25 Access Panel 25

26 Access Panel Access Panels are manufactured to resemble the main ceiling panels both in respect to size and edge detail. They are used in locations where security tiles are employed or where regular access to the ceiling void is necessary for electrical or mechanical services. The panels are manufactured with reinforced frames that provide rigidity to the panel whilst permitting the panel to hinge down for access to the ceiling plenum. Access Panels are fitted with locking devices to retain the panel in the ceiling and prevent unauthorised access. Locks can be operated with a square shanked key (budget locks) or, in particularly sensitive areas such as police stations or prisons, the locks can be key operated (Yale Type). 27 Lay-In 27

28 Lay-In The term Lay-In refers to tiles that have minimal tile face coverage by the supporting exposed grid as distinct from lay-on tiles where the face of the tile is fully visible. Lay-In Tiles are used with an exposed grid table usually 24mm wide although different grid table widths are available. Where Lay-In perforated tiles are required it is recommended that the supported edges of the tile are perforated and the unsupported edges (usually the long sides) have plain borders. This arrangement provides the appearance of a plain border edged tiled ceiling with the exposed table grid providing the border on the supported edges. The grid is supported by GT114 hangers at 1200mm maximum centres in both directions. up to 1.00* w Up to Class A* NRC up to * EDGE DETAILS D nfw /D ncw 26-42dB A2-s1, d0 (BS EN ) Module Size 600 x x 600 Grid Width Please contact technical sales for further information SIZES AVAILABLE Circa 7.2kg/m² 38 None without additional measures Dust or vacuum with clean soft brush Wipe with clean damp sponge 24 Tiles are demountable Recyclable Warranty available *Performance is dependent on perforation 28 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 37 Mesh Ceilings 37

