MANUFACTURER S DIRECTION S FOR APPLICATION FOR SoyStep Marine Decking Marine Decking

SoyStep Marine Decking Marine Decking Directions for Application SoyStep Marine Decking is a bio-infused 100% solids epoxy product, which is utilized as a floor application, designed to meet marine decking specifications required by government, commercial, industrial and private sectors. 1. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS: SoyStep Marine Decking is a 100% solids, bio-infused epoxy, which contains marble, limestone and quartz rock that is troweled into place. The system is evenly textured, with a natural slip-resistant or orange peel finish. SoyStep Marine Decking is installed between one-eighth (1/8) and three-sixteenth (3/16) inch thickness. A seal coat is used as a floor layer of protection for the decking system, which also allows for chemical protection, durability and ease of cleanliness. 2. PROPER TOOLS: The following tools are necessary for the installation of SoyStep Marine Decking:: 4x12 finishing trowel, 3x12 finishing trowel, 7 Bull Nose Gauging Trowel, 2 Margin Trowel, low level light, power mixer, HoverTrowel, denatured alcohol, painters tape, lint free rags, degreaser, 12 in. notched squeegee, 9 in. red flat squeegee, grinder, sander, screwdriver, fiber mesh tape chip brush, trash bags, low speed drill and mixing blade, vacuum, broom, liquid nails, knee pads. Other equipment is also recommended, which is detailed in our Certification Program. 3. TEMPERATURE CONTROLS: The ideal working temperatures to install SoyStep Marine Decking or sealer is between 65 F and 85 F. If the temperature in the area is over 90 F do not attempt to apply flooring, due to insufficient working time for proper installation. Too high of a temperature will make the product cure too quickly and may cause a poor finish. i. If the temperature in the area is below 50 F, the product will be more difficult to apply because the cold temperature will give the material a tendency to want to open, creating small voids instead of closing. It will require more troweling because the epoxy s viscosity will be increased, making for a much more difficult installation procedure. ii. The cure time will take longer when the deck temperature is below 70 F. Instead of 8 to 12 hours cure rate, the cure time for 50 F will be 24 to 48 hours. SoyStep Marine Decking takes longer to cure at cooler temperatures. iii. After SoyStep Marine Decking has been installed wait until the next day to inspect the deck for a tack free feel. iv. Put booties over shoes, look and feel for any small stones, which may be dropped on cured surface. With a razor, knife or small scrapper, knock off any stones, which may be on the surface. 4. SURFACE PREPARATION: ALL substrates must be clean, dry and sound. Completely remove all dirt, dust, debris, paint, laitance, grease, wax, oil animal fats, loose particles, etc. by sanding, sandblasting, chipping, brush hammering, wire brushing or high pressure washing. Substrate should then be thoroughly rinsed, squeeze-dry mopped or wiped with denatured alcohol and allowed to dry.

PROTECTION: Tape paper down in hallways and working areas to protect the floor surfaces from any resin spills or traffic which may require major clean-up on areas outside the working area. TAPING: Before any application of SoyStep Marine Decking, whether it s skim, SoyStep Marine Decking or sealer applications, tape over any metal thresholds, equipment and deck drains with painters or duct tape. Remove tape before material hardens. STEEL DECKS: Steel decks must be clean, free from oil, grease, rust and loose scale. The deck should be wiped with denatured alcohol. Allow deck to dry before applying skim resin or bond coat. WOOD FLOORS: Not recommended. CONCRETE FLOORS: New floors must be allowed to cure thoroughly for 28 days and shall have been free of water for at least 7 days before application of SoyStep Marine Decking. Older floors should be shot blasted or grinded and thoroughly cleaned. If badly cracked, crumbling, punky or deeply contaminated with oil or fat, a new concrete topping of proper thickness and strength should be installed. Swollen areas should be chipped out and any cracks, spalls, joints or other minor depressions filled with epoxy underlayment as recommended by the manufacturer. VINYL TILE: Tile must be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate any wax buildup. Resinous flooring should not be installed over loose resilient tile or sheet flooring. Any lose tile and adhesive must be removed and areas patched with e p o x y underlayment. It is highly recommended that Vinyl Tile and adhesive be removed and substrate abraded before installation! QUARRY/CERAMIC TILE: Tile and grout must be thoroughly cleaned. Any loose tiles must be reattached or removed and the area filled in with epoxy underlayment. Missing grout must be filled in with epoxy underlayment material. Glazed tile surfaces should be thoroughly grinded. In all cases, it is recommended that a skim coat of SoyPoxy/anti-sag mixture be applied to create a level surface, which will prevent telegraphing of the grout lines. RESURFACING EXISTING SoyStep Marine Decking: Completely remove existing seal coat with 50 grit sandpaper or screen. A non-skid coating may be required, which involves adding glass potter s beads to the sealer. See Certification Binder for detailed application process.

