6 Classification of adhesives for ceramic tiles and natural stones Strength classification The characteristics of tile adhesives are defined in Standard EN Since April 2004 it is no longer allowed to sell and use a tile adhesive in Europe that has not been tested according to this standard and the demands for CE-marking. Characteristics applicable must be mentioned on every packaging. Specifications Three different types of adhesives are determined: cementitious- C, dispersion- D and Reaction Resin R adhesives. For every type fundamental- and optional characteristics are described. Cement based adhesives A cement based adhesive that only fulfils the fundamental characteristics is classified as a C1 adhesive. Minimum requirements of adhesion strength results must be 0.5 N/mm². The fundamental tests involve: Initial tensile adhesion strength after 28 days dry storage. Tensile adhesion strength after 7 days dry storage and 21 days water immersion. Tensile adhesion strength after 25 freeze-thaw cycles. Tensile adhesion strength after 14 days dry storage and 14 days heat ageing at 70 C. Open time: tensile adhesion strength after 20 minutes installation and 28 days storage. Additional characteristics In order to be classified as a C2 adhesive, additional adhesion strength requirements of 1 N/mm² must be achieved. Optional characteristics An adhesive can also be classified for some special characteristics. These involve: F (fast setting) early tensile adhesion strength of 0.5 N/mm² after 6 hours. T (Tixotropic) slip test; slip of test tile must be 0.5 mm. E (extended open time); tensile adhesion strength after at least 30 minutes open time and 28 days storage. Ready-mixed adhesives A ready-mixed dispersion based adhesive must fulfil the legal European basic requirements. A D1 classified ready-mixed adhesive must have following fundamental characteristics: Initial shear adhesion strength of 1 N/mm² after 14 days dry storage. Shear adhesion strength of 1 N/mm² after heat ageing at 70 C and 24 hours cool down. Open time: tensile adhesion strength of 0.5 N/mm² after 20 minutes installation and 28 days storage. Additional characteristics A D2 classified ready-mixed adhesive also fulfils the additional characteristics: Adhesion strength of 0.5 N/mm² after 7 days dry storage and 7 days water immersion. Adhesion strength of 1 N/mm² at elevated temperature of 70 C and direct measurement. Optional characteristics For ready-mixed adhesives, some special characteristics can be measured: T (Tixotropic) slip test; slip of 200 g/100cm² test tile must be 0.5 mm. E (extended open time); tensile adhesion strength of 0.5 N/mm² after at least 30 minutes open time and 28 days storage. On the job, circumstances can have a negative influence on the adhesion of the adhesive. For this purpose we choose to test our products under extreme circumstances and to aim at development criteria far above the standard requirements. 6

Application: Cement mortar for fixing of large floor tiles, especially for floor tiles with a moisture-absorption capacity < 1%, into the mortar for extra bonding and a full contact between tile and mortar bed. Tile adhesive for fixing large floor tiles on fresh cement screeds. Adhesion improving additive for mortars on critical subfloors. Suitable for in- and outdoor use. 691 TILE ADHESIVE Cement-based tile adhesive for wall and floor tiles on dimensionally stable subfloors. Application: For fixing wall and floor tiles, mosaic and flat natural stone on dimensionally stable subfloors, wall tiles on uneven walls, non-absorbing tiles on non-absorbing walls. 