INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR BALCO, INC. BCSWE SERIES, NON-COMPRESSED COLOR SILICONE FACED WALL SEALS The following installation instructions are very important. Read them carefully, and be sure you understand them completely before you begin any work. STORAGE & HANDLING The expansion joint systems are shipped unassembled. Balco, Inc recommends these products be installed as soon as possible after they are received. Colder temperatures slow the expansion rate of the seals. Upon receipt, this product should be stored in the horizontal position in a clean, dry location. Store these materials in a protected area. Store Balco, Inc. materials at a minimum 68 o F for a minimum of 24 hours prior to beginning the installation, regardless of the ambient temperature at the installation location. Do not allow silicone adhesive or fl exible seal adhesive, if provided, to freeze. Balco, Inc. recommends that installers wear insulated gloves, Neoprene or other appropriate material, safety glasses, long sleeve shirts and long pants. The work area shall be well ventilated. The recommended shelf life of the silicone adhesive is twelve (12) months Figure 1 2

from the date of manufacture. The recommended shelf life of the BCSWE Seal is nine (9) months from the date of manufacture. All users should familiarize themselves with the MSDS information TOOLS REQUIRED The following tools and materials are recommended for use in the installation of the joint cover system. Flexible Seal Adhesive (not shown) Wide Seals or greater. PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS 1. Scope of Prliminary Requirements The expansion joint stem opening must be formed to a uniform width for the entire length of the joint. To select the proper seal size, the following should be considered. A. The size of the joint opening measured at a temperature of 70 o F should be verifi ed and recorded by the Engineer of record. The joint must be sized every 5-7 feet to ensure that the gap is of uniform width and that the depth is suffi cient for the selected seal. B. The joint opening to receive the new expansion joint system must be constructed to the exact dimensions shown on Balco, Inc. shop drawings. The blockout and the joint opening should comply with the dimensions shown on the drawing. C. The Engineer shall determine the movement required at the joint location. D. Regional temperature history will determine the increment of movement per degree of temperature. 3

2. Joint Opening Preparation The conditions of the joint opening must be surveyed prior to beginning installation work. The following points should be considered and action implemented where required: A. The stem opening of the expansion joint must be constructed equidistant from one another, straight, parallel. and plumb. Concrete saws and diamond grinding discs should be used to correct any deviations. B. The joint interfaces must be parallel to, and continuously equidistant from, each other. They are to be perpendicular to the surface of the wall - making the corner a perfect sharp 90 o angle. Confi rm that the wall surfaces are level (on the same plane) across the joint gap. Report any areas exceeding +/- 1/4 inch to Balco for instructions prior to commencing with installation of the seal. C. It is critical that the leading corner at the joint stem opening, be a sound, square 90 o corner. D. Measure the stem opening, and correlate with the deck temperature. Verify that the opening width is synchronized with the values in the Temperature-Adjustment Table supplied by the Engineer. E. Review all directional change locations; advise Balco, Inc. of the details. F. Spalls in the concrete must be repaired by using a pre-approved patching material. Edge spalling, sharp projections, and concrete voids (bug holes) shall also be repaired prior to proceeding with the joint installation. All repair materials used should have reached full cure conditions as specifi ed by the repair material manufacturer. All obstructions such as form work and refulse shall be removed from the joint opening. G. Concrete adjacent to the expansion joint system must be sound. This should be confi rmed by tapping these areas with a hammer. If a hollow sound is heard or if the concrete cracks, crumbles, or loosens, the unsound concrete must be removed and repaired with a structural repair mortar. Repair mortars acceptable to Balco, Inc. include: Thoroc 1060, Emaco T-415, and Sika 123. conract Balco, Inc. for recommendations for other compatible repair mortars. H. Areas that are repaired must also be sound and be confi rmed by tapping these areas with a hammer. If a hollow sound is heard or if the repaired area cracks, crumbles, or loosens, the unsound repair must be completely removed and repaired again with a structural repair mortar. Access to the bonding surface of the interface walls must be free and clear. Any obstructions must be accounted for in the installation process. I. The expansion joint opening should be cleaned to remove laitance, loosely bonded material and any other contaminant, which may inhibit bonding of the system to the concrete. Clean away any oil, grease, and other contaminants using a 50/50 mixture of alcohol and water. 3. Seal Preparation A. Seal ends must be square. Use a sharp knife to cut seals square, should trimming be needed. Applying mineral spirits to the knife blade will result in a smoother cut of the seal. All starting and ending seal sections must be square to the termination point. 4