38 Mesh Ceilings The Burgess By System range of Mesh Ceilings will provide a rustic and industrial look to compliment your interior designs. Choose from an almost infinite number of styles, hole sizes, sheet thicknesses and colour finishes to create a truly stunning metal ceiling system. WHAT MAKES MESH UNIQUE? Traditional Expanded Metal Mesh is basically a sheet of metal with diamond shaped holes. The holes are produced by using an expanding machine, which uses a pressured slitting and stretching process to transform solid metal sheets and coils into beautifully finished, expanded metal mesh. THE PRODUCTION PROCESS STEP 1 Sheets or coils of metal are fed into the expanding machine. Due to the decorative patterns being created by the slits and stretching, there is zero waste generated. The process for expanding metal was first patented in Hartlepool, UK in the 1880 s and despite the amount of time which has elapsed since then, the process remains true to the original idea. The process is simple but incredibly effective... STEP 2 Each machine is fitted with a unique knife, designed to create a particular pattern. Unlimited patterns, to exactlly match your design STEP 3 The machines are then programmed or manually controlled to expand the metal to exact specification. STEP 4 Using the unique shearing and stretching process means very little waste is created. The metal is sheared and then stretched in a single process creating the apertures and therefore expanding the metal. The mesh is then formed into one of our many ceiling systems and finished with our factory applied polyester powder coating. 43 Bespoke Designs Expanded Mesh can be supplied in a variety of finishes, thickness, raised or flattened. Flattened is smoother and does not indent soft material, however it is not as strong as the more robust raised mesh. Powder coating in your choice of colour will enhance its aesthetic appearance and add to its corrosion resistance as would plastic coating. Patterns & Shapes In addition to the traditional diamond shaped range of meshes, the expanding metal process can produce a dynamic variety of designs. Features and Benefits Expanded Metal Mesh has a diverse range of properties, which makes it so versatile and appealing, here are some of the key strengths of expanded metal mesh: Highly efficient conductor Electricity, magnetic flux and heat can all flow through expanded metal mesh, as there is a continuous connection throughout each sheet. There are no breaks or welds because the mesh has been formed from a single piece of metal. The mesh is formed from a single piece of metal Which means that there is nothing to work loose, no fretting strands or strained joins or welds. This makes expanded mesh ideal for forming and beneficial to further processing such as pressing and shearing. Higher strengthto weight ratio than sheet metal By expanding metal from its solid sheet form, additional strength is added. The uncut knuckles of expanded mesh withstand stress better than welds or joints. The process is not wasteful of material The expanding process involves slitting and stretching the metal to create holes, which means there is no waste. This provides you with direct cost savings, compared to other methods eg: perforating metals (punching out the holes), the holes are treated as waste and will incur extra cost to you. 43 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 202 technical overview In most cases suspended ceilings provide the designer with an opportunity to create an aesthetic solution as well as incorporate key performance characteristics in the design of the room. This can ensure the space not only looks good but also provides a safe and suitable environment for applications ranging from schools and colleges to hospitals, clinics, clean rooms and laboratories through to offices and retail outlets. LIGHT REFLECTANCE The level of reflectance from surfaces in a room is strongly influenced by their colour and sheen. Bright white surfaces with high levels of light reflectance can reduce the amount of artificial light required in a room as well as the energy bill. ACOUSTICS Depending on the surface design and their construction (metal, mineral or soft fibre) suspended ceiling can provide very low or very high levels of sound absorption and as room to room airborne sound reduction. ENVIRONMENT Some of the important qualities required by environmental accreditation schemes such as BREEAM and LEED are the low emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC s) such as formaldehyde and the recyclability of products. HYGIENE Important in clinical and food production hygiene a products ability to resist fungal and bacterial growth can be a critical factor in the specification process. Burgess By System have products that are designed for such applications. FIRE Fire performance is broken down into Reaction to Fire which tests the materials fire qualities by assessing its contribution to the propagation and spread of a fire as well as the production of smoke and flaming droplet. The second is the level of Structural Fire Resistance that can be achieved when a ceiling is installed under a specific type of floor construction. HUMIDITY RESISTANCE The level of relative humidity (RH %) that a ceiling tile can endure before deflection occurs. QUALITY MANAGEMENT IS Quality Management Systems and ISO Environmental Management systems STANDARDS Products are manufactured in accordance with the European Standard for Suspended Ceilings BS EN13964: 2014 Suspended Ceilings Requirements and test methods and the recommendations of TAIM, The Association of Industrial Metal CEILING Manufacturers. MAINTENANCE, REDECORATION AND CLEANING. Our suspended ceiling systems can be cleaned and redecorated but care must be taken to prevent any of the key characteristics being compromised. 202 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 203 acoustics The primary purpose of analysing the construction of a room or space is to ensure that it is acoustically suitable for its primary use. ROOM ACOUSTICS This is normally achieved by ensuring the reverberation time and/or speech intelligibility meets the criteria needed for the intended room use. Sound Absorption Coefficient To achieve this, the sound absorption values of the proposed room surfaces can be used by the acoustician to calculate the existing reverberation time of that space. If the result does not meet the required performance alternative surfaces can be introduced into the design before construction begins. It is important to remember that areas can have too much as well as too little absorption. If the balance is not correct, both extremes can make the area uncomfortable and difficult for people to work in. Depending on the material and surface design a suspended ceiling can provide a high level of sound absorption and is generally the most effective surface in a room as it is never obstructed by objects such as desks and chairs. Although we are looking for the correct reverberation time in a room or space the performance of the products are normally expressed as sound absorption coefficients. These show the amount of sound absorbed across a range of specific frequencies and will range from 0.00 to 1 with 0.00 representing total reflection and 1 total absorption. The sound absorption coefficients of all the surfaces in a room are then used to calculate the anticipated reverberation time. Absorption Coefficient Frequency, Hz For ease of product comparison a single figure can be calculated from the product test data (see typical graph above). This is called the Noise Reduction Coeffficient (NRC) if using American ASTM standards or α w if using European standards. The European standards further classifies products into one of following Sound Absorption Classes depending on their α w performance. EUROPEAN SOUND ABSORPTION CLASSES Class A 0.90, 0.95, 1.00, Class B 0.80, 0.85 Class C 0.60, 0.65, 0.75, Class D 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, 0.50, 0.55, Class E 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, Non Classified 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 203

