SUPER with SprayJet Module refurbishes Tromsø airport. Spray Paver with NAVITRONIC Plus Makes its Norwegian Debut Seite 1/7 Job Site Details 1/2 Pavement rehabilitation and extension of runway at Tromsø airport, Norway Tromsø airport in northern Norway is a vital hub for numerous traffic links both within the country and to the neighbouring states. The runway s wearing course needs renewing on a regular basis as it gets severely eroded by the constantly blowing, extremely salty wind coming in from the Arctic Sea. This time, in addition to pavement rehabilitation, the runway was also to be extended by 250m. Contractor Lemminkäinen Norge AS opted for a VÖGELE SUPER with SprayJet Module to carry out the asphalt works. For the first time in Norway, the paver was equipped with NAVITRONIC Plus, the VÖGELE System for 3D Machine Control. Length of section: 2km rehabilitated, 250m constructed Width of section: 45m rehabilitated, 60m constructed Paving Details Pave width: 4m Layer thickness:* base courses 6cm and 17cm binder courses 6.5cm and 4.5cm wearing course 3cm * For extension of the runway, base and binder courses were paved in two layers each. This method of construction ensures flexibility of the thick asphalt package.

Paving projects in Arctic regions are nothing new to Lemminkäinen s asphalt professionals. In the past years, they have already carried out pavement rehabilitation at the civilian airports of Værnes, Skagen, Bodø and Longyearbyen (on Spitzbergen, see RoadNews 08) as well as at the military air base of Rygge. Pavement rehabilitation of the 2km runway at Tromsø airport had to be undertaken during the night, as the airport operator Avinor did not accept a closure during the brief Arctic summer. And yet, there was no need for artificial lighting of the job site: it was flooded with light from the midnight sun shining in Tromsø from mid-may until the end of July. The project was carried out in June and July Every night from 10 pm to 6 am, asphalt for a new wearing course was paved on a runway section roughly 650m long and 4m wide. Lemminkäinen moved onto the job site with a SUPER with SprayJet Module. The paver sprays bitumen emulsion and paves asphalt for the new surfacing in a single pass. This is a particularly quick, clean and economical method, capable of creating an optimal and durable bond between the layers. The freshly paved asphalt was compacted by four HAMM rollers of the DV series with oscillation. 4 Seite 3/7 Premiere for the spray paver with NAVITRONIC Plus In addition to renewal of the wearing course, the runway was extended by 250m at the same time. This extension had become necessary due to increasingly large passenger aircraft landing in Tromsø. For the 15,000m2 of new runway, the SUPER with SprayJet Module placed two base courses, two binder courses and a wearing course. The SprayJet module installed on the paver was activated or deactivated as required. Furthermore, the contractor used NAVITRONIC Plus on this job site, the cutting-edge digital system for 3D machine control to ensure fully automatic control of grade and slope, layer thickness, the screed s position and the paver s direction of motion. This was a premiere for Lemminkäinen, as it was the first project in Norway on which the VÖGELE spray paver was used together with NAVITRONIC Plus. 01 // 01 // Checking the temperature of the freshly paved layer: the temperature of the asphalt right behind the paver was some 170 C. The temperature of the mix behind the screed was checked on a regular basis a must given these extreme weather conditions.

Seite 4/7 Lemminkäinen had several good reasons for implementing the new technology. One important factor was that air traffic on the airport continued throughout the project s duration. Thanks to 3D machine control, the paving team could do without tensioned wires. These would have involved a risk for the safety of aircraft landing and taking off from the airport and, in addition, considerable cost would have been incurred for installing and removing the wires. Another reason: digital survey data was already available. This trend will gain more and more ground in future, a fact that also speaks in favour of NAVITRONIC Plus. 03 // 03 // Since the airport remained open to air traffic during the day, paving work could only be done between midnight and 6 am. 02 // 02 // WIRTGEN Group machinery ensured precise and reliable paving. This picture was taken at 1.30 in the morning when the midnight sun was high in the sky.

Seite 5/7 German and Norwegian specialists from VÖGELE provided their expert support for Lemminkäinen when working with NAVITRONIC Plus for the first time. Using the system is absolutely uncomplicated, said Site Manager Gunnar Unstad. Nevertheless, we wanted to be sure we were doing everything right and exploiting its many advantages in an optimal way. So we were happy about the support provided by VÖGELE. The results eventually proved that the team had done a good job: after the project s completion, measurements over a length of 4m in both longitudinal and transverse directions and comparison with the digital values specified for layer thickness and screed width revealed deviations of less than 3mm. 04 // Only SprayJet technology is permitted Because the job sites and their surroundings always remain clean when using the SUPER with SprayJet Module, Norwegian airport operator Avinor has meanwhile specified the technology developed by VÖGELE as the only method permitted when it comes to paving new wearing course at Tromsø airport. For good reason: the SUPER with SprayJet Module applies bitumen emulsion at a low pressure of no more than 3 bar and so precisely that the spray mist developing is reduced to an absolute minimum. Even in strong winds, the emulsion is not carried away. As a result, bitumen residues on adjacent kerbs and walls are now a thing of the past. And the technology from VÖGELE also provides for cleanliness at the beginning and the end of paving: at the push of a button, the spraying of emulsion is activated and deactivated precisely at the specified points. 04 // Lemminkäinen s Site Manager Gunnar Unstad shows where they are working tonight. He was fully satisfied with the progress on site: NAVITRONIC Plus is really easy to use.

Seite 6/7 Not only for wearing course Yet there are numerous additional arguments in favour of the spray paver made by VÖGELE. Its versatility is a particularly strong point: the machine not only paves wearing course, but all other asphalt layers as well. Rehabilitation of the runway in Tromsø, for instance, was a typical job for SprayJet technology. But, when extending the runway by 250m, base and binder courses were also paved by the SUPER with SprayJet Module a classic paving job without a need for spraying emulsion but also without a need for conversion work. The SprayJet module can remain on the paver even when emulsion is not being sprayed. And besides NAVITRONIC Plus, mechanical sensors or noncontacting acoustic or sonic sensors can also be fitted for grade and slope control. What we like best about the spray paver is its versatility. It s a true all-rounder, says Gunnar Unstad, referring to his flexible machine. 05 // 05 // Even in very strong winds the leaning posture of Eddie Engebretsen from WIRTGEN Norway gives an idea the bitumen emulsion is applied accurately by the spray nozzles of the SUPER with SprayJet Module. Emulsion was neither taken away by the wind, nor was its adhesion diminished.

Satisfied site manager Even before the midnight sun set, Lemminkäinen handed over the rehabilitated runway to Avinor. After completion of the project, Site Manager Unstad praised the cooperation with the WIRTGEN Group: WIRTGEN Norway and the VÖGELE specialists from Germany provided excellent support. They gave our team detailed instructions on how to operate NAVITRONIC Plus, remaining on hand to help us throughout the entire project. Seite 7/7 Highlights NAVITRONIC Plus The NAVITRONIC Plus controls the steering of the paver directly via the machine control system. This means that a road paver whose current position is continuously picked up via laser-based total station or GPS is guided along the planned route fully automatically. Furthermore, NAVITRONIC Plus handles conventional grade and slope control as well as control of the screed s position. True 3D machine control system for road pavers. Use of digital design data for precise control of paver and screed. Control accuracy in the millimetre range. Maximum precision. 06 // 06 // Construction of even large areas can be carried out with highest precision thanks to NAVITRONIC Plus. Economical use for linear job sites (motorways, highways and country roads), as well as for surfacing large areas. Open port for connecting external 3D positioning systems from wellknown manufacturers.
