The initial cost can be nderstandably misleading de to the majority of diamond blades looking the same the jstification to prchase the more expensive prodcts is difficlt for a cstomer to qantify. As yo wold expect the grade of segments sed directly inflences the lifetime and speed of ct ths providing a better cost per ct ratio on the more expensive prodcts. If yor cstomer has an ongoing reqirement to ct the same prodct they will receive a better retrn from their original investment by opting for the more expensive higher grade diamond blades. Hard Materials / Granite The HMX range of diamond blades have been engineered to ct the hardest of materials sch as granite. Hard materials in man-made strctres tend to be made from clay and kiln fired to temperatres between 900 to 1200 degrees. The manfactring process of many of these prodcts means they are sbjected to high pressre pressing ths making them dense and very hard. Dal Prpose Trbo The DTX range gives the ser the ability to ct a variety of materials within a specific range. These diamond blades offer more versatility when the ser is reglarly ctting hard medim density materials. In addition to the DTX wide application range this prodct also offers otstanding ctting characteristics de to it castellated trbo segment design. General Prpose The GPX range of diamond blades are most sited to ctting man made prodcts constrcted sing sand, cement and aggregate. The GPX range with its medim bond segment prodces better reslts on prodcts that have been compressed nder high pressre to increase their load bearing characteristics. In addition this prodct is designed to deal with the stresses of ctting reinforced concrete prodcts. Tri-Prpose The TPX range have been designed to give the ser the versatility to ct a wider variety of materials withot the need to change diamond blades every time the material being ct changes, these tools offer the ability to ct longer with less down time. Dal Prpose The DPX range gives the ser the ability to ct a variety of materials within a specific range. These diamond blades offer more versatility when the contractor is reglarly ctting medim low density abrasive materials. Abrasive Materials The ABX range of diamond blades are designed for ctting abrasive applications sch as sand stone. A man made abrasive material tends to contain large amonts of sand i.e. concrete roof tiles, soft concrete paviors and concrete blocks bt in addition handmade bricks and facing bricks may also have abrasive properties. Man-made abrasive bilding materials are predominantly mass prodced to a low compressive specification with large air pockets contained within them. Asphalt The ASX range of diamond blades go one step frther in segment hardness compared with the ABX range when ctting abrasive materials. For instance Asphalt, this is a man-made prodct sed for the constrction of road srfaces formed from a mix of crde oil, sand and aggregate. Dependent on how old and how hard the asphalt was rolled (redcing air pockets within) will determine the compressive strength and sbseqently will determine its abrasive characteristics. In addition to asphalt this category of diamond blades can be sed for extreme abrasive applications sch as Green concrete, light weight blocks (3.5-7Kn) and cement screed. 6 7

5 i INTRODUCTION TO DIAMOND BLADES ULTRA HARD MATERIALS The three main components that make p a diamond blade are; Segment, Segment Attachment and Steel Centre. 1. Segment The diamond grit which in many cases tends to be indstrial grade is the ingredient that prodces the ctting edge. The diamond grit is held within a matrix bond comprising of a mixtre of copper, tin, carbon, iron, cobalt, nickel, and graphite amongst others. This is the element that determines the wear rate of the segment and how often the new layer of diamond grit is exposed to the ctting srface. When combined the diamond grit and matrix bond are more commonly known as the segment. Segment Attachment The main processes of attaching a segment to the steel centre are laser welding and sintering. Laser welded prodcts tend to command a higher price de to the increased manfactring costs involved with attaching the segments to the steel centre individally. Sintered prodcts can be prodced in larger batches redcing the manfactring costing per item. 3. Steel Centre The steel centres sed in the manfactre of diamond blades can vary in design and qality dependant on the grade of steel sed. In many cases the steel centre is relatively matched to the estimated segment lifetime. The material application of a diamond blade will determine whether the steel centre reqires cooling holes or nder ctting protection. Some other steel centre featres available are laser scrolling and sandwich centre which are sed for the prpose of redcing resonant noise whilst ctting. As a reslt of the large spectrm of applications a diamond blade is sed for it is inevitable that the lifetime of these prodcts can vary considerably. This is why the most important aspect of choosing the right diamond blade is to establish at the very beginning the application that it will be predominantly sed for as the correct choice early on will provide faster, cleaner and more cost effective reslts. We advise or cstomers to se the application chart on page 6 as this can prove to be a sefl tool in selecting the correct diamond blade for specific applications; it can often be a srprise to many cstomers what constittes a hard material, or an abrasive one! Over recent years wet core drilling has become more accessible to the general contractor de to the introdction of high powered drill motors and drilling rigs at a more affordable price. This introdction has enabled the drilling of more difficlt materials sch as granite, heavily reinforced concrete & Flint aggregate concrete. In addition to more affordable machinery the price of wet