2 THE GROWING NEED FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING AIT SOLUTIONS/ HABITECH CENTER AT AIT Increasing gap between the average person s income and housing affordability everywhere in the world. Habitech Center was established in 1988 initially as a research and development center for building components and technology at the School of Engineering and Technology, AIT. Habitech Center has been instrumental in enabling sustainable and affordable housing and social infrastructure buildings for communities in and through out Asia. This has enabled AIT to accomplish its mission of contributing significantly in the development of the region. Disasters are leaving thousands of families and vulnerable households without a suitable home. The need to provide robust construction systems which can increase resilience is a key challenge that society faces today. In developing suitable solutions, several factors require careful consideration such as: Reducing the overall construction cost by using alternative low-cost local materials Developing technologies in a collaborative manner by integrating employment generation Utilizing environmentally friendly and energy efficient processes and procedures and utilizing low-cost building techniques. Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is one of the many organizations and companies who are prioritizing development of innovative solutions to support the need for social housing. AIT Solutions and Habitech Center jointly work on projects related to sustainable, cost-effective, and appropriate infrastructure technologies and techniques through the extensive experience and capabilities of AIT experts, and the labs and centers. 5 SELECTED PROJECTS Post-Tsunami Rehabilitation Project Child-Friendly Primary Schools Myanmar Bandung Low Cost Housing Indonesia Chumphon Cabana, Resort The project aims to contribute to the rehabili tation and reconstruction after the tsunami that struck Thai land by providing 56 housing units and one community center. Habitech built child-friendly primary schools in 45 remote villages of Delta areas in Ayeyarwady and Yangon Division of Myan mar for victims of cyclone Nargis. Demonstration of energyefficient technologies for community buildings. The resort consists of three 3-story buildings with a total of 108 rooms and a 1,000 sqm. multi-purpose hall. AIT International School Primary School Building Lao PDR, Nepal Residential Building Bhutan Khao Kho Housing Projects The objective of this project is to build a primary school for the AIT community. To demonstrate the use of in terlocking soil-cement bricks for cost-effective school build ings. The use of soil-cement bricks is getting more and more popular for the construction of residential buildings in Bhutan. To provide sustainable costeffective, and appropriate infrastructure technologies and techniques to the several communities in Where Habitech Technology can be used? Residential Buildings School Buildings Health Clinics Office Buildings Resort Villas Community based projects Recognition The Habitech Building System has been recognized by the United Nations Human Settlement Program and the international community as contributing to housing and economic development through the transfer of technology and has been compiled on the Habitat Best Practices database for others to learn from and incorporate in their own work. Awards In 1994, Habitech Center was awarded the Matsushita Memorial Prize by the Japan Housing Association in recognition of excellent achievements in improving human settlements in Asian countries by promoting research and development related to technologies for low cost housing as well as providing educational programs and facilities to disseminate the results of their research efforts. Post-Tsunami Rehabilitation Project in was awarded Best Community Housing Project for year 2008.
