4 Problem statement Many business executives confronted by the necessity to transform business activity to become more environmentally sustainable remain uncertain about how they could and should transform current business practice.

5 Vendor business A vendor business making a transition to Sustainable ICT eight (8) steps: Awareness Investigation Determination Action Evaluation Proliferation Integration Business Opportunity.

6 Awareness SMT awareness of the carbon footprint and e- waste pollution issues. Relevance to organisation is still unclear. SMT commit to dedicate the time and resources ICT programme charter Business justification. Programme Manager (PgM) Project Managers (PM) Authority to apply organisational resources.

7 Investigation Investigation to determine how sustainable ICT impacts Internal company ICT Products developed Build awareness Problem areas Business drivers. Detailed data collection Energy consumption Pollution contribution Regulatory requirements.

8 Determination Individual projects are identified: Project charters Business justification High level estimation Time Cost Resources. Brought to the attention of SMT Commitment.

9 Determination Project scope statement Project deliverable requirements Boundaries Acceptance tests Scope control. Detailed project plan Chain of events Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Critical path analysis Gantt charts.

10 Determination PM to manage project activities like: Cost planning and budget Quality planning Human Resource Communications Risk Procurement Stakeholder engagement.

11 Action Each PM manages the implementation of solutions to reduce energy consumption and/or prevent pollution. Managed engagement with staff who will bear the brunt of change. Internal ICT systems Low hanging fruit Staff assistance to ID potential savings Products Log and evaluate. The life-cycle of whatever result the project realises must be considered as well as the life-cycle of the resources used in realising the result Reduce equipment mass and size Use innovative and renewable or recycled materials Replace potentially harmful materials Eliminate materials of concern.

12 Action System Verification and Testing Test criteria which: Physical handling tests. i.e. drop tests, heat and cold tests Functional tests Qualitative assessments Lab and real life tests Beta test customers Conduct tests over an extended period of time Load tests, extreme conditions. Verifying 'what goes in' 'what comes out'.

13 Evaluation Evaluation processes Metrics Appropriate Organisation-wide Expected results. Inform the development of business cases.

14 Proliferation A proactive seeking and implementation of organisation-wide strategies to reduce energy consumption and prevent pollution. Environmental reporting is a key element of this step to ensure the effectiveness of the strategies.

16 Business opportunity Exploit as a business opportunity. Promotion of sustainable ICT products/solutions: Engage in awareness activities and report successes Provide economic incentives Support legislation and regulations that encourage sustainable ICT.

19 Internal culture Define and monitor key ICT sustainability indicators and targets Make management responsible for ensuring that the environmental impacts of decisions are fully evaluated Develop employee guidelines and policies for sustainable use and disposal of ICT assets Develop marketing messages that demonstrate the business's commitment to sustainable ICT Communicate with other business functions about sustainable ICT related issues.

24 Class Assignment Group A netsolutions Limited Senior manager of a vendor company developing networking equipment you have been made aware that the flagship product netswitch has fallen foul of the latest RoHS and ewaste directives. Responsible for ~ 40% of the revenue for product line. Consider the consequences of the situation and the actions the company must take to redress the obvious risk.

List and discuss the medium-term steps the company must take to address the risk. Select 2 representatives to meet with a major affected customer to outline the company position.

Select 2 representatives to meet the vendor to discuss the situation At the end of this meeting a recommendation must be made to the SMT as to the perceived risk post meeting and suggested next steps.