204 RAFTS ISLANDS AND WALL PANELS With the increased use of thermal mass in buildings the use of a propriety suspended ceiling in a space is no longer a practical solution. The creation of individual, high performance ceiling rafts, islands and wall panels allows the introduction of sound absorption in the ceiling plane and vertical surfaces while still providing airflow through the space to make use of the passive cooling and heating design. The added advantage is the ability to combine and strategically place the ceiling rafts, Islands and wall panels to achieve the most effective acoustic design while having the choice in some formats of colour, sizes and shapes. BUILDING ACOUSTICS The construction of the building, the quality of internal partitions and floors along with the placing of noise sources inside and out can have a significant effect on the sound quality of an internal environment. If constructed correctly the inclusion of a suspended ceilings can make a considerable improvement to the quality of most interior environments. Lateral room to room airborne sound reduction can be critical between offices, consulting rooms and any space that needs to be separated acoustically from the adjacent room. The result is measured across a range of frequencies and normally expressed as a single Dnfw figure. It is effectively the reduction created by the sound passing through the ceiling twice, once in each workspace or room. The performance of a partition is tested by generating sound on one side of a chamber divided by the partition under test. The measuring the amount of airborne sound it prevents from passing through it. The resulting reduction is measured over a range of frequencies and normally expressed in db s as single Rw figure. Where transfer of noise or speech between adjacent rooms is critical it is important to match the performance of the ceiling with that of the partition. So if for example there is a requirement for an airborne sound reduction of 35dB between adjacent rooms with a common void the partition should have an Rw rating of 35dB and the ceilings a Dnfw of at least 35dB. It is important to compare like for like when looking at the airborne sound reduction of ceilings and partitions. The Rw performance of a ceiling can be significantly lower than its Dnfw value. Where noise and vibrations are being transmitted through the structure of a building the suspended ceiling can do little to provide any acoustic solution 204 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 205 the environment The environment now forms an integral part of most construction projects and accreditation schemes have grown up around the need to be able to quantify and provide a measurement of the buildings environmental impact. There are a number of well-known accreditation schemes around the world with the UK s BREEAM, USA s LEED and Australia s Greens Star being some of the better known internationally. Most have now expanded their schemes to include refurbishment as well as new build projects in an attempt to promote good practice throughout the industry. In the UK independent refurbishment assessment schemes such as the RICS SKArating have been running for several years. All new build schemes promote key areas such as the efficient use of energy and water and all support the use of products in the construction process that have been manufactured by responsible companies who use sustainable raw materials wherever possible, and provide low emission products that are not injurious to the health and wellbeing of its employees or those people working in the environment where the products have been installed. Some schemes also use criteria such as recycled content, reuse of product or the ability to recycle the product at the end of its life. The European Construction Products Regulation now requires products to be accompanied by a Declaration of Performance which for the ceilings industry means declaring things such as formaldehyde and asbestos content. It has therefore become easier to see if the product selected poses a serious health risk to the working environment. Low level emission of formaldehyde can also help attain credits in most environmental accreditation schemes. We can confirm that none of the range of Burgess By System Ceiling tiles involve the use or addition of formaldehydes in their production process. This enables the products to be classified E1 in accordnace with the EN 13964:2004 standard, as denoted by the CE markings. The investment in international environmental management systems such as ISO and quality management system ISO 9001 also provide good indicators of a company s commitment to such responsibilities. 205

206 our commitment As a company Burgess By System have been manufacturing suspended ceilings for decades and have been able to see the advantages of developing an environmental strategy. PRACTICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS Recycling and reduction of production waste and the efficient use of energy and other resources reduces consumption of raw materials as well as waste to landfill. As well as a social consideration it also provides economic benefits by instilling a healthy discipline within the company which in turn helps keep costs down. The quality of packaging, storage and handling all help to deliver a sound product to site and of course the quality of the product helps to achieve an installation with the minimum of waste. The flexibility and quality of our ceiling systems allows many to be produced in special project sizes that can reduce waste on site as well as installation time. From a sustainability point of view our metal ceiling products probably have one of the highest recycling rates of any construction product. 206 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 207 fire One of the most common requirements is that the material used complies with Class O. This is a requirement of Building Regulations Approved document B and can be complied with by using materials that are either:- Classified as Non-Combustible when tested in accordance with BS476: Part 4 Deemed to be of Limited Combustibility when tested to BS476: Part 11 Achieved a Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame when tested to BS476: Part 7 and achieved a fire propagation index (1) of not more than 12 and a sub-index (i1) of not more than 6 when tested to BS476: Part 6 Reaction to Fire is the term for product classified in accordance with the Harmonised European Norm (hen) EN If tested by an Notified Body the results are valid throughout the European Union and accepted by all member countries. REACTION TO FIRE CLASSIFICATIONS A1 A2 B Non - combustible Limited combustibility No flashover Euroclass performance classifications also include the additional criteria of Smoke and Flaming droplets on most classification below A1 Smoke has three classification S1, S2 and S3 with S1 being the lowest and similarly flaming droplets are classified as d0, d1 and d2. STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE When a suspended ceiling is installed under a structural floor to form a construction it can then be tested to see what degree of fire resistance it is capable of providing. Typically the of insulation. In practice it is important to install the ceiling in accordance with the test report and ensure that any intrusions in to the ceiling plane have a similar level of fire resistance to that of the ceiling. C Flashover occurs after 10 minutes D Flashover occurs between 2 and 10 minutes E F Flashover occurs before 2 minutes No performance determined Products classified in accordance with harmonised European standards of BS EN can be deemed to be Class 0 if they achieve a Reaction to Fire classification of A1, A2 or B. 207

