AT IMERYS, INNOVATION AND CUSTOMER COLLABORATION IS TAKING MINERAL BASED SOLUTIONS TO NEW END APPLICATIONS WITHIN THE PACKAGING INDUSTRY.

3 CORE BENEFITS Our dialogue and collaboration with different companies in the packaging value chain has repeatedly revealed and confirmed that some of the most significant trends in packaging materials are concerned with efficiency, energy saving, light weighting and use of renewable resources. Beyond process gains and legislative requirements, these factors also form the basis for marketing differentiation for brand owners & retailers to gain the attention of end consumers at point of sale. Imerys Packaging Portfolio consists of mineral-based solutions that are developed to specifically address these concerns in the packaging industry by providing 5 core benefits, namely, Protection, Appearance, Cost Reduction, Productivity and Environmental. 1/. PROTECTION Imerys Packaging Portfolio includes a range of fully formulated, ready-for-use, water-based coating solutions for fibre-based packaging industry both for food and non-food segments. Our coatings enhance the surface and functional quality of paper & board based packaging. Key application areas covered by our product portfolio are Moisture Vapour barrier, Oil & Grease barrier, Water barrier and Mineral Oil barrier. The portfolio also covers coating formulations for printability of corrugated board (precoat primers and white coatings). In addition to a portfolio of ready-to-use coating solutions, we re also able to fine-tune our coatings to find the optimum combination of oleophobicity, hydrophobicity, moisture vapour barrier, printability, stiffness, opacity, machine runnability and economics in our formulation to match your specific requirements! Our custom-made coatings ensure optimized performance. Our technical experts can guide you in the choice of formulation and its application method. Our coatings can be applied by conventional dispersion coating techniques, or alternatively, via a printing press. They are easy to handle, and safe to apply. CORE BENEFITS OF IMERYS PACKAGING PORTFOLIO ARE PROTECTION, APPEARANCE, COST REDUCTION, PRODUCTIVITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL. Imerys is closely collaborating with leading brand owners and packaging converters in developing ground-breaking barrier coating solutions. Our barrier coating solution to eliminate migration of printing ink residues from recycled board to packaged food is a case in point where our initiatives for industry collaboration and our innovation combine to produce high value-adding solutions. 4 2/. COST REDUCTION From virgin fibre to Old Corrugated Containers, from latex for barrier coating to opacifiers like TiO 2 raw materials are a source of increasing and volatile costs for players in the packaging value chain. Imerys Packaging Portfolio includes mineral-based solutions for pre-coat and top coat that have allowed our customers to reduce both raw material and process costs. Our capabilities for pigment shape engineering have allowed us to develop blends that effectively combine platy and blocky pigment particles to deliver uniquely enhanced coverage of the board which in turn translates into cost savings for board producer in terms of reduced TiO 2 usage, reduced fibre usage, and also reduced calendar loading. Our E-type Solutions are perfect examples of blends that harness the true potential of mineral usage in pre and top coat formulations to deliver on cost savings. Intensity of use of Imerys mineral-based solutions in coating formulations can reach upto 12% for recycled board and 19% for virgin boxboard. 3/. APPEARANCE High premium is placed by brand owners and retailers on packaging that can effectively communicate the brand image and positioning of their products to the end consumer. For board producers and converters of packaging, this translates into carefully developing, selecting and adapting packaging grade board that can meet highly demanding printing specifications during the printing and converting process. High levels of micro and macro level smoothness of the packaging board surface is mandatory for high quality print, especially so in rotogravure printing. Beyond the appearance of finished product, properties of the top surface are also paramount to withstand demanding packaging converting operations. Important issues are the pore structure of the surface which will impact penetration of printing inks but also penetration of other functional substances such as glue and varnish. The surface also has to be designed with respect to mechanical properties, so that when deformation occurs during folding, creasing and flexing, the failure occurs in the correct location and the appearance of the product is not impaired by unsightly cracking at the fold. The surface chemistry of this top layer must also be suitable to prevent delamination and failure at the interface if the product is going to be laminated. In light of these technical challenges, Imerys has developed high performance coating formulations that allow to meet stringent quality requirements in terms of printability, smoothness, gloss, brightness and opacity; and also allows to meet functional requirements in terms of barrier, varnishability, glueability, and strength for packaging grade paper and board. Within the corrugated packaging segment, high standards of printability requirements is still a niche but a growing sub segment, thanks mostly to the growth in demand for retail ready packaging.this demand is also driving the need to have improved appearance of the corrugated board substrate in terms of its whiteness. Single or double coated systems of Imerys water-based formulations can achieve a smooth, white surface that can be then be treated with wax if required. These coatings are often applied using conventional dispersion coating equipment at the substrate producer or via offline coaters at the converters. Whereas flexographic printers can be used to apply coatings that provide gloss effect on the corrugated packaging or provide functional properties like anti-skid or scratch resistance.

5 4/. PRODUCTIVITY Imerys Packaging Portfolio includes paper making solutions that have a direct impact on improving plant productivity. A case in point is LinerMAX TM. Improved dewatering, reduced drying time requirement and reduced energy demands for drying are some of the benefits of LinerMAX TM. Another example of a solution from Imerys Packaging Portfolio having a direct impact on improving plant productivity is our talc based solution - Mistron -for pitch and stickies control. The solution attracts pitch and stickies onto its platelets, making them harmless and preventing them from agglomerating. Moreover, the solution allows to neutralize the tacky nature of the contaminant. Thus productivity improvements follow as felt and wire blocking problems and also deposits on pressing and drying cylinders are eliminated. Our technical services team can provide you with expert advice and guidance on how our mineral solutions can play a direct role in improving your plant productivity. 5/. ENVIRONMENT Fibre-based packaging is the only packaging material which is bio-based, is recyclable, is based on renewable resources, and also, widely perceived by end users of packaging material as the green solution. However, for overcoming the limitations in terms of barrier properties of fibre-based materials (sensitivity to water, moisture, grease ), the primary solutions used by the packaging industry have so far revolved around fluorochemical treatments, wax coating, poly coating, chrome stearate, etc. Other than being a source of increased and volatile costs, often such barrier treatments also render the packaging difficult to recycle. Uses of Imerys formulated coating solutions provide a more environmentally-friendly alternative as such barrier coatings do not impact the recyclability of the product and are neutral to compostability. AS A GROUP, IMERYS HAS ADOPTED A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT APPROACH THAT ENCOMPASSES SOUND ETHICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL POLICIES IN ALL ITS MINING OPERATIONS. Mineral extenders from our Packaging Portfolio reduce the energy required to repulp packaging material, thereby making it easy to recycle. The efficiency of flotation methods for separating the pulp from unwanted materials is also increased by the presence of our mineral-based solutions. It is important to note that as a leading provider of mineral based solutions to the global paper & packaging industry, Imerys has adopted a Sustainable Development approach at the corporate level that encompasses sound ethical, environmental and social policies in all its mining operations. Since 2006, Imerys has been part of the FTSE4Good responsible investing index and ASPI Eurozone (Advanced Sustainable Performances Indices).
