4 About The The Data Science Leadership brings together thought-leaders from the industry for an event acclaimed for its interactive sessions and high-level speakers. As organizations grow and the need to invest in data science in order to drive success becomes clear, support from senior leadership and a true understanding of the need for a data-driven culture is a necessity. This event will focus on how organizations can get started in Big Data, and how to create the right data science team. Speakers will share real-world examples of how they have benefited from creating a data-driven culture in their organizations. Illustrated intermittently with case studies and deep-dive discussions, the Data Science Leadership offers solutions and insight from the leaders in the space. With networking breaks and roundtable discussions also included, this event offers unique insight into how you can transform the focus of your organization around data science. Previous Speakers Nilesh Jain Lead Research Scientist Intel Labs Power of Relationship Challenges & Opportunity in Big Data Nilesh Jain is Sr. Research Scientist with the Cluster Computing Architecture team in Intel Labs. His current research focus is on emerging frameworks for large-scale machine learning and big data analytics. His other research interests include systems architectures and technologies that improve scaling, performance, and power consumption of distributed parallel computing. Before joining Intel Labs in 2007, Nilesh spent 11 years working on various telecom and I/O technologies within Intel product groups and at a premier telecom research organization (C- DOT) in India. Nilesh was an open source contributor to Linux Standard Base (LSB). Exploding growth in the discovery of knowledge from Big Data is fueling the study of data through relationships that can be expressed as graph. In this presentation, Nilesh will introduce graph based data mining and structured machine learning techniques that creates new opportunities for monetization by extracting high value out of Big Data. At the same time large-scale graph processing creates new system-level challenges that require careful distributed systems design Nell Thomas Group Manager, Data Etsy Nellwyn Thomas is an analyst on the Data team at Etsy, where she works closely with product, engineering, and senior management to scout, build, instrument and improve Etsy s product portfolio. Before Etsy, she worked on analytics and product teams at two small NYC area start-ups. Nell is a graduate of Harvard College, and holds a master s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Fostering a Data Culture In this talk, we will discuss how Etsy uses data to inform product development, from prioritization to experimentation to launch communication, and everything in between. At Etsy, we push code over 30 times a day and we have terabytes of data generated by the tens of millions of members of our community. This talk will cover the challenges of planning with continuous experimentation and deployment, as well as the evolution of Etsy's data culture.

5 Previous Speakers Taylor Phillips Manager, Data Science Square Taylor Phillips manages the data science and machine learning teams at Square, which are responsible for fraud detection and other data monetization strategies such as recommendation systems. Taylor brings a backend, infrastructure lens to the machine learning domain, helping architect a reliable, highly-available, real-time risk pipeline to support the rigorous requirements of the payments industry. Before Square, Taylor spent several years building and commanding an army of online poker bots. Data Science & Machine Square Square is making commerce easy for millions of merchants and customers in both online and offline environments. Many of Square's innovations that blew away industry standards, such as next day settlement and frictionless signup/underwriting, are enabled by powerful data science and machine learning. In this talk, we'll discuss Square's fraud detection pipeline and infrastructure, its evolution from startup to enterprise, and some things we learned along the way. We'll also look towards the future and share some strategies that Square is considering to monetize its rich, line-item data. Michael Li Data Scientist Foursquare Tianhui Michael Li is data scientist at Foursquare where he is responsible for building out the adaptive machinelearning infrastructure that powers venue recommendations and ads. Previously, he has worked at Andreessen Horowitz as a data scientist, Google as a software engineer, D.E. Shaw as a quant, and NASA as a nuclear physicist. He studied mathematics in Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar and completed his PhD at Princeton with support from the National Science Foundation and Hertz Foundation Fellowships. As a chronic but grateful recipient of scholarship funding, he is proud to serve on the board of New York Needs You, a non-profit that fights for social-economic mobility for low-income first-generation college students. Building a Data-Driven Culture: The Foursquare Experience Building a data-driven culture is one of the biggest challenges facing today s companies. I ll talk about our experience at Foursquare from hiring the right people, selecting key enabling technologies, building up business processes, and common-challenges and pitfalls. I ll also talk about some of the most impactful ways in which we use data for our company and our product. Mechie Nkengia Senior Data Scientist Groupon How Organizations are Utilizing Big Data and Data Science to Optimize their Operations Dr. Mechie Nkengla is Senior Data Scientist at Groupon, where she researches and operationalizes novel ways to turn Groupon's massive stores of financial data, consumer interactions, and past deals into actionable business insights. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Masters in Mathematical Computer Science. Her current and past work spans data mining and machine learning t e c h n i q u e s o v e r m a s s i v e s t r u c t u r e d and unstructured data, always with a focus on business/ engineering collaboration and requirements translation. She holds several patents and has done research at startups, government labs, and large companies alike. It's a challenge for organizations that now find they would like to leverage the stores of data they have been collecting, to optimize strategic decisions that will drive the direction of the organizations. The struggles they face include moving from a gut-intuition based model to a more data driven approach, identifying the truly relevant questions that they should be asking and even how to hire the right persons or teams to leverage this very important drive. The talk will focus on the above concepts and some solutions to the challenges.