drilling consmables has also redced throghot the indstry. Once the powders are mixed they are loaded into molds and ndergo a hot or cold pressing process forming segments. For the best reslts the manfactre of a diamond segment shold match the natre of the material to be drilled as closely as possible. If the material is hard, the bond of the diamond segments shold be softer, as the natre of the diamond segment is to become blnt when ctting hard materials. With a softer bonded segment the blnted diamonds and srronding metal matrix are allowed to be worn away qicker enabling the new sharper diamonds below to be exposed to participate in the drilling. If the material being drilled is relatively soft, the bond shold be harder, as in this case the diamonds remain sharper for longer and reqire release from the matrix a lot slower ths increasing tool longevity. The size, hardness and concentration of diamond grit contained within a core drill segment can also contribte massively to a core drills performance. For example, when the material to be drilled is soft, the diamond contained within the segment shold be of medim grade hardness and large in size. When the material being drilled is of a medim hardness it is beneficial to have a high concentration of larger diamonds. When the material being drilled is hard, the diamond shold be of a hard grade and small in size with the concentration being a little lower than in a soft / medim materials segment. A large proportion of Mexco wet core drills are handmade, this enables s the facility to tailor make wet core drills to yor specific reqirements. 31 i TROUBLESHOOTING DIAMOND BLADE FAULTS TROUBLESHOOTING CORE DRILL FAULTS i Most common isses occr as a reslt of the following: Incorrect matching of diamond blade to ctting application Incorrect se of diamond blade Machinery fatige, wear or falts Mishandling of prodct in transit Slow/Decreased Ctting Speed Possible Cases: Check diamond blade rotational arrow against machine direction. If the segment becomes smooth it can be redressed by rnning the segments throgh an abrasive material i.e. Lightweight concrete block or concrete roof tile. Check that the blade application is correct for the material being ct. Check for correct tensioning of machine belts. The machine being sed may have insfficient power. Increased or Abnormal Segment Wear Possible Cases: Incorrect blade specification chosen for material application, a harder bonded specification may be reqired. Inadeqate water spply. Excessive speed of rotation. Worn machine bearings casing blade centre to lose shape. Uneven Segment Wear Possible Cases: Improper se by machine operator, blade being sed as grinding or smoothing tool. Excessive pressre being applied by operator. Blade incorrectly monted on shaft, Worn or damaged machine bearings, or worn shaft. Segment Under Ctting (In the event of visible nder ctting of segment the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: Over ctting into the sb base where the constant abrasive rbbing of loose material can have an adverse effect on the steel centre. By redcing the depth of ct the wear will be redced. Insfficient water spply, by increasing water spply aiding slrry removal will redce the effects of nderctting. Loss of nderctting protection. Segment Cracks (In the event of segment cracks the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: The segment is too hard for the material being ct casing a hammering or boncing action when in se. Ctting speed is too fast. Vibration of Blade (In the event of blade vibration the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: Worn/damaged shaft or grooved spindle monting adaptor. Damaged/worn machine bearings or shaft. Worn or damaged arbor hole. Blade incorrectly monted. Damaged diamond blade. See loss of tension. Segment Loss (In the event of segment loss the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: The segment is too hard for the material being ct casing a hammering or boncing action when in se. Overheating of segment and steel centre cased by inadeqate irrigation or cooling periods, this is sally diagnosable by the blish discoloration of steel centre. The machine twisted, trned, forced or sbjected to lateral forces whilst in the ct. Blade jolt from material not being held rigidly. Incorrect monting, worn spindle casing ovalised effect. Redced blade spport as a reslt of Worn or damaged flanges. See nderctting. Blade incorrectly monted on shaft, Worn or damaged machine bearings, or worn shaft. Inadeqate cooling processes. Excessive speed of rotation. Loss of Tension in Steel Centre (In the event of tension loss the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: The segment is too hard for the material being ct. Machine not rnning at the correct rpm. Worn or nsecred flanges casing slippage of steel centre. Damaged/worn machine bearings or shafts prodcing lateral stresses on steel centre. Blade poorly aligned when monted on saw. Ot Of Rond Blade (In the event of blade becoming ot of rond the ser shold stop sing immediately) Possible Cases: The segment is too hard for the material being ct casing a hammering or boncing action and wearing disc ot of rond. Damaged/worn machine bearings. Worn/damaged shaft or grooved spindle monting adaptor. Blade incorrectly monted. Most common isses occr as a reslt of the following: Diamond drilling in hammer mode Using an incorrect drill motor for diamond drilling Incorrect matching of core drill to drilling application Machine fatige, wear or falts Mishandling of prodct in transit and storage Slow/Decreased Drilling Speed Possible Cases: The segment does not match the material application being drilled. If the segment becomes smooth it can be redressed by rnning the segments throgh an abrasive material i.e. Lightweight concrete block or concrete roof tile. Excessive speed of rotation.
