1 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/12/12 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program PART I - DUNN CHAP. #11 & 12: Dunn Chapter 11: 1) From the list below please choose an incorrect point about Lightweight wood truss systems? (Dunn Chapter 11) A) Lightweight wood truss systems use wood members as small as 2 x 4 inches. B) Lightweight wood truss systems are connected by sheet metal surface fasteners, called gusset plates or gang nails. C) Sheet metal connectors are critical to the integrity of the truss during a fire. D) The sheet metal fastener has many V-shaped points punched through it. E) The V-shaped nailing points fasten only the surface of the 2 x 4 inch wood truss. F) The V-shaped points penetrate the wood surface to a depth of only one inch. G) Lightweight trusses may collapse after only about 10 minutes in a fully developed fire. 2) Because of severe hazards associated with truss construction New York has a law requiring to identify truss construction? (Dunn, chapter 11) A) one horizontal line B) two horizontal lines C) two vertical lines D) three vertical lines 3) The rate of fire spread inside a building s concealed spaces that utilizes parallel chord lightweight truss will be faster than in concealed spaces of a building with conventional solid wood beam construction. Please fill in the blank? (Dunn, chapter 11) A) 100% B) 50% C) 75% D) 25% 4) The recommended strategy for fighting a fire in a building with a lightweight wood truss roof or floors is: Please choose the correct strategies from the list below according to Dunn? (Dunn, chapter 11) A) Content fire; if fire is burning content such as a couch or mattress, stretch an interior hoseline and extinguish the fire. B) Structure fire; if fire involves the structure and is burning throughout the concealed roof or floor spaces, the occupants should be removed and an exterior attack should be used. 1 Dunn Chap. #11 & 12

2 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/12/2012 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program Dunn Chapter 12: 1) Ceilings are non load bearing structural elements that support only their own weight. Their collapse does not cause the collapse of other structural parts, however ceilings can drop over firefighters and trap them inside burning buildings. Two types of ceilings; those that are directly affixed to the floor or roof joist above and those that are suspended several inches or feet below the joists by vertical strips of wood, steel hangers, or thin wires. Please choose the other correct point(s) about directly affixed ceilings from the list below? (Dunn, chapter 12) A) Older buildings have lath and plaster ceilings which have strips of wood or wire lath nailed to the underside of the joist. Several coats of wet gypsum plaster, is applied to the underside of the lath. B) Newer buildings use dry gypsum board, 4 by 8 in area, 1/4 to 3/8 thick, nailed directly to the underside of the joists. C) At fires a directly affixed ceiling usually collapses in small pieces, rather than in one large section. This usually does not cause serious injury, since only the sheathing falls, not the wood or metal lath above it. D) When the plaster is only 1-2 inches thick & the firefighter is equipped with a properly fitted helmet there is usually no serious injury. E) In older structures, where plaster ceilings are 3-4 inches thick, and feet in height, the collapse of a large area of thick heavy plaster can knock a firefighter unconscious or cause a serious head or neck injury. 2) The most dangerous ceiling is a ceiling. Please fill in the blank? (Dunn, chapter 12) 3) Suspended ceilings are most often found in 3 types of occupancies; stores, top floors of multiple dwellings, and renovated buildings. These ceilings, sometimes called dropped ceilings or hanging ceilings are constructed several inches or feet below the supporting roof or floor joists above. Please choose an incorrect choice concerning suspended ceilings from the list below? (Dunn, chapter 12) A) In stores, these ceilings are used to cover older ceilings, which are now out of fashion and found above. B) On the top floor of multiple dwellings it creates a space to insulate a top floor from sun rays. C) In renovated buildings it s found on every floor of every apartment and is used to reduce the floor height to conserve the energy for heating & cooling the apartment. D) Suspended ceilings present a serious collapse hazard to firefighters when they fail at fires, because the hanger or vertical supports are destroyed by flame, the entire grid framework in addition to the ceiling sheathing collapses. E) It should also be noted that before a suspended ceiling collapse there is always a rapid fire increase. 2 Dunn Chap. #11 & 12

3 Fire Tech Promotion Course 11/12/12 Fall 2012 On-line Homework Program 4) The 3 most common types of suspended ceilings are the wood grid system with a permanently affixed ceiling, the metal grid system with a permanently affixed ceiling, and the lightweight metal grid system with a removable panel ceiling. The ceiling collapse killing most NYC FF s is the. Please fill in the blank? (Dunn, chapter 12) A) wood grid B) metal grid C) lightweight metal grid 5) Immediately after a wood grid suspended ceiling collapses, there is sometimes a rapid increase in fire in the space directly over the fallen ceiling. When a ceiling collapses in one large section the following can occur: Please choose the correct items from the list above? (Dunn, chapter 12) A) The air space below the ceiling is momentarily compressed. B) The air space above the fallen ceiling is momentarily placed under a vacuum. C) If the grid system is constructed of wood, the fire will be fueled by the fallen ceiling grid on the floor and by the joists above. There will be very little time to rescue firefighters trapped below this ceiling. D) The most important 1 st step to rescue members trapped under a collapsed ceiling during a store fire is to sweep the collapse area below the ceiling with a hose line and knock down the flames. E) A ladder should be ready at every fire to rescue trapped victims or firefighters suddenly trapped by ceiling collapse and fire 6) At a ceiling collapse in a store, if members are trapped in shelters / voids at the rear of a store under a suspended ceiling, please choose the correct tactics to use in order to effect their rescue? (Dunn, chapter 12) A) Rescue attempts should be made from adjoining stores; a partition wall, separating stores in a large one-story building, can be penetrated faster than a rear masonry wall. Windows or doors at the rear of a store are usually bricked up or securely locked. B) Hose lines should be positioned into adjoining stores to prevent fire spread when attempting a rescue from an adjoining store. C) Entry into a store beneath a ceiling collapse can sometimes be achieved from below; going down an outside cellar entrance may allow access to the store via an interior cellar entrance. D) The IC should try to limit the number of members participating in the rescue attempt. The combined weight of rescuers can be greater than the weight of the fallen ceiling and can crush the members trapped below. 3 Dunn Chap. #11 & 12
