However, unlike the famous all-purpose glues, adhesives for professional use have to be truly specialised to be able to fulfil their functions. For anyone wishing to select exactly the right adhesive for a particular task, it is not enough to know the different performance profiles of the adhesives. He needs to know about the chemical and physical reactions in specific environments and situations. This brochure is intended to guide you through the world of adhesives and to give you assistance in finding the ideal OTTO product for your application. And, last but not least, the guide will help you to understand why our application experts recommend a particular product, although this can never be a substitute for individual consultation.

6 Silicone adhesives Hybrid adhesives 7 Flexible, tough and robust. Silicone adhesives are notable for their great flexibility on the one hand and, on the other, for their resistance to water, sunlight, temperatures or fluctuations in temperature, and to chemical stress and aging. They are, therefore, ideal for application in places where other adhesives fail: on outdoor façades, in sanitary areas and even underwater. Their excellent elastic recovery also make them the best choice if movements are going to have an impact on the bonds. Here their compensation properties come into play and the bond remains undamaged even by thrust, shearing or compressive forces and, once the strain is removed, it returns to its original shape. They are ideal for bonding in glass and window construction, for example, where the bonding partners expand to different degrees when temperatures fluctuate. However, in comparison with other adhesives, their adhesive strength is rather low. Hybrid adhesives are considered a good alternative in situations where silicones are not used. They are elastic and have a similar ability to compensate stress even if their general performance profile and their resistance to high temperatures are somewhat lower than those of silicone adhesives. Hybrid adhesives have high notch and tear resistance. Their broad spectrum of adhesion, even with high exposure to water, and the good resistance to weathering and UV means they are suitable for indoor and outdoor bonds. Furthermore, they have a relatively neutral reaction to coatings. Between two worlds.

8 CProperties of hybrid sealants and adhesives Properties of hybrid sealants and adhesives 9 The new generation of hybrid adhesives Generally speaking, we understand bonding to mean a tight-fitting connection between two components. Looking at it from this rather onesided perspective, one could assume that the stronger the adhesive, the better it would be. However, there is a trend nowadays in industrial production and in building construction towards elastic adhesion or, in other words, adhesives that will compensate stress especially when the adhesive joints are exposed to tension caused by varying thermal expansion of the components. Vibrations and tremors must also be considered, especially in the manufacture of air-conditioning or ventilation systems or when bonding different materials such as glass and metal. Hybrid adhesives are a relatively new development. The accurate name for a polymer base is silaneterminated polymer or, in short, STP. As with the polyurethane adhesives, curing of the hybrid products occurs due to a reaction with moisture. However, hybrids are free of isocyanates and therefore, as a rule, not subject to the labelling requirements needed for most of the polyurethane adhesives. Hybrid sealants and adhesives bond to many surfaces without primers, they have high notch resistance and are extremely resistant to tearing. They have a broad spectrum of adhesion, even when exposed to water load, and good weather resistance and are therefore suitable for use both inside and outside. Our latest hybrid sealants OTTOSEAL M 350 (for sealing work without silicone), OTTOSEAL M 360 and OTTOSEAL M 365 (for expansion joints in building construction or attachment joints) and OTTOSEAL M 380 (for joints in ventilation or air-conditioning systems) excel due to the mechanical properties which determine their use for elastic seals. The waterresistant premium hybrid adhesive/sealant OTTOCOLL M 500 bonds with innumerable surfaces without primers. The same goes for the transparent premium hybrid adhesive OTTOCOLL M 501 which can be used for less conspicuous bonds. A real all-rounder for construction work is the super flexible mounting adhesive OTTOCOLL AllFlex. The fluid hybrid adhesive OTTOCOLL M 590 is ideal for larger flat surfaces. The curing process of the 2 component hybrid mounting adhesive OTTOCOLL M 570 is remarkably quick, and that of OTTOCOLL M 580 even more so, even when the layers are thick. OTTOCOLL HiTack has extremely high initial bonding, meaning that securing aids are usually unnecessary. The professional workman has at his disposal the most up to date product for reliable bonds, quick and economical to use. Resistance to weather and aging Hybrids are extremely resistant to both weather and aging. Therefore they are unproblematic to use for both interior and exterior work. Hybrid sealants and adhesives are also ideal for areas exposed to water. The exception, of course, are products developed especially for interior use. Mechanical strength Hybrid adhesives have high notch resistance and withstand tension and tearing well due to their high mechanical strength. These properties are immensely important when bonds are under stress. Areas of use A main feature of hybrid sealants and adhesives is their potential for compensating tensions that occur between bond partners or between materials that are sealed. This property of the hybrids is essential for bonding or sealing materials with different thermal expansion coefficients. Temperature resistance Sealants and adhesives on a hybrid basis are resistant to temperatures between -40 C and +90 C once they have hardened. However, temperatures between +5 C and +40 C are absolutely necessary when working with them. Coating compatibility Our hybrid sealants and adhesives are compatible with coatings in accordance with DIN This means that the sealants and adhesives will tolerate a 1 mm overlap of coating without a negative reaction occurring between the two substances. Labelling requirements Our hybrid sealants and adhesives do not contain isocyanates and are therefore not subject to any labelling requirements.

10 Acrylate adhesives PU adhesives 11 The economical alternative. Dispersion-based acrylate adhesives are characterised by good bonding strength and paintability. However, they prove less robust under some loads such as high temperatures. In addition, they always require an absorbent bond partner, which limits the range of application. Since acrylate adhesives are based on water, if they are not fully cured they are susceptible to frost. Because of these limitations, acrylate adhesives are only an economical alternative for very specific applications, mainly indoors. Structural PU adhesives are the kind that professionals will choose if they require a nonpositive bond with maximum bonding strength. Single-component PU adhesives foam up a little when applied, filling small hollow spaces in uneven or rough surfaces and in this way they provide the best basis for adhesion. After curing they can be sanded and painted over without any difficulty. Due to their low UV and temperature resistance and the limited weather resistance they should only be used for indoor applications or in places outside that are protected from water. Because PU adhesives contain a moderate amount of diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI), trading, storage, processing and disposal of this group of adhesives are tasks that require caution and responsibility. Uncompromising adhesion.

12 The OTTO adhesive product range The OTTO adhesive product range 13 Alternatives, not compromises. OTTO regards itself as a manufacturer of products for professionals with no compromises on quality. For this reason, OTTO offers a variety of highly specialised adhesives with different properties, based to date on five systems of adhesive. The range of application includes fully automated processing in industrial plants as well as many tasks for the user-friendly products on building sites. New requirements, such as the present statutory categorisation of PU adhesives, are considered indispensable in many sectors. Here at OTTO we regard them as a challenge to be encountered with innovative new developments in addition to providing information for businesses and processors in the trade.