208 MARINE & OFFSHORE METAL CEILINGS Burgess By System offer Clip-in Tile systems for use in both Marine and Offshore installations. Clip-in 600 x 600mm Stainless Steel tiles are available for use in aggressive/high humidity areas such as galleys, together with painted tiles for other areas. FIRE RESISTANCE TESTS - Marine Fire resistance tests for the latest International marine applications have also been completed to IMO A.754(18)/A-30/B15 ceiling standard. This is a very stringent test to ensure the metal Category A certification requires that the suspended ceiling remains integral and that decking temperature above the suspended ceiling does not exceed 180 C. Category B certification requires that the suspended ceiling remains integral and that the temperature of the decking above does not exceed 225 C. These tests are more demanding than their equivalent BS476 requirements, which reflects the importance of the ceiling membrane in the protection of metal decking above the ceiling in marine applications. Burgess By System Clip-in ceilings have achieved A-30, B-15 ratings in accordance with the requirements of this standard. 208 The information provided in this leaflet is based on the standards and product data available at the time of publication. 215 REMOVAL OF CONCEALED METAL CLIP-IN TILES The method of extracting Burgess By System Clip-In and Swingdown tiles using the blade extractor tool (product No. GT137) is as follows:- 1. Establish the direction of the spring tee bar. Where rectangular tiles are used, the tee bar normally runs along the short side of the tile. For square tiles, the spring tee bar generally runs lengthways down the room. 2. Insert the blade extractor at a slight angle between the tile joints, approximately 50mm from the tile corner, with the hook of the blade facing the tile to be removed. 3. Push in the blade until it touches the top of the spring tee section. Move the handle to the vertical position. You should hear the hook click over the 4. Pivot the blade against the top of the tee section by moving the handle to an angle and the tile should start to come out. Do not pull blade directly down. A 5 or 6mm movement will free the pip from the bulb of the tee. Repeat the process on the parallel corner of the tile. The tile can now be removed in a controlled manner. With longer planks, you may require the assistance of a second person. 5. To replace the tile, offer the edge of the pipped bar. Working at the corners, push the tile into the tee bar until the pip engages into the bulb of the tee. If necessary place a cloth-covered block on the corner and tap home the tile. To avoid cotton gloves be used for the above maintenance operations. A limpet vacuum lifter (GT 135) can be used to remove non-perforated tiles in a similar fashion.» Applicable to all our products 215

216 Installation guide Sequence Rafts, Baffles & Wall Absorbers Burgess By System direct fix plates offer an alternative to a framed wall panel installation. They are made from galvanised steel and enable Sequence Wall Panels or Acoustic Baffles to be mounted onto wall surfaces without any visible fixings. The fixing guidance notes are down the right hand side of the page with the amount of direct fix plates needed shown down the left. Panel Length (mm) Panel Width (mm) Direct Fix Brackets advised Wall Mounting Ensure the plates are securely fixing to the wall surface in the appropriate centres and number. Place the top edge of the panel on the required line and swing the bottom edge to meet the fixing plates. With the panel against the fixing plates, gently push the panel into the wall and ease down onto the fixing plate spikes. Direct fix plates should be at least 100mm in from the edge of the panels once located. Guidance Notes Direct fix panels can be removed by reversing the installation process. If the panels are to be non-removable the above process should be accompanied by a direct bond adhesive being applied to the back of the panels and to the front point of the fixing plate spikes. Please bear in mind that the enclosed guidance is based on panels being applied to smooth, flat surfaces. Any wall undulations will either require additional plates being used or an uneven panel face being seen.
