2 (Page 2 of 7) 21. General Architectural Description The residence at 414 Laurel Street in Steamboat Springs consists of an original 1.5 story, rectangular-shaped, front-gabled dwelling, with a gabled addition built onto the original south (side) elevation. The original front-gabled portion of the dwelling measures 24' N-S (across) by 28' E-W (deep), while the addition (which was constructed in 1976), measures 16' N-S by 14' E-W. The dwelling is supported by a low poured concrete foundation, with only a crawl space under the main level. The exterior walls are, for the most part, clad with painted pale blue horizontal wood siding, with painted dark blue 1" by 6" corner boards; however, much of the original house is clad with painted pale blue square-cut wood shingle siding. The original front gabled roof, and the intersecting gable roof over the addition, are both covered with blue metal roofing material, and the rafter ends are exposed beneath the eaves. There are no chimneys. All of the home's windows feature painted dark blue wood surrounds, and they appear in a variety of patterns, including, 8-light casements, single and paired 4/ 1 double-hung sashes, 1/ 1 double-hung sashes, 4x4 horizontal sliders, and 12-light hoppers or fixed-panes. A 4' by 3' two-step concrete stoop is located on the facade (west elevation). A painted dark blue wood-paneled door, with twelve upper sash lights, and covered by a white metal storm door, leads from the porch into the front of the house. There are two secondary entrances: a painted blue solid wood door enters the house from a brick-paved patio near the north end of the east elevation; a 1x1 horizontal sliding glass bypass door enters the addition near the south end of the east elevation. A large, 15' by 11' elevated wood deck extends across the east (rear) elevation. 22. Architectural style / building type: No Style 23. Landscape or setting special features: This house is located on the east side of Laurel Street, near the point where Laurel and 6th Streets merge, in Old Town Steamboat Springs' historic residential neighborhood. A garage and small secondary residence are located behind the main dwelling, to the east. An alley parallels the property's north side, while a small planted grass lawn, with mature landscaping, is to the west and south of the house. The small front yard is dominated by a large fir or spruce tree. Butcher Knife Creek flows through the property from the northeast to the southwest. 24. Associated buildings, features, or objects Secondary Residence A wood frame secondary residence is located east of the house. This 1.5 story building measures 13' N-S by 20' E-W, and has painted blue horizontal weatherboard exterior siding, with painted dark blue 1" by 4" corner boards. The secondary residence is covered by a side gable roof, covered with corrugated metal roofing material, laid over 1x wood decking and 2x wood rafters. The rafter ends, which are painted dark blue, are exposed beneath the eaves. A brick chimney penetrates the south-facing roof slope. Windows are primarily single 4-light hoppers, with painted dark blue wood surrounds. A wood-paneled entry door leads into the residence from a shed-roofed porch on the south elevation. Garage A wood frame garage is located a short distance southeast of the main house. The garage measures 24' N-S by 20' E-W, is supported by a low concrete foundation, and has painted pale blue square-cut wood shingle exterior siding with painted dark blue 1" by 4" corner boards. (The garage's south wall is clad with horizontal weatherboard siding, however.) The garage roof is a moderately-pitched front gable, covered with corrugated metal roofing material laid over 1x wood decking and 2x wood rafters. Single 1x1 horizontal sliding windows penetrate the garage on its east and west elevations. A vertical wood plank, horizontal sliding, garage door is located on the garage's north elevation, opening onto a gravel driveway which extends to the alley to the north.

Site type(s):residence 35. Historical Background Routt County Assessor records indicate that the main dwelling on this property was built in 1914, and that the small secondary dwelling was constructed in Information about the people who lived and owned here prior to the 1950s has not been uncovered. By the mid-1950s, though, this was the home of Delbert and Gladys Bostock, who may have owned and lived here for many years prior to that time. The Bostocks sold the property to Curtis Weiss sometime in the 1960s or early 1970s. Weiss added the gabled addition, and otherwise remodeled the property, before selling it to Robert Moore, in September Mr. Moore, who currently owns the apartment building next door at 420 Laurel Street, deeded this property to Brent Libby, its current owner, in September Mr. Libby works as a pharmacist at City Market in Steamboat Springs. The small secondary dwelling has apparently served as a rental house throughout most of its history. 36. Area(s) of Significance: 40. Period of Significance: 41. Level of Significance: National: State: Local: xx 42. Statement of Significance This property is historically significant for its association with the themes of residential growth and community development in Steamboat Springs, from the time of its construction, circa 1914, through the middle of the twentieth century. The two houses and garage are also architecturally significant for their unstylized wood-frame, gable-roofed, architectural plans. Nonetheless, the property's level of significance is probably not to the extent that it would qualify individually for inclusion in the National or State Registers of Historic Places. 43. Assessment of historic physical integrity related to significance: This building exhibits a reasonably high level of integrity, relative to the seven aspects of integrity defined by the National Park Service and the Colorado Historical Society - location, setting, design, workmanship, materials, feeling and association. The main dwelling's physical integrity has been compromised by a 1976 addition; however, the addition is quite well executed, and generally complements the building's original construction.
