Everyday New Challenges in IP Protection Your corporations intellectual property is what makes your products competitive and compelling Many industries are subject to IP safeguard standards that can result in huge fines and imprisonment A single violation could ruin your reputation with existing and prospective customers New technologies making information sharing easier are creating opportunities for violations Page 7

How do people exchange data today? - Typically the path of least resistance PROSTEP AG Page 8

Failures with the path of least resistance Page 9

& FTP Really? How old are your trusted protocols? Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail ( ) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks. SMTP was first defined by RFC 821 in 1982 and grew out of standards developed during the 1970s. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another host over a TCP-based network, such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server typically with clear text authentication and published as RFC 114 in 1971 Paraphrased from < Page 10

Cloud Services? Dropbox? Can you trust your data to reside outside your network? Do the providers obtain rights to the data? Do they have effective security policies and governance in place? Is the transmission and exchange of data secure? How do you log and audit the data exchange? Are you in control of recipient accounts? PROSTEP AG Page 11

Why do we keep doing it? increasing convenience almost always reduces security CONVENIENCE! Page 12

Requirements : Send only the engineering data that fulfils the intended purpose You don t have to give away the corporate jewels Systematic and Automatic processes can transform you data prior to data exchange to allow only the minimal information required for the recipient to do their job. Data can be dumbed down with history, features and other IP related elements removed. Each recipient can have a data profile that determines what they can receive Neutral formats can be created, on the fly NX JT STEP 3DPDF Etc Page 19

Final Advice From the Field Start Today Use Free Trials to get a feeling for what does and does not work for your enterprise Look for a mix of Hosted or Self Installed Options Look for technology that integrates not only front end applications (Outlook, Desktop, Mobile) but back end applications like PLM, ERP, Etc Low Hanging Fruit to go after for DX Security Outlook Desktop Web Based Don t forget about protecting your data once it leaves your enterprise. Getting it there is only part of the equation. Strip unneeded IP Consider DRM solutions for when your data is in the wild. Page 32
