23 SAFETY STUDIES & SAFETY TRAINING is able to participate in or manage a HAZOP/HAZAN study whether it is for a complete facility or part of the facility, using experienced engineering personnel to form the team. HAZOP Hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies are defined as a formal systematic analysis to examine the process design, engineering and operational intent of a process facility to assess the potential hazards associated with the maloperation or incorrect functioning of individual pieces of the process plant and the consequences of this incorrect functioning on the plant as a whole. Having identified this hazard, the effect can be further analysed to quantify the risk to the plant (HAZAN). HAZOP/HAZAN studies can be undertaken at any point in the plant s life. Usually this would be carried out during the design stages. Studies can be carried out on existing facilities where no initial HAZOP/HAZAN was undertaken. A study is strongly recommended to assess the effects of a modification to an existing plant to ensure that the modification in no way interferes with the original design integrity of the plant.
