3 PIR board Meeting the insulation demands of Building Regulations In the past, understanding how to meet the requirements of Building Regulations for thermal insulation was relatively straightforward. A table would tell you the U-value that needed to be achieved for a particular floor, wall or roof and the manufacturer could then tell you what thickness of insulation you needed to achieve that value. As green issues and the threat of global warming have come to the top of the agenda, however, the approach has changed and the requirements have not only become tougher, but also harder to put into a simple formula. The current Part L of the Building Regulations (Conservation of Fuel and Power) came into effect in 2006 and represents the Government s response to the EU s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. It applies to all new buildings dwellings and commercial as well as building work on existing buildings. The new requirements mean developers have to use more energy saving insulation, more efficient boilers and low or zero carbon systems to demonstrate compliance. PIR based insulation boards offer many advantages in meeting these requirements as they have a high thermal insulation factor per unit mass and an extremely long performance life. Sensible starting point for calculations to meet TER Element U-value (W/m 2 K) Thickness (mm) Wall Floor * Roof *Dependent on floor perimeter/area measurement Their light weight means they can be easily used with modern construction methods, while their durability means that the building performs to the required level of energy efficiency throughout its life without the need for resourceconsuming replacements. On new buildings Part L sets overall performance standards rather than laying down particular ways of achieving them. The old Elemental Method and Target U-Value approach of determining whether a building is compliant are no longer allowed. Every new building now has to achieve a Target CO 2 Emission Rate (TER) expressed in mass of CO 2 per unit floor area emitted by all the internal heating, hot water, ventilation and fixed lighting. This is calculated using either the Government s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP 2005) for dwellings smaller than 450m 2, or the Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) for non-domestic buildings. EcoT herm appreciates that the removal of the old step-by-step approach means that it is much harder to know how to comply. To help our customers meet these new requirements we are pleased to offer our technical advice. BBA Certification EcoTherm Insulation boards are fully supported with a British Board of Agrément Certificate. For new buildings (England and Wales) Likely required values and thicknesses to achieve TER For new dwellings, in accordance with Building Regulations Approved Document L1A, April 2006, the Dwelling CO 2 Emission Rate (DER) must be no more than the defined Target CO 2 Emission Rate (TER). DER and TER may be calculated by the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP). To achieve the most cost-effective DER will generally require iterations to calculate the permissible U-values for each element of roof, wall, and floor. Experience shows that it is sensible to start with the insulation thicknesses shown above in order to minimise the number of SAP iterations required. For all buildings (Scotland) and for work in existing buildings (England and Wales) Required thicknesses to achieve elemental U-values For work to existing buildings in accordance with Building Regulations Approved Document L1B and L2B, U-values for each wall, floor or roof element must be no more than those in the illustration adjacent. For new buildings other than dwellings (England and Wales) To comply with ADL2A the Building CO 2 Emission Rate (BER) must be no more than the Target CO 2 Emission Rate (TER). Experience shows that the insulation thicknesses shown above are likely to be acceptable in a Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) calculation. For new buildings and work to existing buildings (Scotland) For work under Scottish Regulations U-values for each wall, floor or roof element must be no more than those in the illustration adjacent, subject to certain other factors (i.e. the total area of doors, windows and rooflights must be less than 25% of the total floor area and the boiler or heating appliance must have an efficiency not less than 78% by SEDBUK calculations). U-value = 0.20 Thickness = 100mm U-value = 0.25 Thickness = mm U-value = Thickness = mm U-value = Thickness = mm U-value = Thickness = 65 70mm Unheated space e.g. garage U-value = Thickness = 50 80mm dependent on floor P/A For new buildings (England and Wales) U-value = 0.35 Thickness = 50mm Unheated space e.g. garage U-value = Thickness = 50 80mm dependent on floor P/A U-value = 0.16 Thickness = 130mm U-value = 0.16 Thickness = 130mm U-value = Thickness = 50 80mm dependent on floor P/A U-value = 0.25 Thickness = 50 80mm dependent on floor P/A For all buildings (Scotland) and for work in existing buildings (England and Wales) U-value = Thickness = 50 70mm England and Wales existing walls U-value = 0.35 England and Wales new extension walls U-value = 0.30 England and Wales new existing walls U-value = tel:

4 Environment BRE Green guide 'A' rated EcoTherm is fundamentally dedicated to environmental responsibility by minimising energy consumption. Our polyisocyanurate (PIR) products are among the most efficient and effective means of minimising energy loss from buildings. EcoTherm has achieved ISO accreditation; a reflection of the entire organisations commitment to sustainability through their Environmental Management System. All our insulation boards are manufactured from CFC- and HCFC-free grades of material which ensure zero ozone depletion potential (ZERO ODP) and a global warming potential (GWP) factor of 3 which comfortably surpasses the target of 5 and is BRE Green Guide A rated. Whenever we use timber, such as in our Eco-Deck laminated roof decking, it is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, which gives assurance that it is legal and sustainable at every stage of its chain of custody. Wide experience supported by accelerated lab tests have proved that PIR insulation boards are among the most durable construction products. They will not rot, shrink, absorb moisture, or decay as some fibre board or organic insulation materials may, and so they will deliver design insulation values throughout the full life of the building. And of course all our products are recyclable. In practice PIR products have one of the highest ratings for successful recycling. EMS " Within 8 months users will have recouped the energy required to produce the EcoTherm product in energy savings." "1m 3 of PIR saves 40km 3 of CO 2. That s 60kg of CO 2 over 75yrs 50% more than traditional insulation." 6 tel:
