Fully-Integrated FTTx Deployment Digitizing and modernizing your workforce

Background Experience Highlights Led Project Management team for the deployment of the first private GPON build in NA in Oregon, USA (2005) Built and sold several fiber optic services companies (2011, 2014) Led the Engineering and Construction Services team for one of the globe s leading integrated providers of local access fiber products and services, passing 100K+ premises on an annual basis ( ) August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

What is Deployment at Scale? Characteristics Fully-integrated Design > Permit > Procure > Construct > Connect Deployment cycle time of 4 to 8 months Program sizes of 100K+ premises passed per year Why working at scale is different Strategies and coping mechanisms that work at lower volumes begin to fail at higher volumes Information management becomes a mission critical element to success August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Trends MARGIN Investors & developers demand: Lower costs Faster pace of delivery WORKING CAPITAL Changing standards Changing requirements Speed of delivery Increase in materials inventories Increase in labour pool INCREASED REPORTING Increased access to information Increased frequency of reporting Reporting and records are critical to cashflow August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

A Possible Culprit: A lot of data August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Challenges facing teams deploying at scale

Managing a large volume of complex data August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Integration of key IT systems August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Connecting with stakeholders August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Opportunities

Opportunities Reduce Costs Reduce Working Capital Shorten Deployment Cycle Improve Quality August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

#1 Collect and manage data in the cloud

Data Integrity Data integrity is a critical factor facing every large build program Rooted in the challenge facing most telecom assets: inaccurate existing plant records and inaccurate premise data Compounded by Revisions and updates to baseline premise data Evolving/changing standards (new products, etc.) Large cross-section of personnel updating/changing production data Network owners and the deployment labour force need to operate off of the same data Shared in real-time Available across the workforce on all devices Standards, plant records, designs, production records, schedules and inventories are all dynamic As such, they should to be published dynamically, in real-time Every single report is out-of-date, the moment it s published August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Mobile Data Collection Eliminate steps (i.e. delays) between your workforce and their data Find ways to collect and store data at the point it is produced Examples of activities that can be accomplished directly from a users mobile device: Counting and auditing premises Signing out materials Recording daily activity/production records August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Mobile Data Publishing Make deployment data ubiquitously available Critical data should be available anywhere, at anytime, from any device Up-to-date standards and requirements Up-to-date materials requirements and availability Up-to-date designs and permits Up-to-date schedule requirements August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Benefits of accessible, cloud-based data Everyone is accountable for data integrity Workforce makes better decisions Spend less time and money retrieving data and waiting for answers August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

2. Automate the integration of key IT systems

Understand and plan for integration Financial Accounting Inventory Management Schedule CAD/GIS August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Benefits of integrating key IT systems Teams spend less time transposing data Improved data integrity Reduce the silo effect August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

3. Connect with your stakeholders

Make Stakeholders Partners in Planning Engage stakeholders early Include stakeholders in your planning process Establish governance frameworks Critical for large stakeholders Schedule Consider integrating stakeholders into your IT infrastructure Stakeholders Budget August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Benefits of connecting your stakeholders Reduce budget and schedule surprises Improved cooperation and responsiveness Reduced administrative overhead August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

4. Make every decision a GIS based decision

Make more decisions based on GIS data Premise Data Dense urban block vs. Rural residential Permit Exceptions Impacts to isolated regions of the network? vs. Impacts to the entire network? Engineering/Construction Progress Not just how much (%), but where specifically? Which premises are affected? Availability of Materials How much inventory is available? vs. Where is that inventory available? Escalation Management Volume of escalations vs. The location of escalations August 15, 2018 ISE Expo

Benefits of increasing the use of GIS data Improves accuracy of reporting Employees make better decisions Drives the efficiency of labour August 15, 2018 ISE Expo
