IMPORTANCE OF HAND PROTECTION The hand is one of the most complex body parts and contains a clever network of nerves and tendons that allow us to perform from the most banal to highly complicated motor operations. During day-to-day operations all parts of the hand are exposed to risks such as sharp objects, heat, chemicals, etc. Without your hands it would be extremely difficult to do routine tasks, such as tying your shoes, driving, typing, using a fork or opening doors. Your hands are what makes you a skilled and valuable worker. Most accidents with hands-on injury occur in the workplace. Without adequate protection, both minor and major injuries can have a serious impact on both the professional and social level. Attention to the various hazards in the workplace and the provision of the appropriate gloves for the various applications, minimize the risks. The selection of the right gloves ensures effective protection and unambiguous performance of the work. Protecting your hands at work also ensures the continued execution of things that are important outside of the work environment. 4

EN 388:2003 STANDARD The EN 388:2003 is the European standard governing gloves that provide protection against mechanical risks. This standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, tearing, blade cut and puncture. It is mandatory for all safety glove manufacturers to meet the requirements, which include clear marking rules, appropriate testing methods and ensuring correct information is supplied. The most frequent occupational hand injuries are caused by cuts and abrasions. The EN 388:2003 Standard allows you to understand what level of protection a glove has by requiring gloves to be scored on a scale where there are four numbers listed which indicate the level of resistance to blade cut, puncture, tearing and abrasion. Blade cut resistance is scored on a scale of 1 to 5. Abrasion resistance, tear resistance and puncture resistance are scored on a scale of 1 to 4. Depending on the fibers, materials, knitting and coating used, test results will vary. The diagram below outlines which number in the Standard corresponds to which hazard. EN388 COUP TEST PERFORMANCE LEVELS AVERAGE CUT INDEX 0 < > 19.9 EN388:2003 Coup Test Method for measuring cut resistance measures the number of cycles (forwards and backwards) to completely cut through a sample with a low pressure (5N / approximately 500g). The cut resistance of the sample (average over multiple tests) is compared to the resistance of a reference cotton fabric (average over multiple tests). The ratio between these two tests determines a Cut Index which is used to assign a cut level between 0-5, 5 indicating the highest level of resistance. PUNCTURE RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standard sized point TEAR RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the amount of force required to tear the glove fabric CUT RESISTANCE (1 5) Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the glove fabric at a constant speed. FIXED LOAD 500 gr / 5N ROTATING BLADE opposite to linear movement LINEAR MOVEMENT back and forth, opposite to rotating movement FABRIC SAMPLE SAMPLE HOLDER ABRASION RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the number of cycles required to make a hole in the glove fabric. The higher the number, the better the glove. 5

EN 388:2016 LEVELS CUT RESISTANCE nuisance cuts: paper cuts, automotive maintenance, parts assembly and material handling low cut hazards: construction, automotive assembly, packaging and some masonry applications moderate cut hazards: lightmetal stamping, light-duty glass handling applications high cut hazards: metal stamping, steel metal handling and glass handling extreme cut hazards: heavy metal stamping, plate glass handling and some pulp & paper applications The key change in the EN 388:2016 standard is the formal inclusion of the ISO cut test method which was included to properly test gloves with a high level of cut resistance made from materials (i.e. glass fibers, steel fibers or Dyneema) that have a blunting effect on the blades currently used for the EN388:2003 cut tests (aka the Coup Test Method). The blunting of the blades when testing these fibers resulted in unreliable cut scores and demanded the need of a new test method. The ISO test is designed to better simulate an accidental cut with a sharp object, so the glove ratings achieved with this test is more indicative of real-life situations. These standards are not specific to everyone s needs and should be seen as a general recommendation. You should always make sure your selected glove complies with the mandated safety standard recommended for your application. CUT RESISTANCE BY MATERIAL 5 3 Metal mesh Engineered yarns (Kevlar Steel, Dyneema, Fiberglass) High performance materials (Kevlar, Dyneema) Synthetics (polyester, nylon) The ISO cut test is also known as the TDM-100 Test as it makes use of a TDM machine with a sliding blade and weights. The ISO cut resistance test indicates how much force is needed to cut through a fabric. The test is conducted by placing a glove on a curved surface under a straight blade which moves back and forth. Pressure is then applied from below the curved surface to subjected the glove to great force in a single contact with the blade to ascertain the weight required to break through the material. After repeating this five times with three different pressure weights and new blades, the value determining the Cut Level will be the value required for the blade to cut through the material after traveling 20mm. 1 Cotton Leather Latex INDEPENDENT TESTING All THORMASAFE Gloves are subjected to EN388 testing in CTG approved and registered laboratories. You can see the performance results for each test shown under the EN388 logo printed on the top side of each glove. VARIABLE LOAD BLADE travels back and forth FABRIC SAMPLE SAMPLE HOLDER The result is displayed in Newtons (N). The test product is assigned a cut protection class on the basis of this Newton value. Each Newton value is assigned a letter from A-F depending on the weight required to break through the material. 6

