 19

Getting Started with IBM Academic Skills Cloud: Creating Instance Your Control Panel will update within minutes. Requesting the IP address, the software components, operating system Provisioning creating the virtual machine 20 Active available for access

Getting Started with your Cognos 10 Server on the IBM Cloud Connect to Your Instance You can access your new IBM Cognos BI Server instance here. If anonymous access was enabled, then no logon is required. Otherwise, use the Business analytics administrator username baadmin with the password you selected when you created the instance. Image Details This image contains the following products: IBM Cognos Business Intelligence 10.1 Server with sample data IBM WebSphere Application Server IBM HTTP Server v7.0 Fix Pack 11 IBM DB2 v9.7 Workgroup Server Edition (Limited Use) IBM Cognos BI Sample Data Sets Running on Red Hat Linux Server 21

Getting Started with your Cognos 10 Server on the IBM Cloud To access the Cognos 10 BI Server on the IBM Academic Skills Cloud, simply specify the following URL in your web browser: Name>/ibm/cognos ** including your hostname from your image** The Welcome Page for Cognos 10 BI Server should then appear! Sample Data sets Click on the My Home link in the Welcome Page above to enter the Public Folders content page. Click on the Samples folder shown below to run (and edit) the various sample reports, queries and analysis based on sample relational data sources and IBM Cognos Power Cubes. 22

Various Approaches on Instances Faculty Faculty Created and Managed Student Created and Managed Students 24

Various Approaches on Instances Faculty Faculty Created and Managed Professors sign SmartCloud user agreement / addendum to IBM Academic Initiative agreement Professors get an account on SmartCloud (Academic Skills Cloud) Professors create instances using their cloud key, can create multiple keys Professors provide instance / product access instructions to students - i.e. web urls for Cognos, RTC, Mashup Center, Websphere Portal etc Pros: - Central Management / Governance by Faculty - Faculty can save instances as private images, delete instances at end of semester - Shields students from SmartCloud Control Panel, key management and Putty/SSH interfaces Cons: - Required to gain familiarity with SmartCloud Control Panel, Key Management etc - Requires up front planning, and post semester decommissioning of instances - Depending on IBM product / image being used, faculty may need to also gain familiarity with SSH / Putty client 25

Various Approaches on Instances Students Student Created and Managed Professors sign SmartCloud user agreement / addendum to IBM Academic Initiative agreement Professors get an account on SmartCloud (Academic Skills Cloud) Professor provide names and addresses of students to IBM IBM adds students to Professor s SmartCloud account Student creates cloud key, and creates instances) Pros: - Faculty defer cloud instance creation and management to students - Students enabled to create instances on own, and are exposed to cloud concepts - Faculty can save instances as private images, delete instances at end of semester - Shields students from SmartCloud Control Panel, key management and Putty/SSH interfaces Cons: - Students require familiarity with SmartCloud Control Panel, Key Management, and IBM product capabilities etc - Students manage their instances, including deletion of instances at end of semester - Requires up front planning, and post semester decommissioning of instances - Depending on IBM product / image being used, student may need to also gain familiarity with SSH / Putty client 26

Various Roles Administrator Has IBM SmartCloud account Creates SmartCloud key Enabled to create instances with SmartCloud key Manages instances via SmartCloud Control Panel Can Create Private Images, Delete Instances Typically performed by Professor or Teacher Assistant User Simply accesses the capabilities of the IBM product / instance Will not use SmartCloud portal interface; control panel* Will not create or need to use cloud key* *Advanced User scenario can exist, when a student project may require exposure to key control panel features, or ability to create instances, and manage instances 27

Recommended Approach for Pace University Faculty Managed Instances Creates instances Leverage IBM SmartCloud Control Panel Professor Provides Web URL for Students with exercises / assignments Benefits: Centralizes management of teaching instances Students simply access IBM Cognos via browser 28
