1 EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Purdue University - West Lafayette, Indiana Master of Science (Structural Engineering) Purdue University - West Lafayette, Indiana PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS: After earning a Master of Science Degree in structural engineering from Purdue University, Mr. Richardson began his career as a staff structural engineer in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this role, Mr. Richardson provided a variety of efficient, cost-effective structural designs for various public and private clients. His design experience included the use of the latest in computer technology design aids for the structural design and analysis of new and existing education facilities, commercial and municipal office buildings, correctional facilities, distribution facilities, and water treatment tanks. In 2002, Mr. Richardson transitioned his engineering focus to providing forensic engineering services and facility condition assessments, which is still his primary focus. As a forensic engineer, Mr. Richardson has a wide range of experience in forensic investigations including structural failures and collapses, construction defects, water infiltration, fires and explosions, roof failures, and severe weather damage assessment. Mr. Richardson has performed numerous investigations on a wide variety of construction materials and methods. He is well versed in identifying building component deficiencies and any resulting damages and liability. His investigations often times result in providing recommendations and designs of unique and effective repairs to correct the deficiencies. Mr. Richardson has previous training and certification for the determination of the cause and origin of fires and/or explosions involving residential and commercial structures, vehicles, and equipment. He utilizes his experience in physics, fire science, and engineering in the reconstruction of fire scenes to determine the incident s cause from the remaining physical evidence. This specialized training and experience also proves instrumental in determining the extent of structural damage to buildings that have sustained a fire incident. Based on his professional accomplishments and experience, Mr. Richardson was elevated to a managerial position in Columbus, Ohio in In this unique role, he was responsible for the development and management of forensic engineering staff serving all of Ohio in addition to conducting forensic investigations. Subrogator: A publication dedicated to the art of recovery by National Association of Subrogation Professionals, Spring/Summer 2013 PROJECT EXPERIENCE: Retail Roof Collapse and Emergency Shoring, Columbus, Ohio A portion of the roof on this 63,000-sft furniture store collapsed during an intense rainstorm. American Structurepoint was retained to determine the cause of the failure and assist with possible subrogation and litigation. The project included coordinating emergency shoring efforts to stabilize the undamaged portion of the structure to prevent further collapse, protect the store contents, and provide a safe environment for the investigation. Our forensic investigation included examination of the collapse debris and review of architectural drawings, which revealed the roof collapse was the result of excessive rainwater ponding on the roof due to inadequate capacity of the roof drains. The roof-drain deficiency was the result of a contractor error during an earlier renovation and re-roofing project, in which the size of the roof drains were reduced

3 significantly. The deficient roof drains in the low points of the roof allowed water to accumulate and overstress the roof framing members, causing the partial roof collapse. The partial loss of the building and contents was well over $1 million in claims. The Greene Lifestyle Center Façade Evaluation, Beavercreek, Ohio Within a year of construction of this 4-story apartment building in a lifestyle center, the building was exhibiting widespread leaking windows and exterior balcony doors. American Structurepoint was retained to investigate the cause of the water infiltration and act as a mediator between the numerous parties involved, including the property owner, contractor, architect, product manufacturers, material suppliers, attorneys, and insurance carriers. The façade evaluation and water infiltrating investigation revealed nearly all of the windows and exterior doors were defective in addition to façade flashing installation errors. Services also included designing repair procedures to correct the know issues discovered when conducting façade tests. Or involvement in the project contributed to the liability settlement of the issue, which averted pending lawsuits. Airport Facilities Condition Assessments, Columbus, Ohio American Structurepoint conducted multiple facility condition assessments for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, including the physical condition assessments of nearly 40 individual structures, with more than a combined 2.6 million-sft located at Port Columbus International Airport, Rickenbacker International Airport, and Bolton Field Airport in central Ohio. In addition, a capital reserve study was performed to assist the Authority in developing maintenance and repair budgets for each of the inspected buildings over a 10-year period. The comprehensive analysis and assessment of building systems included engineering, architectural and structural analysis, energy conservation opportunities, deferred maintenance items, code compliance items, building envelope deficiencies, and other facility infrastructure improvements. Building systems included Air Cargo Storage Facilities, an electrical vault, airfield maintenance facility including office spaces and maintenance garages, and snow removal equipment storage facilities. The size of the facilities range from the 835,000- sft Port Columbus terminal to smaller operational support structures of less than 500 sft. Commercial Roof Collapse, Columbus, Ohio An approximately 1,200-sft partial roof collapse occurred to a single-story building constructed with structural steel open-web roof joists. The structure was being remodeled to add two 14-ft overhead doors to a load bearing masonry wall. The partial roof collapse was determined to initiate due to the improper shoring techniques used to temporarily shore the roof joists while the new openings were cut into the load bearing masonry wall. Residential Water Infiltration, Hopkinsville, Kentucky This project included the investigation of the cause and water infiltration to an approximately 2,000-sft home built in the 1930 s. Evidence of water infiltration was observed in several areas of the home. It was determined the clay tile roof replaced in the 1970 s did not contain adequate water dams in the valley metal sheets. This allowed water to migrate below the roof tiles and penetrate the roof. Restaurant Freezer Collapse, Columbus, Ohio

