1 Journal of Fuzhou University Natural Science Edition Vol 39 No 5 Oct 2011 DOI CNKI /N TU391 A Research advances in seismic performance of steel beam - to - column connections WU Zhao - qi HE Tian - tian JIANG Shao - fei SU Jian - qiang College of Civil Engineering Fuzhou University Fuzhou Fujian China Abstract Beam - to - column connections are the key parts for guaranteeing beams and columns to work together Their performance can affect significantly the stiffness stability and bearing capacity of structures This paper looked back the history of application and development of the beam - to - column joints and summarized the seismic performance research and some improvements of connection details recently It was found that the energy dissipation and plastic rotation of the common joints are provided by the plastic hinges which are formed in the beams Although the joints display excellent seismic performance in laboratory the damaged joints in practice will be repaired difficultly and costly Some innovative connections based on the intelligent control concept could not only provide good seismic performance but could also be easily repaired after a heavy earthquake However the technology of the connections is not enough to use in practice and the further research need carry out Keywords Steel structure beam - to - column connections seismic performance welded connections bolted connections energy absorption parts zhaoqi_wu@ fzu edu cn XQ - 25
