5 FOREWORD Codes provide the minimum legal requirements for the construction, maintenance, and operation of buildings and structures. A model building code is developed and maintained by an independent standards organization. This arrangement creates a forum to debate proposed revisions and encourages consistency in the application of code provisions. Jurisdictions often choose to adopt a model building code (with or without local amendments). This saves the effort of jurisdictions developing their own codes and allows them to benefit from the shared experience of others using the same model code. The 2009 International Codes (I-codes ) published by the International Code Council (ICC ) includes the International Building Code (IBC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), International Mechanical Code, ICC Performance Code, International Plumbing Code, International Private Sewage Disposal Code, International Property Maintenance Code, International Residential Code, International Wildland-Urban Interface Code and International Zoning Code. This publication identifies the roofing-related provisions of IBC 2009 as well as referenced portions of IFC 2009, IPC 2009 and IEBC 2009 and serves as a guide to identify the minimum requirements for various roof assemblies. This publication is best used with The NRCA Roofing Manual. To construct quality, long-lasting roof assemblies, due care is needed in their design, manufacture, installation, and repair and maintenance to ensure components work together as intended.
