ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT NATURAL VENTILATION Arcadia provides assistance in early project design stage to assist in achieving increased NABERS and Green Star ratings by incorporating natural ventilation solutions. A natural ventilation system will provide proven long term energy efficiency and assist by reducing the projects carbon footprint. To provide an environmentally sustainable solution it is paramount to understand how natural elements affect ventilation performance. The Arcadia technical team has the know-how and experience required to work in conjunction with designers to incorporate the Strand HC to achieve the most naturally effective ventilation solutions with optimal performance. It is important to define building factors which could restrict or assist natural ventilation performance. These could include external environment, internal environment, wind effect, pressure relief, and inlet air. Once they have been identified Arcadia can assist with engineering design calculations and ventilation modelling, which when managed correctly will form a functional and effective natural ventilation solution NUROOF (W.A) PTY LTD

STRAND HC ROOF VENTILATOR FUNCTION Arcadia Strand HC Ventilators are positioned at the ridge or on the slope of a building roof providing heat, fume and smoke relief. The Strand HC is the highest capacity offered by Arcadia and has been the ventilator of choice by engineers, designers and roofing since Engineered for use in all terrain regions of Australia, the Strand HC can be manufactured in a kit-form system or in prefabricated modules which allow reduced installation time and an increased measure of safety. As the ventilator is directly mounted to the buildings steel structure, Arcadia recommends designers contact our team at the early design stage of the project to discuss the required mounting and connection, mass and dimension details which will affect structural member size selection. Failure to incorporate a natural ventilation system into the building design may result in: low fresh air levels, low oxygen levels, increased heat loads, machine failure, operational dysfunction and reduced productivity. In applications where complete control of air flow is required, the Strand HC offers operating dampers which can be controlled and integrated with the Building Management System. BENEFITS Environmentally sustainable solution Reduced energy consumption Smoke and fire management Tested to AS2428 (fire, wind & rain and coefficient of discharge) CSIRO tested Designed to suit all Cyclonic Regions Australian designed and manufactured Prefabricated modules for reduced high risk works and onsite installation time Improved workplace environment Increased building life cycle Reduced structural requirements Ventilation project design assessment and report Market leading performance and functionality Aesthetically pleasing profile ARCADIA STRAND HIGH CAPACITY ROOF VENTILATION 5

ARCADIA STRAND HC PERFORMANCE Arcadia have been experts in natural ventilation solutions since 1967 and understand the influencing factors that will result in successful natural ventilation performance. The Arcadia Strand HC has been CSIRO tested achieving an average coefficient of discharge of 0.76 (for ventilation performance data see Exhaust Capacity Table page 9). With this testing and performance data, Arcadia have been able to maintain ongoing development of the Strand HC which allows an ultimate performance standard. The Strand HC has a reputation for high performance, enduring harsh and demanding environments. Failure to incorporate a well designed natural ventilator may result in back drafting, misting and defence against inclement weather. ENGINEERING When selecting ventilation products, it is important to consider engineering requirements. The Arcadia Strand HC has been specified by Consultants and Engineers across Australia including cyclonic regions in both on-shore and offshore locations. Arcadia s innovative engineering has produced one of Australia s largest high capacity ventilators with a throat opening width of 4.5m (see inset 1 page 16). Engineers considering the application of Strand HC on a upcoming project should determine how the ventilator will interconnect with the structural steel work. Arcadia s Design & Project Management Team is available to work with you to provide expert advice on what structural support is required. SAFETY The Strand HC has two deiniive features that make it stand out when it comes to safety these include: the option of harness anchor points and prefabricated modules. The Safety harness anchor system is integrated within the structural framing system of the ventilator which allows safe access for future roof works and maintenance. Arcadia s ability to prefabricate modules reduces the time required for working at heights when installing the ventilator. The module is crane lifted and bolted into place rather than being assembled in kit-form on the roof. As always Arcadia are striving towards providing safer solutions. TESTING & CERTIFICATION The Strand HC is a tested product by CSIRO to AS &.2 (Rain & Wind),.4 (Fire) and.5 (Coefficient of discharge). This gives Engineers and Specifiers peace of mind and enables Arcadia to provide an accurate and responsive design solution. Arcadia is consistently investing and collaborating with researchers and Engineers to improve product performance NUROOF (W.A) PTY LTD