CUT ISO RATING EN 388 RATING NEWTON GRAMS A B ,019 C ,020-1,529 D ,530-2,242 E ,243-3,058 F 30+ 3,059+ Based on the test results, you can graph the ratio of load applied to the cutting knife and the distance it has travelled when it cuts through the sample. The Newton weight required to do this, determines the cut level in the EN388:2016 standard. NORMALISED STROKE/MM DP IMPACT RESISTANCE (P,F,X,) The transmitted force of a predefined weight of 2.5kg with an impact energy of 5 J onto the glove. TDM CUT RESISTANCE (A-F) The force required to make a cut through at 20mm travel distance with a razor-sharp blade. PUNCTURE RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standard sized point TEAR RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the amount of force required to tear the glove fabric ,0 9,0 10,0 11,0 12,0 13,0 14,0 15,0 16,0 17,0 18,0 FORCE (N) The EN388:2016 also includes an impact protection test (EN 13594: 2015). This test determines if a glove has sufficient impact protection by isolating the area with explicit impact protection (usually backhand and knuckles) and impacting it with an impact energy of 5J (1.7kg). Impact protection is rated as follows: (P) Pass, (F) Fail, (X) Not Tested. Gloves not offering impact protection are not subjected to testing. CUT COUP TEST (1 5) Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the glove fabric at a constant speed. Not applicable if glove material (i.e. glass fibers, steel fibers or Dyneema) has a blunting effect on the blades. ABRASION RESISTANCE (1 4) Based on the number of cycles required to make a hole in the glove fabric. The higher the number, the better the glove resistance. BY JANUARY 1, 2018, ALL THORMASAFE GLOVES WILL CONFORM TO THE NEW EN388:2016 STANDARD. It is important to note, however, that where the material of a glove does not have a blunting effect on the blade, the Coup Test remains the reference test as this test has been made more reliable with improved control of the blade. Regardless, the level of performance according to the ISO test may still be reported. The pictogram below demonstrates how the new certification standards will look on each glove. 7

QUESTIONS ABOUT EN WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? This new standard will not be applied retrospectively as is the norm with any new PPE standard, so you can continue to use the gloves carrying the old standard. A key benefit of the new standard, however, is that products with higher levels of protection will more easily be identified. 2 WON T USING 2 DIFFERENT CUT METHODS CONFUSE PEOPLE? The new standard allows for both the Coup and TDM tests to be quoted, but where the ISO cut score is noted this will be used for certification. 4 WHEN WILL THE NEW STANDARDS GO INTO AFFECT? The new standards will officially apply from April 2018, but manufacturers will have 5 years to fully transition into the new standard for all gloves produced. 5 ARE THE ABRASION, TEAR AND PUNCTURE TESTS AFFECTED? No, these tests are not affected. 3 HOW DOES THE NEW STANDARDS RELATE TO THE EN388:2003 CUT STANDARD RATING? It s too early to create direct links, but under the EN388:2016 standard, there is more information to allow you to select the right glove for you and your application. According to cut technology innovators like DSM Dyneema, the cut-resistant market will roughly fall into the following segments according to cut performance: A multipurpose gloves; B/C most common applications in industries requiring medium cut resistance (metal and glass processing for example); D gloves suitable for applications where high cut resistance is required; E/F very specific, very high risk and high exposure applications (in the meat processing industry for example) that demand ultra-high cut resistance. 8

TYPES OF GLOVE COATING WHICH COATING IS BEST FOR YOU? NITRILE PALM-COATED GLOVES Excellent punctures and tear resistance (3x more than rubber) Stands up well to oil Perform well in a range of temperatures between -4 C (25 F) and 149 C (300 F), however it is not flame-resistant Can be foamed to behave like a sponge, so that when it is in contact with smooth, oily surfaces, oil on the surface is soaked up, displaced and grip is improved considerably POLYURETHANE-COATED WORK GLOVES Great stretch, strength, softness and low particulate shed Non-allergenic properties Unique grippy quality without being sticky Abrasion resistance Excellent resistance to solvents, fats, greases, gasoline, oxidation and ozone Poor resistance to hot water and is not recommended for use above 79 C (175 F) NITRILE MICROPORE PALM-COATED GLOVES Same characteristics as the Nitrile, however it has an added foaming process that uses micropore technology to create a bubbled surface that will not allow oil to penetrate to the hand while absorbing it at the same time. Micropore technology infuses nitrile coatings with millions of tiny pores, which displaces oils and liquids when pressed against smooth surfaces. This in turn creates suction that further increases grip.