12 Classification of tile grouts EN Besides an European standard for tile adhesives, also the EN standard for tile grouts is applicable. In this standard a number of fundamental and additional characteristics for cement- and epoxy based tiles grouts are mentioned. Fundamental characteristics Tile grouts are defined in different types: cementitious grouts (CG) and reaction resin grouts (RG). In order to mention a certain classification, cementitious grout must fulfil the fundamental characteristics (CG1) or additional characteristics (CG2) after several prescribed tests. CG1 fundamental characteristics Abrasion resistance of 2,000 mm³. Flexural strength after dry storage 2.5 N/mm². Flexural strength after freeze-thaw cycles 2.5 N/mm². Compressive strength after dry storage 15 N/mm². Compressive strength after freeze-thaw cycles 15 N/mm². Shrinkage 3 mm/m¹. Water absorption after 30 minutes 5 g. Water absorption after 240 minutes 10 g. Additional characteristics There are a number of additional characteristics applicable for a CG2 tile grout; High abrasion resistance(ar) 1,000 mm³ Reduced water absorption (W) after: 30 minutes 2 g. Reduced water absorption (W) after: 240 minutes 5 g. These are mainly applicable for (cementitious) tile grouts with a high synthetic binder content. Therefore a better water tightness and good adhesion to the sides of the tiles can be obtained. These tile grouts are often used where high demands are required e.g. bathrooms, terraces or swimming pools. Application: For grouting mosaic, ceramic wall and floor tiles from a joint width of 2 to max. 10 mm, on all rigid surfaces, such as concrete, sand-lime bricks, cellular concrete, gypsum-related surfaces etc. Suitable for indoor use. Colours: grey, white, jasmin, crème, beige, brown, silver-grey, manhattan-grey and anthracite. Box of 10x2.5 kg. 706 EURO GROUT SPECIAL WT Flexible and water-resistant grout for ceramic tiles. Application: Multi-purpose grouting material with a fast drying capacity for the flexible and water-resistant grouting of ceramic wall and floor tiles, as well as natural stone and glass mosaic on almost all surfaces, e.g. wood, sheet materials, gypsum-related surfaces etc. Suitable for in- and outdoor use. Joint width from 2 to max. 10 mm. Colours: white, grey, silver-grey, manhattan-grey, anthracite, beige, jasmin and buxy. Box of 5x5 kg. 716 EURODUR HP Cement-based grouting cement with high abrasion and chemical resistance. Application: For jointing ceramic wall and floor tiles, dark coloured natural stone and mosaics where high demands towards the wear and chemical resistance are required. In a joint width of 2 to 10 mm, on almost all stony and gypsum-based subfloors as well as sheet material. Applicable in extreme wet areas, professional kitchens, swimming pools, various industrial applications as well as on balconies and terraces. Resistant against high pressure purification up to 100 bar. Suitable for underfloor heating systems. Colours: grey, silver-grey. 717 EUROFINE WT Multi-purpose, flexible and watertight grouting cement. Application: For jointing ceramic wall and floor tiles as well as natural stone and glass mosaics in a joint width of maximum 10 mm, on almost all solid constructions, e.g. cement- and gypsum-based subfloors, sheet material, floor and wall heating constructions. Also suitable for the watertight sealing of tile work and as a water-seal in swimming pools. Suitable for in- and outdoor use. Colour: grey 5.5 kg box. 703 SPOUT EPOXY Two-component epoxy-based grout and adhesive. Application: For the acid- and heat-resistant installation and grouting of ceramic wall and floor tiles on industrial floors, swimming pools, terraces, balconies etc. Max. joint width 15 mm. Application: For levelling and repairing of cement-based and other stony walls, e.g. concrete, cellular concrete, lime sand stone etc. Layer thickness 2 to 50 mm, on which tiles have to be fixed. Suitable for indoor use. VLOER Approx. 1.2 kg/m² per mm layer thickness. FLOOR 920 EUROPLAN ALPHY Anhydrite levelling compound. Application: Self-smoothing, tension-free hardening levelling compound for stony subfloors, especially anhydrite-based subfloors, on which e.g. ceramic tiles or natural stone have to be fixed. Layer thickness: min. 2 to max. 30 mm. Suitable for indoor use. Approx. 1.5 kg/m² per mm layer thickness. 922 EUROPLAN FLASH Fast setting cement for making sand/cement screeds. Application: For making fast setting sand/cement screeds. After 1 day ready for fixing floor tiles.