5. UNDERLAYMENT: To fill voids, level or pitch the material to achieve proper drainage the following steps are required. UNDERLAYMENT MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Underlayment material is packaged in five (5) gallon steel pails which contain the aggregates, a gallon size can containing epoxy and a quart size can containing curing agent marked A and B respectively. i. Place a clean empty five (5) gallon pail into the Power Mixer. Open the gallon can of epoxy and the quart can of curing agent and pour both products into the empty five (5) gallon mixing pail. Make sure that all of the product is removed from the cans to ensure product consistency and performance. ii. Turn machine on and allow resins to mix for a minimum of one and one half (1½) minutes. Slowly add aggregate to the resin mixture. Do not add all the aggregate at once. Allow to mix for a minimum of two (2) minutes after all aggregate has been added. Move the mixing blade from side to side to ensure total blending. When mix reaches a uniform look it is properly blended. When mixing in a cool environment, ie. below 68 0 F, additional mixing time should be allowed to ensure thorough mixing. 6. SoyStep Marine Decking B AS E MIXING PROCEDURE Base is provided for wet space and vertical applications BASE MIXING INSTRUCTION: i. Place a clean empty five (5) gallon pail into the Power Mixer. Open the gallon can of epoxy and the quart can of curing agent and pour both products into the empty five (5) gallon mixing pail. Make sure that all of the product is removed from the cans to ensure product consistency and performance. ii. Turn machine on and allow resins to mix for a minimum of one and one half (1 ½) minutes. Add 1 ½ gallons of anti-sag and mix until uniform. Remove 4 scoops using a bullnose trowel. Paste the walls with the removed material. Slowly add aggregate to the remaining resin mixture. Do not add all the aggregate at once. Allow to mix for a minimum of two (2) minutes after all aggregate has been added. Move the mixing blade from side to side to insure total blending. When mix reaches a uniform look it is properly blended. When mixing in a cool environment, i.e. below 68 0 F, additional mixing time should be allowed to ensure thorough mixing. 7. SoyStep Marine Decking FLOOR APPLICATION POURING: After mixing, pour product approximately six (6) inches from the wall or bulkhead and approximately one (1) foot wide. Pour out all material from pail to increase working time. Scrape any residual material from the pail. PLACING: Using a 3x12 finishing trowel, place the material by spreading it heavily against the wall or bulkhead, making good contact with the material to all exposed surfaces to ensure water tight surface. A smaller bull-nose trowel may be used around drains, piping or other protrusions.

