1 Carboset AE-960 Acrylic Emulsion TECHNICAL DATA SHEET DESCRIPTION Lubrizol Carboset AE-960 is a high solids, water based 100% acrylic emulsion specifically developed for elastomeric vertical masonry coatings. High performance coatings can be formulated using CST AE- 960 for a variety of construction materials including concrete block, brick, stucco and EIFS and fibercement surfaces. These coatings are applied at approximately 10 mils dry and have elongation between 200 and 400%. CST AE-960 based masonry coatings have superior performance on masonry relative to architectural coatings and are more economical than elastomeric masonry coatings typically applied at 20 mils dry. CST AE-960 provides a unique combination of properties. Coatings based on CST AE-960 have demonstrated excellent dirt pick-up resistance, efflorescence resistance, water resistance and weathering leading to clean long lasting coating performance. They have also exhibited good tint retention and non-yellowing characteristics resulting in consistent coating color and appearance over time. CST AE-960 was developed to provide high alkali resistance for greater application flexibility (time, substrate) including application with or without primers. The inherent CST AE-960 polymer properties allow for coatings that have good color acceptance, pass cold temperature crack bridging tests, and perform well in freeze / thaw conditions. CST AE-960 based coatings have good adhesion to masonry, wood and metal substrates. SUGGESTED APPLICATIONS Elastomeric coatings for masonry facades Coatings for fresh concrete and hot stucco PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES PERFORMANCE BENEFITS Excellent resistance to dirt pick-up Clean, long-lasting coatings Excellent efflorescence and alkali resistance Consistent coating color and appearance Excellent water resistance Application flexibility Excellent adhesion to cementicious substrates HSE compliance Excellent binding power for fillers and pigments Excellent weathering performance Excellent crack bridging performance PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 1 Appearance Milky White Emulsion Elongation (%) Solids, weight (%) 55.0 ± 1.0 Freeze/Thaw Stability Passes 5 Cycles Solids, volume (%) Density (g/ml) 54.0 ± Thermal Stability Mechanical Stability Density (lbs/gallon) 8.5 Tg ( o C) -25 Viscosity, Brookfield (cps) 2,000 cps max. 7 Page 7 FORMULATION SUGGESTIONS Dispersants Dispersant optimization is required to attain maximum titanium dioxide efficiency, extender pigment wetting, and stability in the paint formulation. If too little dispersant is used pigment settling, hiding and color acceptance may be compromised. If too much is used, water sensitivity of the dry film can result. Refer to dispersant manufacturers recommended levels for formulation amounts. Recommended dispersant include: Tamol 681 Tamol 851 mildew growth the following film preservatives can be used. Nopcocide N-40D Polyphase AF-1 Polyphase P20T Polyphase CST Polyphase 641 Rozone 2000 Skane M8 Zinc Omadine Kadox 915 Henkel Arch ZCA RHEOLOGY Carboset AE-960 is compatible with a wide range of rheological additives. White Pigments The choice of suitable titanium dioxide grade is an important factor in achieving desired balance of appearance and critical performance properties. Recommended dry grade titanium dioxides include: Natrosol 330PA Acrysol RM825 Acrysol TT615 Rheolate 300 Aqualon Elementis Ti-Pure R902 Ti-Pure R-960 Kronos 2101 DuPont DuPont Kronos Extender Pigments Synthetic and extender pigments can be used in formulations containing Albuvil DSA760. For optimum hiding, film build and cost efficiency, the following pigments can be used. Minex Nytal Duramite Omyacarb Unimin R.T.Vanderbilt Imerys Omya Film Preservatives Coatings used for exterior applications may be susceptible to mildew growth.