ARCADIA STRAND HC PROJECT SUPPORT Arcadia has in-house Project Managers, Design Engineers and Ventilation Experts. This team can assist at design stage to provide calculation reports in conjunction with the relevant standards, codes and mechanical requirements to achieve the most economical but effective solution. Arcadia are able to respond promptly to any query that arises from concept to commissioning. This has enabled Arcadia to successfully support many projects across Australia. The team are on call during the installation process and are able to support roofing or cladding contractors onsite. Our local presence and Australian based manufacturing facility guarantees project back-up in the event of unforeseen installation complications. SMOKE & FIRE Arcadia s Strand HC Ventilator has been tested to CSIRO (smoke and fire). This testing allows Arcadia to help designers to comply with building code regulations. Many projects have seen the Strand HC successfully integrated with the Building Fire System to assist in the control and exhaust of smoke in the event of a fire. Fire Engineers and certifying authorities are encouraged to contact Arcadia Team to discuss this further. ACOUSTIC With Arcadia s Strand HC noise control solution it is not necessary to lose the benefits of natural ventilation due to noise pollution requirements. Strand HC has been designed as an option to incorporate a high performing noise absorption material. As air is exhausted through the ventilator the acoustic lining minimises noise transmission from the building. This also limits the transmission of noise entering the building. The acoustic lining has high flame retardant and chemical resistant properties. DAMPER CONTROL The optional Strand HC damper system provides complete control of the ventilation scheme. The ability to electrically or pneumatically operate the dampers provides comprehensive control throughout changing seasons with the ability to provide a high level of weather defence. When dampers are activated the rainwater is redirected to an internal drainage system which disperses to the building roof. Dampers can be incorporated for smoke hazard management or building protection in the event of a cyclone. MODULAR AND KIT FORM Arcadia has innovatively developed a pre-assembled ventilator system ready for easy installation. The ventilator can be installed as a module reducing labour and high risk work. Through early design involvement, Arcadia will outline the exact location for structural support connection points which allows the Strand HC Ventilator to be dropped in to position and fitted with ease. This has been carried out in all Regions including Cyclonic Region D. Arcadia also provides Kit Form Ventilators which are delivered to site in component form which are assembled and installed on the roof. ARCADIA STRAND HIGH CAPACITY ROOF VENTILATION 7

DESIGN PARAMETERS EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT There are three influencing external factors which need to be considered when designing a natural ventilation system for your project. These include location, building size & shape and climatic conditions. The location of the building includes geographical topography, region and terrain category as determined by the Australian Building Code and surrounding elements. This will also affect the engineering design requirements which will influence structural connection details. Building size, shape and footprint will all be influencing factors on the final ventilation design outcome. The height of the building will influence the stack height and the roof layout will determine the requirement for ridge or slope ventilators. It is also necessary to consider all air inlet louvres and permanent intake / exhaust apertures. Key climatic items include prevailing wind direction, ambient temperature and wind speed. An effective solution for a building utilises the prevailing breezes which increases the exhaust rate and assists to enhance your ventilation scheme when designed correctly. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT There are three influencing internal factors which need to be considered when designing a natural ventilation system for your project. These include internal machinery and working activities, quantity of personnel and type of goods warehoused. Internal activities produce heat and based on your building machinery there may be production of smoke, fumes or extreme heat loads which need to be considered and controlled adequately. Based on the internal activities it is important to consider the air changes per hour which will vary greatly for example: a warehouse will have low ventilation requirements compared to the high ventilation requirements of a foundry. In applications where there are large numbers of personnel working in the building, it is important for fresh air inlet and exhaust to provide acceptable atmospheric conditions where work can be performed comfortably, safely and efficiently by removing heat and toxic air content. Warehoused goods (such as chlorine, gas or ammonium) can emit toxic fumes inside the building. In such applications the building will require effective exhaust ventilation, coupled with fresh air inlets to ensure there is no build up of fumes that will create a health hazard to personnel. Natural ventilation requirements should be designed into the building at early stages of project planning. Items that affect the parameters of the designs exist in the internal and external environments NUROOF (W.A) PTY LTD