INSTALLATION These installation instructions are for use in the installation of the Balco, Inc. BCSWE Series Non- Compressed Colorized Silicone Faced Seals, Types BCSWE-100 through BCSWE-600. The system shall be installed as follows: STEP 1. Review Balco, Inc. approved shop drawings for types and locations. STEP 2. STEP 3. STEP 4. STEP 5. Ensure the joint and concrete have been properly prepared for the seal installation in accordance with the Joint Opening Preparation section of these instructions. Apply painter s tape to the wall surfaces adjacent to the joint. For vertical installations, begin seal installation from the bottom of the joint and work upward. Select the silicone adhesive. Apply a continuous 1/4 bead of the adhesive in the joint along both its sides approximately 1/2-3/4 from the wall surface. THE UNCURED SILICONE WALL ALSO ACT AS A LUBRICANT DURING THE INSTALLATION OF THE SEAL. VERIFY THAT THE ADHESIVE MATCHES THE COLOR OF THE SEAL S SILICONE FACING. DO NOT ALLOW THE ADHESIVE TO DRY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE SEAL. STEP 6. Select the seal and insert one side of the seal into the joint approximately 1. DO NOT EXCESSIVELY PUSH OR PULL THE SEAL, AS IT CAN CAUSE THE SEAL TO STRETCH, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE SEAL. STEP 7. Using a blunt putty knife or the installer s hand, compress the opposite side of the seal and slide it into the joint. DO NOT USE SHARP TOOL WHEN INSERTING THE SEAL INTO THE JOINT, SINCE THEY CAN DAMAGE THE ADHESIVE BEADS. EXERCISE CARE NOT TO TEAR THE SEAL WHEN COMPRESSING IT INTO THE JOINT. STEP 8. STEP 9. Continue to compress and insert the seal into the joint until the sides of the seal are at a depth of approximately 1/4 from the wall surface into the joint and the seals s silicone facing is nominally fl ush with the wall surface and does not protude beyond the wall surface. Verify that the mating seal sections are square and have not been cut at an angle to one another. STEP 10. Compress the mating sections together, compressing the mating sections 1/2-1 with one another at the splices. This results in splices that are in compression after installation. 5

STEP 11. Apply silicone adhesive to the butt end of the mating seal section. In addiiton, apply a 1/4 bead of adhesive on both joint walls, insert 1/2-3/4 as described in Step 5. T AND + TRANSITIONS ARE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE FIELD. THE HORIZONTAL SEAL IS INSTALLED FIRST. THEN THE VERTICAL SEAL IS ABUTTED TO THE HORIZONTAL SEAL FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURES GIVEN IN STEPS 5 THROUGH 8. STEP 12. After installation of the seal, inspect the seal to ensure no voids of gaps are present at any mitered jointsl Use the adhesive supplied to fi ll and seal the joint. STEP 13. Tool the silicone adhesive over all splice seams and transition seams using a small caulking tool. STEP 14. Select the silicone adhesive. Apply a continuous bead of the adhesive along each edge of the seal, at the interface with the surrounding construction so that any irregularities are fi lled STEP 15. Evenly spread the silicone adhesive on the exposed splice or transition seams to provide a clean, aesthetic fi nish. STEP 16. Remove any excess silicone adhesive from the surface of the seal or from the substrate. STEP 17. Remove the painters tape from the wall surface. 6
