This specification covers the requirements of the single mode optical fiber cable to be supplied The single mode optical fiber cable herein after referred to as the "Cable" shall comply with the requirements of this specification and generally shall meet ITU-T Recomm endation G.652D and IEC The cable shall be applied for overhead, duct, or direct buried installation The cable type for direct buried and aerial cable shall be G652D The cable shall consist of 48 Core fibers with four buffers 1.6. The cable shall be new and its lifetime shall be at least 30 years without any significant deterioration. The Bidder shall state the calculation of fiber failure time. 2. Technical Characteristics for Optical Fiber Cables 2.1. Material Properties of the Fibers The geometrical characteristics shall be in accordance with the ITU-T Rec. G652D or the latest Recommendations The fiber shall be made from silica glasses or high-grade silica compound The cable shall consist of up to 6/8 elements stranded around a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) central member and could be upjacketed The bidder shall clearly describe the method how the tubes are stranded The elements shall be a combination of filled loose tubes The tubes shall be filled with a synthetic oil based jelly and non nutritive to fungus The cable shall be non conductive, homogeneous, free from dirt and foreign matter The cable core interstices shall be water blocked.. ~

The coloring shall be stable during the lifetime of the cable Protective material nature The primary protective coating shall be two layers of UV curable acrylate, UV curable urethane or equivalent material. The coating shall be in physical contact with the cladding surface Removal of the primary coating for jointing preferably shall be achieved without the use of chemicals. A simple mechanical operating shall be sufficient to prepare the fiber for jointing The nominal value of the coating diameter shall be 250 flm ± 7% Mode Field Diameter The nominal value of the mode field diameter shall lie within the range 9 to 12 f-lm. The mode field diameter deviation shall be in the limits of ±10% of the nominal value Cladding Diameter The nominal value of the cladding diameter shall be 125 ~Lm. deviation shall be in the limits of± 1 %. The operating temperature shall be -10 C to +70 C and the installation temperature shall be -10 C to +60 C Mechanical Characteristics The fiber shall handle 8N force for the time of 1 second. If the time is extended or shortened, the load will vary correspondingly After installation the cable has to withstand mechanical, climatic and attacks constraints especially: Tensile force due to elongation and contraction caused by temperature changes and wind effects. Vibrations generated by wind Lightning strikes Bird attacks Intensive short time heating Rodent and termites attacks. 3. Technical Characteristics For Cables 3.1. Minimum Bending Radius of Cable The minimum allowable bending radius of the cable shall be less than 20 times the external diameter of the cable during handling or installation, and 15 times when fixed Lightning Protection The bidder shall state the lightning protection methods that conform to ITU-T Rec. K

Box 1047 Addis.Aba ba Eth 1opi a tel (Ol fax (0) Cable core The core, which, at least, consist s of th e stren gth member, loose tubes, fibers, plastic tape wrapping, fillers (if n ecessary) and filling compound, shall be entirely non-metallic The strength member The strength m ember shall be made from n on-metallic m aterial a n d located centrally Loose Tube Buffer A n on-hygroscope loose tube buffer shall surround the fiber. The bidder shall state the buffer tube material Fiber Identification Continuous coloring of the secondary fiber coating shall provide positive identification of each fiber. The coloring shall be stable during the lifetime of the cable. The bidder shall state the color-coding for fibers in cable construction Fiber units The standard cylindrical group or core designs shall conform to the specified in the Technical Requirement section. The bidder shall specify positive identification of each fiber units Filling Compound The cable core shall be filled with a filling compound in order to prevent the ingress of water longitudinally and radically. The filling compound shall be non-hygroscopic. The compound shall be neutral in color, nonodorous, non-toxic and dermatological safe. It shall be homogeneous, uniformly mixed and contain a suitable antioxidant. The filling compound shall be easily removed