R DESIGN THEORY NATURAL VENTILATION DESIGN THEORY There are many variables internally and externally that will effect a natural ventilation solution for any building. Designers should consider stack height, wind effect, inlet air, back drafting and misting to ensure effective design. The air exchanged between low pressure cool air and rising high pressure hot air is commonly known as Venturi Effect. STACK HEIGHT The stack height is the vertical distance between the median inlet air point and top point of the Arcadia Strand HC air outlet. Therefore an increased Stack Height will result in greater exhaust performance. A well designed natural ventilation scheme should aim to have the exhaust outlet located at the highest point of the building, this maximizes the wind effect from all directions. The benefit of stack height and natural ventilation design has been used for centuries on buildings such as tepees. Termite mounds display a natural application of this. INLET AIR The position of the air inlets is essential for balancing the interior and exterior air-pressure. Adequate inlet ventilation eliminates back-drafting which increases the ventilation performance. It is recommended to establish a natural ventilation ratio of (inlet) 1.5 : 1 (outlet). Arcadia can be contacted for technical assistance to discuss a suitable solution specific to a project. Arcadia offer a range of fixed and operable inlet air products suitable to specific building design requirements. The operable inlet air products integrate with a building management system to establish an ultimate controlled natural ventilation solution. WIND EFFECT Wind provides two benefits in the natural ventilation scheme. It provides positive inlet air pressure (generally via a strategically distribution of inlet air louvres) and also provides a negative pressure as the wind passes over the roof exhaust ventilators. The introduction of wind factor increases the performance of natural ventilation schemes. Wind effect will vary in different climatic regions and it is essential to consider the area topography and wind patterns to take best advantage of natural forces. Through correct positioning of roof and slope natural ventilation systems prevailing breezes will be utilised to encourage hot stale air to be drawn out of the building. BACK-DRAFTING Failure to follow the correct design guidelines can result in backdrafting & misting. This is when the designed airflow path is reversed and an exhaust outlet acts as a suction point. This is the result of a poorly designed ventilation scheme or ventilator and highlights the need to clearly understand the basic principles and utilise tried and tested products. This is a key strength of Arcadia Strand HC. Arcadia s Strand HC has been engineered to minimise the allowance of back-drafting and misting by incorporating internal components, wind jump diaphragms, guide vane and water deflectors, and of course the option of control dampers. 16 PROJECT PROFILE The Amcor Glass Plant in the Barossa Valley in South Australia is one of many industrial building projects to benefit from the Arcadia Strand HC. Integrating one of the largest natural roof ventilators, significant planning was the catalyst for a robust and correctly calibrated product that would effectively manage the extreme heat loads produced from the furnaces which produce around 600,000 glass bottles per day. Arcadia became the selection of choice for the contractors due to its ability to provide the project with a complete ventilation scheme. This included Strand HC natural roof ventilators and Hush Acoustic Inlet air louvres and Acoustic treatment. With Arcadia being a National supplier of Australian made products, Arcadia was involved for technical consultation during the engineering design process, which was followed by a turn-key manufacture, installation and project management solution covering the entire scope of the works The picture above represents the considerable size of the Strand HC Ventilator which is used to effectively exhaust the extreme heat loads on this Project. With a clear throat opening of 4.5 metres, the ventilator stands 4.2 metres high with an overall width of 10 metres. It also incorporates a complete operating damper system which is all pneumatically controlled. Due to logistical restrictions, the Ventilator was manufactured in Kit Form and assembled on site. 2 In contrast to image 1, we can see that although a building may be larger, it doesn t mean it requires a larger ventilator. This can be determined when following Arcadia s guidelines to internal and external environment factors (refer to page 14) which determine the building s ventilation requirements. Since this is a warehouse with low heat loads and low occupancy, it can be controlled by a smaller ventilation scheme. 3 A complete ventilation scheme must incorporate inlet air. The image above shows Arcadia Hush Acoustic wall louvres for inlet air and noise attenuation. These incorporate a pneumatically controlled damper system to prevent back drafting, prevention of weather and dust control in abnormal storm conditions. Arcadia s ability to preassemble Hush Acoustic louvre panels as large as 3.8 m wide x 4 m high allowed an effective and efficient solution NUROOF (W.A) PTY LTD

ACCESSORIES OPTIONS Arcadia offers a range of accessories that can be tailored to suit the unique requirements of each project. The Strand HC Ventilator has optional features that can be fitted to manage changing weather and environmental conditions. VENT-LITE The Arcadia Vent-lite allows ambient light to permeate into the building delivering a soft diffused light. Designers integrate this to increase inlet of natural light which can positively impact on internal work environment conditions. MESH Arcadia stock a range of bird, vermin, insect & ember mesh in a variety of base materials. When selecting mesh, consideration should be given to corrosion resistance and airflow. ACOUSTIC DAMPENING Strand HC can be internally lined with Acoustic absorption foam which ensures reduction of noise emissions from the Ventilator. Facilities for heavy manufacturing, power generation, water pumping and desalination have taken advantage of this for many years by incorporating the Strand HC with added acoustic attenuation. DAMPER CONTROL The damper system can be controlled pneumatically or electrically to allow the control of air and heat dispersion. This is ideal for seasonal operational adjustments and can be coupled with rain and wind sensors to respond to fluctuating weather conditions. SENSORS Arcadia provide a range of sensors that allow total control and integration with the Strand HC. This allows monitoring and response to temperature, rain, wind, humidity, air quality, smoke and fumes. CONTROL PANEL Arcadia offers a customised control panel designed to suit the specific building requirements. This provides a centralised location to control, link and manage the Strand HC with your building management and fire systems. Strand HC Ventilation has a greater energy efficiency, increased life span, minimal maintenance and lower carbon footprint when compared with mechanically powered ventilation.
