2 Princeton Elementary School First Grade Summer Packet Information Sheet Dear Parent(s): Helping your child(ren) create a love of reading is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Establishing this habit is a shared responsibility between the home and the school. We want students to become independent lifetime readers. The key is enjoyment. A child who sees reading as a pleasant and relaxing activity is likely to enjoy it. We, the first grade teachers, encourage each child to read every night and use a reading log to record books read during the summer vacation. You must also complete at least 5 book reports. Reading to children at an early age encourages them to want to read on their own. It is important to bring this enthusiasm to 1 st grade if they are to become successful readers! Attached you will find a list of recommended readings for the summer months. These books are intended for your child to read to you, with you or alone. With the reading list you will also find a reading log where you and your child can keep track of the books that he/she has read. In addition to keeping a reading log, each student is asked to choose 5 books on which to complete a report. (1 Dr. Seuss, 1 Clifford, 1 Non-fiction Animal, 1 Counting and 1 Alphabet book) Book report forms are also included in this packet. (Feel free to duplicate any form or the reading log as needed; extra points will be rewarded for additional reports completed.) Along with this packet are included The Seven Habits of Happy Kids, which the Princeton family has adopted and will continue to incorporate. You and your child are asked to continue exercising these habits throughout the summer to have a jumpstart for the upcoming year. Most of the skills included in this packet are skills that your child should be able to complete independently as entering first graders. All work inside this packet is due on or before Friday, August 19, Have a wonderful and safe summer. Be careful and remember to read, read, read!!! Sincerely, Mrs. Givens and Miss Brennan