from the fiber by wiping. The drop point of which shall be at least 70 C Moisture barrier: For a erial cable, the cable core sha ll be completely covered with a plastic coated aluminum tape applied longitudinally with a minimum overlap of not less than 6 mm. For small diameter cables the overlap shall not be less than 20% of the moisture barrier circumferen ce The thickness of the aluminum ta pe without the polym er coating shall be (0.2±0.025) mm. Box 1047 Addis Ababa Ethiopia tel.: +251 (0) fax: +251 (0) protective polymer coating on both side of th e aluminum tape shall be not less than 30 micrometer All Joints of the aluminum tape shall have good mechanical strength and electrical continuity and allow the specified cable diameter sheath thickness requirement to be met For direct buried cables, glass yarns helically laid with water swell able elements so as to ensure longitudinal water tightness The polyethylene part of the sheath shall adhere completely to the protective polymer coating of the aluminum tape and the sheath shall be applied to fit closely to the protected core of the cable Polyethylene Sheath (Cable Jacket for buried cable) The sheath shall consist of tough weather resistant and low density polyethylene compound containing a minimum of 2.5% by weight carbon black, which shall meet international standards Support Strand (only for aerial cable), The aerial cable shall be supported by metallic strand, 1n figure eight geometry. The bidder shall provide full details of: Span lengths that shall not be more than 40m. Sags Tensile strength of aerial cables that limit the elongation Size and weight of cable A patented steel wire galvanized shall be used for support, which is composed of 7 strands of 0.9mm diameter wire. If different the bidder shall state and describe the type used The minimum breaking strength of the steel wires shall be not less than 625Kg The minimum weight of galvanization required for 7x0.9 mm shall be 212gm/m The cable sheath shall be made of black high-density polyethylene to offer maximum protection in hostile environment. Box 1047.ll,dd1s Ababa Ethiopia tel (0) fax (0) and the steel w1re shall be connected to form figure of '8' cross section Armoring (only for buried cable): Corrugated steel tape armoring shall be used Outer jacket (Only for armored cables): The jacket for the armored cable shall consist of a tough weather resistant, high stress-crack resistant of low density polyethylene which shall be in accordance with ASTM D 1248 type 1, class C, cat The nominal thickness of the outer covering shall be as follows: Nominal::::: 2 mm Average::::: 1.9 mm Minimum::::: 1.8 mm The average thickness at any cross-section and the minimum spot thickness at any point shall not be less than, respectively of, 90% and 75% of the specified thickness The sheath shall withstand a spark test voltage at least 8 KV R.M.S. or 12 KV d.c Identification Marker Each cable shall have the following information clearly marked on the outermost sheath at approximately 20 meters intervals. a) Name of Manufacturer b) Manufacturing date c) Type and size of cable d) Laser symbol The length number shall be marked at regular intervals of one meter along the outer sheath Uacket) of the completed cable. "ET" shall be applied just at the half point between the numbers to be marked. The color to these markings shall preferably be white. 4. The minimum length shall be 6000m Maximum drum diameter allowed is 2.60 m and m aximum width (including bolts) is 1.35 m The drum should indelibly ~e marked with: a. Factory name b. Date of manufacturing c. Drum number d. Cable type and length e. Gross weight and net weight f. Each flange shall be marked by an arrow applied to show the direction of winding. 5. Tests: The cables shall be designed and manufactured in order to withstand the following test condition s : 5.1. Tensile test: Shall be in accordance with IEC method E1A and E1B Under "installation" load the fiber strain shall not exceed 1 I 3 of the proof strain; after the test the attenuation shall be fully reversible Crush test: Shall be in accordance with IEC method E Wh ile Load (plate I plate) shall be 1500 N I 100 mm with duration of load 5 minutes, there shall be no change in attenuation after removing the load Impact test: Shall be in accordance with IEC method E While impact energy of 5 N.m, anvil radius of 300 mm, one impact in 3 different places spaced 500 mm apart; there shall no change in attenuation after the test Cable torsion: Shall be in accordance with IEC method E7.