8. TROWELING TECHNIQUE: Once material has been placed, use a 3x12 finishing trowel; with medium pressure, start at the wall or bulkhead. Pull material toward you with slow easy pressure to flatten the product and finish material in to its designed even thickness. Repeat until the product looks consistently uniform. Leave a straight vertical edge at the end of the kit to make seaming the next kit easier to achieve. NOTE: Do not feather edges of the product out. A kit will cover approximately 25 to 28 square feet at 1/8 to 3/16 thickness. PROPER FINISHING TECHNIQUE: After product has been placed and troweled to an even consistency at a designed thickness of 3/16 inch, lighten up your pressure and use a 4x12 finishing trowel. Hold the trowel at an angle and comb over the top of the material very lightly. This will flatten any stones that may still be high as well as supply more resin to the surface to seal off the system properly. The easy passes with the trowel will pull the resin to the top much the same way water will do on a cement application. NOTE: Insure that the direction of these finishing strokes is consistent across the entire floor area. Low Level Light: Always use a low level light throughout the process. This helps to identify uneven surfaces and imperfections in the substrate. HoverTrowel: Where permitted SoyStep Marine Decking recommends the use of the HoverTrowel for properly finishing the floor. 9. SEAMING SoyStep Marine Decking i. To work a freshly mixed kit into a finished kit, pour material six (6) inches from the seam. Using a trowel, gently butt the fresh material up to the existing seam. Do not excessively overlap the seam as this could leave a mound in the seam after cure. ii. DO NOT HURRY. Take your time on the seam. Work the material into itself, and then continue the same troweling and finishing technique as outlined earlier. 10. SoyStep Marine Decking SEALER: S o y S t e p M a r i n e D e c k i n g offers a clear 100% solids, solvent free epoxy finish where a high gloss finish is desired. Coarse Non-Skid can be added to any of these products to add a more slip resistant finish. 11. SoyStep Marine Decking SEALER FINISH APPLICATION PROCEDURE: S o y S t e p M a r i n e D e c k i n g Hi- gloss sealer is a two (2) component epoxy sealer packaged in quart and gallon units marked as Part A and Part B. PREPARATION PRIOR TO SEALING: After the floor is installed, scrape the floor using your 3x12 finishing trowel to knock down any aggregate that maybe protruding from the flooring system. Vacuum after scraping takes place. Apply seal coat within 24 hours. SoyStep Marine SEALER FINISH MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Pour the entire contents of component B into component A and stir thoroughly for approximately three (3) minutes. While stirring, scrape the sides and bottom of the container using a low speed drill mixer. Pour mixed resin on floor at once to prolong working time. APPLICATION OF SoyStep Marine Decking HIGH GLOSS SEALER: Apply by brush to base, walls and other hard to reach areas. Sealer will have a tendency to collect at the

bottom of the base and must be spread out over the floor surface to eliminate pools of sealer. For walking surfaces and flat areas apply with red double bladed non marking squeegee. Take care when spreading sealer to allow liquid to penetrate all voids and crevices that may be present. Apply light to medium pressure to squeegee. This will allow excellent surface penetration and allow you to build the depth you are looking for. When you are satisfied that the area is thoroughly covered with an even coat of sealer, roll the surface with a short nap (1/4 paint roller). This will serve to eliminate any squeegee marks or drips that may be present. Wet the roller with material and slowly back roll the floor in one direction and then cross roll. POT LIFE: Refer to each TDS for pot life information. 12. CREW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SoyStep Marine Decking i. One (1) to three (3) men troweling depending on floor area ii. One man to do the mixing iii. One man to keep space clean and to relieve others iv. One supervisor to spot irregularities that are sometimes hard to see during installation. 13. CREW RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SEALER APPLICATION: i. One (1) man to squeegee sealer on floor. ii. One (1) man to back roll. iii. One (1) to mix and spot irregularities that are sometimes hard to see during installation. 14. SECURITY OF SPACE: Clean debris, mark space with warning signs (ex: NO TRESPASSING, WET EPOXY FLOOR, etc.) allow space to remain secure and clear of traffic and moisture for twelve (12) hours at 70 F before opening space to foot traffic. Refer to technical data sheet for all cure times. Tag or secure doorway if area is not ready to be opened to foot traffic. 15. CURING OF SoyStep Marine Decking SoyStep Marine Decking is a 100% solids, solvent free coating which is designed to cure at room temperature. Areas can be opened to foot traffic after twelve (12) hours. TEMPERATURE REACTION: The warmer the temperature the faster the reaction time. The cooler the temperature the slower the reaction time (curing time). IMPORTANT: In all cleaning, make sure that a thorough rinsing with hot water is done to ensure soap detergent film build up does not occur. Do not use any abrasive or heavy caustic agents to clean the deck. Example: Comet, Ajax, Scouring Powder or Lime Scale Remover. The use of such materials will create ugly film build up. The recommended cleaner for SoyStep Marine Decking is EF-5.
