It is evident that this method of working produces efficiencies, enables cost effective life cycle solutions and drives exceptional contract performance. COMPOSITE PAVEMENTS Our National Composite Pavement Team has been working closely with clients to build a portfolio of composite solutions for use in heavily trafficked areas and where there are time restrictions. Our composite solutions include, but are not limited to, cement bound granular mixture (CBGM) and roller compacted concrete (RCC): CEMENT BOUND GRANULAR MIXTURE (CBGM) CBGM is used to replace the lower base layer of a pavement and has proven capability in meeting all criteria for compaction, level control and pavement stiffness. ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE (RCC) RCC solution can be applied to areas that require heavy point loading and trafficking. This is a low maintenance concrete with increased longevity. RCC is a dry mix that achieves the same strength as conventional concrete. Due to its density and compaction, RCC can achieve sufficient load carrying capacity within a 24 hour curing period. SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS Our sustainability, quality, performance and research teams are constantly channelling their energies into developing new innovative sustainable solutions to reduce our carbon footprint as a business and assist our customers. We operate one of the largest and most dynamic highways contracting businesses, dedicated to successful delivery of our customers needs. 6 10 CONTRACTING SERVICES CONTRACTING SERVICES 11 SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS RESPONSIBLE IN EVERYTHING WE DO We are a founding member of the UK Green Building Council and we were the first company to be accredited to BRE BES6001 standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Materials. We assess the sustainable considerations of each project from the outlook. Our company-wide target is to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 20% by 2016 against a base year of SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS With unrivalled access to the highest quality raw materials, concrete technology and research teams, we are constantly channelling our energies into developing new and sustainable innovative solutions such as: FOAMIX The environmentally preferable alternative to hot mix asphalt The original foamed bitumen asphalt product - equal in engineering, but environmentally preferable to traditional hot mix asphalt. Over 90% of the constituents of Foamix are recycled, and the product can be engineered to meet customer requirements using a wider range of recycled and secondary products, industrial by-products and recycled waste; thereby reducing the need for landfill and saving valuable natural resources. A low energy mixing process is used, as heating of the aggregates is not required. This results in significant energy savings and the product has a low density, giving up to a 10% reduction in the material required. Foamix is currently being used in Sheffield on the PFI contract, in Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, London Borough of Croydon amongst others and we are continuously trialling it on further projects. NON TIPPING TRUCKS (NTTS) We introduced NTTs in early 2013 to overcome issues associated with laying asphalt in enclosed environments such as tunnels (for example the Kingsway Tunnel) and built up and rural areas (such as Surrey and Sussex County) and to assist us in achieving targets for reductions in CO 2 emissions. In 2014 we procured 11 NTTs units and by the end of 2015 we will have a further 14 for use nationally. With a 27% greater carrying capacity than a standard eight wheeled vehicle, NTTs reduce CO 2 emissions on every journey and every project we work on. The branding 'Life' has been assigned to clearly identify our sustainable products and services. This is the first time a construction supplier has gathered together all its sustainable products and solutions under one simple and understandable brand. Our unique Life range is powerful in its substance, offering sustainable solutions across a wide range of construction materials with solid, valuable and clearly identified sustainable benefits.
