POLYURETHANE WET AREA MEMBRANE Ure-plex PRODUCT TYPE Single pack moisture cure polyurethane waterproof membrane. The cured film forms a one piece waterproof skin that is formed in situ. DESCRIPTION / USE Ure-plex is a single component polyurethane waterproofing membrane which creates an elastomeric waterproofing system. The film is very flexible, highly elastic, yellow in colour and will not bleed through or stain porous overlaid materials such as marble or natural stone. It provides excellent resistance to chemicals, is non re-emulsifying, features excellent workability and comes ready to use with no mixing required. 1.1Astec Ure-plex Ure-plex is suitable for waterproofing internal wet areas including shower recess bases (membrane forms a shower tray) and associated floors and walls. The membrane can be used to waterproof concrete, cement render brick and block work, fibre reinforced cement sheeting, water resistant plaster board, and plywood or particle board flooring. The membrane cures in C (longer in lower temp.) has tenacious bond strength to virtually all common building substrates, and can be overlaid with ceramic or clay tiles, slate, stone and many other hard wearing floor surfaces. Astec Paints are a 100% Australian owned company committed to the research and development of technologically advanced coatings that provide premium durability against our harsh Australian conditions. Our coatings are manufactured with high regard for worker safety and environmental care and will provide you with absolute confidence in long term performance.

ASTEC TECHNICAL SERVICES & SUBSTRATE ADHESION Astec Technical Services (A.T.S) aim to help eliminate potential field problems by pre-testing Astec Ure-plex with samples of building materials on which the membrane will be applied. Astec Technical Services are available to test any samples of substrate where the specifier/purchaser/ applicator may have doubts regarding the product s suitability. The tests carried out will aid in determining the proper surface preparation method. Following this procedure will remove many of the unknown variables that affect field success. Please contact your Astec Representative for further details. PREPARATION All surfaces must be clean, dry, free of voids, curing compounds, projections, loose materials, oil, grease, sealers, and loose or flaky paint and determined to be structurally sound before the application of Astec Ure-plex. New concrete must be completely cured and free of water prior to Ure-plex application. Typical curing time is usually 28 days but may vary depending on weather conditions. A fresh concrete deck must pass a four hour rubber mat test and no moisture showing on the under side of the mat is required to pass. The rubber mat must have all of its edges securely taped to the deck during the test, we recommend using highly adhesive gaffer tape or musicians tape. APPLICATION DATA PRIMING Astec Ure-plex polyurethane membrane generally does not require priming, except in applications where reverse moisture migration is possible. This may occur in new concrete where some climatic conditions are such that the moisture content can remain above 75%, even after the 28 days normally required for curing. In the event that the surface of any substrate material is questionable or if excessive moisture is present, or is expected to be present, it is recommended that Astec Rivett be applied as a vapour barrier before application of Ure-plex wet area membrane. In the event that moisture migration is imminent, apply Astec Rivett to the entire surface at a coverage rate of no more [ 2 ]

APPLICATION DATA PRIMING than 6m² per litre, with a second coat being applied, if necessary, on highly porous, absorbant substrates. Any additional coats of Rivett should be applied at a rate sufficient only to seal and lock any highly absorbant areas of the substrate without leaving a fully glossed film. Extreme care should be taken during sealer application to ensure complete coverage and penetration of the substrate. NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEAL THE SURFACE WITHOUT LEAVING A FULL GLOSS FILM. In the event that Ure-plex is to be applied to a material with a specially treated surface or surface with unusual characteristics, consult Astec for a primer recommendation. Alternatively, conduct a test patch with a small amount of the product on the prepared surface. The test patch is done to evaluate the products adhesion to the surface and should be carried out prior to commencement of the entire project. WASTE OUTLET TREATMENT There are two methods used during product application in areas around the waste outlets. Method one, used when the floor waste is installed prior to membrane installation, in this case the membrane is sealed to the waste flange. Method two, for use when the waste pipe has been trimmed flush with the substrate, provides that the membrane is turned down into the waste pipe and the waste grate is set to floor level. BOND BREAKER APPLICATION Termination points between plasterboard and/or fibre cement sheets and flooring that have a gap between them that is greater than 3mm should first be filled with an oversized, closed cell foam backer rod. This recess, along with all the other wall to floor and vertical corners should then be sealed with a fillet of Astec Ure-seal (fast cure polyurethane sealant) and allowed to cure prior to any application of the membrane. (See Diagram 2, page 5) [ 3 ]

APPLICATION DATA FLASHING AND COVE TREATMENT Vertical surfaces such as drains, pipes and walls should be flashed by coating both the vertical and horizontal surfaces with 1mm to 1.2mm of Astec Ure-plex membrane at least 150mm in both the vertical and horizontal directions from the junction. Metal flashing rings, collars, drains and the like should be treated in the same manner. Allow the flashing to set and re-coat with 1mm of Astec Ure-plex membrane. CRACK TREATMENT After cleaning and any sealer application, fill all minor cracks with a scratch coat application of Astec Ure-plex, observe and repeat until no cracks remain. Cracks greater than 3mm must be cleaned, filled with an appropriate sized closed cell backer rod then coated with Astec Ure-plex, 70mm either side of the crack, while embedding the 100mm polyester matt centred over the crack. 6 APPLICATION METHOD ONE: WHERE THE MEMBRANE IS TO BE APPLIED ABOVE ANY LEVELING MORTAR LAYER AND SHALL BE IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE INTENDED TILE SYSTEM, IE. CERAMIC TILE, GROUT AND SETTING MATERIALS. (SEE DIAGRAM 5) METHOD 2: WHERE THE MEMBRANE IS TO BE APPLIED BELOW ANY LEVELING MORTAR. (SEE DIAGRAM 6) TECHNIQUE Apply a coat of Astec Ure-plex with a 3mm V-notch tile trowel or brush using enough pressure to achieve good contact to the substrate. Smooth uniformly with the flat side of the trowel at a 45 degree angle to give a uniform thickness of 1-2mm. The membrane must be applied not less than 25mm above the maximum water height from the floor tile level and 1800mm high x 100mm wide on vertical walls. For hobless showers the membrane is extended not less than 75mm up the walls from the finished floor tile level. A continuous 1mm thickness is required to ensure the membrane s waterproof integrity. Astec recommends that after initial set takes place (6-12 hours depending on humidity and temperature), the surface should be inspected for any voids, pin holes or air bubbles. If any of these are evident seal with a second coat of Astec Ure-plex membrane. COVERAGE RATE WHEN USED AS A MEMBRANE When Ure-plex is used as a membrane the coverage rate will vary depending on thickness: 1m² per 1mm thick 0.75m² per 1.33mm thick [ 6 ]

TYPICAL CURE TIME Astec Ure-plex waterproof membrane will take approximately 24 hours to cure, with a thickness of 1mm to 1.2mm, at a temperature of 25 C. The cure time will vary according to sealant thickness, ambient temperature and relative humidity. TILING AND MORTAR BED COVERAGE This may be carried out after Ure-plex has been allowed to cure (approximately 24 hours at a temperature of 25 C, slightly longer in lower temperatures). To eliminate possible surface contamination, tiling or mortar bedding should be carried out within 72 hours of membrane application. TILE ADHESIVE A solvent free tile adhesive should be used that is suited to the substrate levels and compatible with the tile type. It must be applied in strict compliance with the manufacturers instructions. Diagram 7. WATER PROOFING/ANTI-FRACTURE MEMBRANE CERAMIC TILE FLOORS [ 8 ]
