1 Flat Pack Furniture Design Project Assessment Task Length: Will depend on individual projects Marks / value: Project: 40% Design Folio: 30% Date due: Design Folio progress mark Week 9 / Term 2 (Section 1, 2 and 3) Design Folio Week 10 / Term 3 Project - Week 10 / Term 3 Task: Design and construct a piece of flat pack furniture. Special instructions: You will only have approximately 10 weeks to construct your project. The project size and complexity will need to reflect this. You must discuss your project idea with and have it approved by your teacher. The project must be completed at school but some elements may be done at home with teacher approval. Each student will be allocated materials to the value of approximately $80. You will need to cover any additional costs should your project exceed $80. Purpose of this assignment: The key to success in this project is creative and effective design. To do this, you will need to conduct thorough research and explore lots of different design ideas. 3 Section 1 - Brainstorming and investigation Exploration of the brief Brainstorm (create a mind map or similar diagram) to extensively explore the design brief. You should address factors such as: Possible needs and opportunities at home Your interests Time available Financial constraints Availability of materials (available at school or locally) Availability of equipment (available at school) Your skills and ability Transporting the project home. Investigation What is flat pack furniture? What are the characteristics of flat pack furniture? Materials: Flat pack furniture is often constructed from sheets of manufactured boards including particle board, plywood and fibreboard. What does this mean? How does marine ply differ from normal ply wood? Fastening methods: Describe the fasteners (eg screws, dowels etc.) or joining systems are commonly used to join and secure flat pack furniture. Is there a fastening system that you would like to trial or test? Include images of both fasteners. Finishes: Make a list of possible finishes that can be applied to manufactured boards such as plywood. Are there any finishes that you would like to experiment with or trial? List the main properties, advantages and disadvantages of wipe on polyurethane vs tung oil. Include images of both type of product and a project or timber that it has been applied to. Existing solutions and inspiration Collect pictures of existing flat pack furniture pieces (search CNC furniture, plywood furniture and flat pack) that have caught your eye. Page 4

5 Identify features that could be incorporated into your design or have given you possible ideas for your project. (That is, talk about the features you like - state why you like them, the joinery techniques you can see - what jobs they are performing in the furniture or any ideas that existing solution has given you) A minimum of 6 images is required. Two of these images are to be of existing projects that are not in the category of the type of thing you want to make. E.G. if you are making a coffee table then you must find two sources of inspiration that are not coffee tables. You may wish to present you research in a table such as the example below. Remember, you have to give REASONS to back up your opinions. E.g. below Joinery techniques and their jobs I like how the shape of the top half of the end pieces is the same shape as the other sections which would allow for easy replication. I like how there is a spacer between each solid section giving it the skeleton look. In this section I am looking for you to examine the image and describe how it is put together or might be put together, based on your knowledge of the joint researched and used in term 1 E.G. It is either made from a lot of cross halving joints (underneath the table top because I can t see them in this picture) which would be keeping the spaces even Or just a sandwich construction with glue, full size bits and shorter bits to create the gap effect. 6 Concept sketches After your research is complete, generate as many of your own ideas as possible (minimum of different designs). Each design must be drawn neatly in perspective view on A4 (or A3) paper. Each design should include annotations. Indicate the main materials used and approximate dimensions in each design. Use the following as examples: How the design meets the need How it will interact within the space it will be used Aesthetics reference to time & cost Complexity/skills Scale CAD rendered model Produce scale CAD model of your project that includes: rendering surface textures perspective projection Import your CAD image into your design folio document when complete. Orthographic drawing Using your CAD model, produce an orthographic drawing of your project. Show all dimensions. There are instructional videos on Google Drive/Classroom to assist with this task. Cutting plan Complete a cutting plan for your project as shown in the picture below. This could be done using CAD software. Page 6

7 Section 3 - Project Realisation and Management Finance plan Research the cost of the materials required for your project using a table similar to the one below: (This is an example only. You must discuss a minimum of 3 design factors. Example (for a hardwood dining chair) Factors Ergonomics Analysis The chair has been designed to maximise human comfort through the inclusion of the following features: A curved and tall backrest to support the upper body. The seat will be contoured and padded to make it comfortable for extended periods of sitting. The front of the seat has a curved edge. This will avoid the chair cutting into the back of the legs. The dining chair will support a person during meal times. As it will be used at a dining table, armrests are not required. The omission of armrests will make it easier to get in and out of the chair. People with a variety of different body shapes and sizes will use the chair. Therefore, I will need to consider anthropometric data in the development of Page 7

8 the overall chair dimensions. In order to accommodate for the average body size, the chair will need to have the following dimensions: 00mm seat height 400mm seat depth and width etc. Durability The dining chair should last indefinitely if looked after properly. The frame of the chair will be constructed from brush box timber (a hardwood timber). Hardwood timber is typically denser than softwood timber and should therefore be stronger and more durable. The timber will be finished with an interior polyurethane coating. This should seal the timber and help to prevent it from drying out. I will use nylon scuff pads on the bottom of the chair legs. This will prevent the bottom of the legs from being damaged when the chair is manoeuvred. Design factors include: ergonomics, durability, obsolescence, quality, human capacity (knowledge, skills), safety, values, ethics, available resources, industrial/workplace legislation, effect on society, effect on environment, short term consequences, long term consequences, etc. Risk assessment and management Outline how you will manage the risks associated with the construction of your project. 9 Keep a photo journal to document the construction of your project. Each photo should include a caption which may address things such as: What was achieved Justification of any design decisions made Problems encountered and solutions found What you learnt Ongoing evaluation Section 4 - Project Evaluation Completion of criteria to evaluate success Go back to your Criteria to evaluate success developed in Section 3. Apply the criteria to evaluate your finished project in each area (how well has your project met your criteria for success). Impact on Society and the Environment Society Evaluate the possible positive and negative effects of your project on the user and society. You could use a mind map or similar to present your information. Environment Evaluate the possible positive and negative effects of your project on the environment. Your evaluation may include: Consumption of raw materials / resources Utilisation of recycled materials Equipment used / energy consumption Recyclability and obsolescence of final project Life cycle diagram Self-assessment Assess how successful you were in completing the project. Your evaluation may include: Positive experiences Negative experiences Use of time Skills learnt / improved Cost Constraints/problems encountered Feedback How could this project be improved for the next class?