4 This 250-sft, temperature controlled storage structure used to store restaurant goods was constructed with insulated sandwich panel roof and walls. The cause of the roof collapse was determined to be the result long-term deteriorating of the metal skin and polyurethane foam core due to deterioration of the roofing membrane on top of the exterior storage structure. Roof Damage Assessments, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky These projects included roof damage assessment of numerous residential and commercial structures due to several severe storms that passed through Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The damage assessment was performed on several roofing materials including asphalt composition shingles, clay tiles and shingles, cement fiber board shingles, EPDM membranes, etc. Residential Water Infiltration Investigation, New Albany, Ohio Water infiltration investigation to determine the cause of extensive water and mold discovered in several exterior walls. The investigation found a large amount of condensation forming inside the wall cavity. The condensation was the result of improper construction methods. Restaurant Vehicle Collision, Whiting, Indiana This project consisted of a vehicle colliding with a historic building resulting in the partial collapse of the structure. The scope included the structural evaluation and emergency shoring design of the damaged structure as well as the structural design of the reconstruction of the structure. University Coal Storage Building Collapse, West Lafayette, Indiana Cause determination of the collapse of a coal storage building under construction at the Purdue University campus. Intended to hold coal fuel in preparation for combustion at the university s power plant, the structure consisted of an open timber frame with metal siding and roofing. It was determined the partially erected structure was not adequately braced to resist the moderately high winds. House Explosion, Evansville, Indiana The scope included the cause and origin determination of a single-story wood frame house explosion resulting in two fatalities. It was determined a water supply line repair caused a natural gas leak outside the house. Natural gas entered the house through the masonry foundation walls and foundation drainage system. The explosion occurred during the relighting of a gas water heater pilot light. Deck Collapse, Indiana Insurance, Peru, Indiana Forensic investigation of a second-story residential wood balcony deck collapse. The 250-sft deck collapsed with seven occupants on it, resulting in personal injuries. ACE was to determine the cause of the collapse and any possible building code violations for liability purposes. The investigation revealed deterioration and inadequate attachment of the deck to the primary structural system of the house, which led to the complete collapse of the deck. Key evidence forming the collapse theory included deteriorated wood members, the orientation of the bent nails, post-collapse location of structural members, and eyewitness information. Sanjo Steel Structure Fire Inspection, Greenwood, Indiana Structural evaluation of a fire-damaged steel fabrication facility. The multi-story structure was constructed of steel, concrete, masonry, and timber materials. The fire-

5 damaged structure exhibited masonry cracks, steel truss warping, concrete spalls, and timber char. The scope included the recommendation of required structural repairs. Tornado Damage Assessment, Indianapolis, Indiana Emergency inspection and evaluation of the structural integrity of more than 35 houses and buildings damaged by tornados on September 20, 2002, in the greater Indianapolis area. The jobs included the evaluation of structural integrity, extent of damage, identification of possible building code violations, and repair recommendations for insurance purposes. Oakland Elementary School, Elwood, Indiana Provided structural designs for the renovation of an aging elementary school, including the addition of new classrooms, corridors, and gymnasium adjacent to the existing structure. The existing structure utilized heating tunnels below the floor slab, which provided for access to mechanical and plumbing equipment. The structure s old construction techniques as well as the tunnels, which were to remain accessible, provided many renovation design constraints. The new construction consisted of a metal roof deck, steel bar joists, steel framing, reinforced concrete masonry walls, and shallow foundations. Pan Am Building Deteriorated Beam Evaluation, Indianapolis, Indiana Evaluation and testing of deteriorated concrete beams of a mid-rise office building and pedestrian plaza. Several concrete precast beams exhibited severe cracking and spalling, exposed and severely deteriorated steel reinforcing, and seized bearing elements resulting from infiltration of chlorides through a failed expansion joint on the pedestrian plaza. The scope included expansion joint repair, concrete and steel strength evaluation, and adequate beam repairs.
