E-Business Suite System down during patching

Downtime is a big problem Production Outage Major Release Maintenance Rollups (RUPs) Critical Patch Updates (CPUs) Legislative and Regulatory updates When outages interfere with core business activity Reluctance to upgrade to take advantage of new feature Barrier to staying current with recommended patches Global Single Instance Compounds the problem Patching any one module causes the entire system to be down

Wouldn t be nice if Critical business operations were not interrupted by maintenance operations Revenue generating activities were to stay online Web Orders Booking Orders Service Requests Business users were to stay online Pay Suppliers Pay Employees Uninterrupted manufacturing operations Downtime required by any patch was predictable Measured in minutes not days or hours Global Singles Instances remained operational 24*7 Maintenance window easier to allocate as shorter time required

E-Business Suite R12.2 Online Patching In 12.2 all patching operations are online E-Business Suite will remain available to users during patching operations

E-Business Suite R12.2 Online Patching Downtime will be measured in minutes or seconds not in hours or days Downtime window will be predictable Patches are applied while the production application remains online

Changing the paradigm of patching as we know it Downtime Patches Assume no other activity on the system Wall clock time very important Designed to consume maximum resources Data upgrades designed to run as fast as possible Online Patches Users will remain online Wall clock time is no longer an overriding concern Designed to share resources with online users Data upgrades designed to not affect the running application

The basics of Online Patching

EBS R12.2 Patching Cycle

EBS R12.2 Patching Cycle During cutover a brief downtime is taken Patching cycle can pause at this stage for as long as required Waiting for an appropriate downtime window (minutes) 2AM Sunday morning? Users are logged off the system The Patch file system is promoted to be the Run file system The Patch database edition is promoted to be the Run database edition Perform final maintenance operations Users are brought back online on the newly patched Run Edition

R12.2 Readiness report Online patching analysis report (ADZDCHKP.sql) Available for all releases prior to 12.2 Reports all violations of Non-Editioned Objects can t reference Editioned Objects EBS Code Custom Code Violations within E-Business Suite code are automatically fixed by the 12.2 upgrade Customer should study the report prior to upgrading to 12.2 to determine the scope of work for their custom code Most violations in custom code can be fixed by the 12.2 upgrade by simply registering the custom schema with EBS Only a small number of violations require human intervention

R12.2 Characteristics Downtime windows What operations other than applying patches do you perform? Can these operations be performed while the E-Business Suite is online? Customizations New utilities to help identify & correct compliance issues Advice on how to fix objects that are not compliant New set of coding standards for online patching Testing Patch Edition is not a testing environment Patches still need to be tested on a test system Consider new test scenarios Users can be Online during patch application

Summary of R12.2 and Online patching Much easier to negotiate downtime with lines of business Much easier to identify downtime windows as they are so brief Applications stays online during patch application 12.2 Upgrade is NOT an Online Patch 12.2 Upgrade Automatically fixes all compliances issues in EBS code Can automatically fix compliance issues in customizations Installs a logical view of the data model that all code must use to access the E-Business Suite All patches delivered post 12.2 will be Online Patches New patching tool (ADOP) used to apply patches

Enhanced User Experience with ENDECA Key information highlighted Google search Experience Charts to help you filter data View and search across Orgs Search on Flexfields

EBS Endeca In-Memory Accelerator Enhanced EBS Applications New Modern UI Experience Productivity Improvement for all Users Fully Integrated with the Transactional System Configurable, extensible Endeca Accelerator Hybrid search-analytical Engine Search, navigation, and analytics on diverse, changing information Interactive response at scale E-Business Suite Database No change to your database Support for all data types, Flexfields, FND Attachments, and all of your customizations Unstructured data

Database Tier Certifications & Exa-stack Tier Database Tier Oracle Golden Gate for platform migrations Active Data Guard for additional E-Business Suite reporting (e.g. Discoverer, OBIEE) Exa-Stack Tier Sizing and deployment best practices white paper Optimization of E-Business Suite on Exa-Stack Installation of R12.2 directly on Exa-Stack

Mobile Strategy for E-Business Suite (under evaluation) Mobile Browsers Mobile Apps from Oracle Custom Apps Mobile Apps from Oracle Custom Apps Safari on ipads All OA Framework screens Some inherent restrictions (e.g. can t upload attachments) Dedicated mobile apps for selected products Functions targetted at mobile users ADF Mobile Define standards Provide mobile APIs, services

Oracle R12.2 Take Aways On-line patching radically simplifies E-Business Suite maintenance and dramatically improves availability Thanks to ENDECA Oracle E-Business Suite will include performance and usability enhancements Mobile integrations could potentially revolutionize the way we access and use Oracle Technical enhancements will speed up the diagnostic, patch application, workflow and administration tasks Ready for R12?
