This is demostrated by the variety of desig styles that have bee achieved icludig curved walls, paels istalled vertically, horizotally or i a brick patter. A wide rage of decorative fiishes ca be used, from site-applied acrylic textures, to available factory-applied polyurethae plai colours ad metallic fiishes. Both 9mm ad 12mm thick ExoTec facade paels may be used i wall facades, fascias ad soffits. Further iformatio relatig to the istallatio of the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system is available i the ExoTec Facade Pael ad Fixig System Istallatio Guide. This Techical Specificatio covers the use of the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system i a commercial facade applicatio over steel girts, masory ad cocrete wallig. This Techical Specificatio also covers the use of the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system i a residetial applicatio over timber or steel framig. The ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system ca also provide a expressed joit pael appearace for buildig soffits. All the iformatio ad details withi both the James Hardie ExoTec Facade Pael ad Fixig System Techical Specificatio ad the Istallatio Guide apply to both the 9mm ad 12mm thick ExoTec facade paels. However, i curved facade walls oly 9mm thick paels may be used depedig o the curve radius, refer to Clause 10.1 for more iformatio. Both 9mm ad 12mm thick ExoTec facade paels may be used i wall facades, fascias ad soffits. 1.3 SPECIFIC DESIGN AND DETAILING For use of the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system outside this published scope, the desiger, architect or egieer must udertake specific desig. James Hardie will ot be resposible or warrat this product istalled outside the scope of this Techical Specificatio. 3 2 DESIGN 2.1 COMPLIANCE All desig ad costructio must comply with the appropriate requiremets of the curret Buildig Code of Australia (BCA), regulatios ad stadards. 2.2 SLAB AND FOOTINGS The slab ad footigs o which the buildig is situated must be desiged ad certified by a qualified structural egieer accordig to all relevat codes, regulatios ad stadards. 2.3 GROUND CLEARANCES Istall James Hardie exteral claddig with a miimum 150mm clearace to the earth o the exterior of the buildig or i accordace with local buildig codes if greater tha 150mm is required. Also, maitai a miimum 50mm clearace betwee James Hardie exteral claddig ad roofs, decks, paths, steps ad driveways. Adjacet fiished grade must slope away from the buildig i accordace with local buildig codes, typically a miimum slope of 50mm miimum over the first metre. Do ot istall exteral claddig i areas where it may remai i cotact with stadig water or debris. 2.4 COASTAL AREAS I coastal areas located withi 1km of the shorelie or large expases of salt water (e.g. Port Phillip Bay, Sydey Harbour east of the Spit ad Harbour Bridges, Swa River wet of the Narrows Bridge), oe of the followig is required: All horizotal ad vertical expressed joits must be filled with a suitable sealat, refer to the sealat filled joits sectio i this specificatio. Where both the horizotal ad vertical expressed joits are ot filled, the joits ad paels must be washed dow twice a year. O uprotected walls, rai will perform this washdow, but where walls are protected by soffits above, the washdow twice per year is a maiteace requiremet. 2.5 MOISTURE MANAGEMENT The ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system acts as a weather shield. To achieve a particular level of weathertightess, the desiger must determie the appropriate moisture maagemet detailig for the project. The desiger should cosider the followig matters whe makig that determiatio: It is the resposibility of the builders ad desigers to idetify moisture related risks associated with ay particular buildig desig. It is the resposibility of the builder to esure appropriate moisture maagemet is provided durig framed wall costructio through effective use of flashigs, sealats ad vapour permeable membraes such as, buildig wraps, vapour retarders ad damp proof course. Before istallig paels, all wall opeigs, peetratios, itersectios, coectios, widow sills, heads ad jambs must icorporate appropriate flashig ad waterproofig. Materials, compoets ad the istallatio practices that are used to maage moisture i framed wall costructio must, at a miimum, comply with the requiremets of relevat stadards, buildig codes ad the maufacturer s specificatios. Sealat at sheet joits must be istalled where detailed i this literature. For wid pressures up to 4.0kPa, see Clauses 6.2 ad 6.3. For pressures icludig ad above 4.0kPa, both vertical ad horizotal joits must be sealat filled, see Clause 6.5. Refer to Clause 6.4 for suitable joit sealat. Where sealat is exposed, refer to the sealat maufacturer for durability iformatio. For high walls it may be ecessary to provide flashig to drai the facade at oe or more itermediate levels. The istallatio of smoke, vermi ad other barriers must ot restrict moisture from reachig flashigs. For iformatio o membrae refer to Clause 3.2 of this guide. 2.6 TOP HAT FRAMING ExoTec facade paels must be fixed to ad itermediate sectios which are istalled vertically over steel, masory or timber structures, See Figure 1. ad itermediate sectios must ot be istalled horizotally. Esure a plaar fixig surface for ExoTec facade paels. The structure ca either be straighteed or packed out betwee the substructure ad top hats. Packig out of top hats must be limited to 20mm maximum. It is the resposibility of the project egieer to determie the appropriate wid pressures for the project ad specify the fixig of the top hats to the structure. The egieer must limit the deflectio of the supportig structure to spa/250 for Serviceability Wid Load. The omial spacig betwee top hats is 605mm for a 1200mm wide pael ad 455mm for a 900mm wide pael, i.e. top hats are required at pael edges ad at itermediate spacigs withi the paels. The s at pael edges have the legs facig out from the structure ad at itermediate locatios the itermediate is used, with the legs fixed to the structure, see Figure 2. 5 3 SUBSTRUCTURE AND PREPARATION 3.1 SUBSTRUCTURE The ad itermediate sectios are istalled vertically over steel girts, masory, cocrete wallig ad i residetial applicatios over timber or steel framig. If usig a alterate product i lieu of, the desiger must esure that the product is fit for purpose ad it has the followig properties i accordace with AS/NZS : Vapour barrier - low or medium Water barrier - high I hot humid areas of Australia, may ot be suitable, refer to the buildig desiger for a suitable membrae or Ask James Hardie o Soft compressible isulatio istalled betwee the frot of the wall studs ad directly behid the exteral claddig ca cause istallatio issues ad is thus ot recommeded. 3.3 FLASHING All wall opeigs, peetratios, itersectios, coectios, widow sills, heads ad jambs must be flashed prior to top hat ad sheet istallatio. Refer to Clause 2.5 for moisture maagemet requiremets. 4.2 PANEL ORIENTATION The pael must be istalled with the distictive white side facig the exterior of the structure. Where the back of the pael is ope to the weather, refer to Clause 11.2 for specific requiremets. 4.3 PANEL LAYOUT Paels are geerally istalled with a 10mm omial vertical ad horizotal expressed joit betwee adjacet paels, ie for 1200mm wide sheets ad 10mm pael joits the grid dimesio is 1210mm, see Figure 1. Vertical joits up to 20mm width ca be formed, with additioal care required at istallatio to esure the pael edges cover the ExoTec gasket sap strip o both sides of the joit. A miimum vertical expressed joit of 6mm is allowed with care. The vertical expressed joits may also be aliged or offset i a brick patter layout. S Wherever feasible, use stock pael sizes to miimise site cuttig. See Table 7. 5 FIXING 5.1 GENERAL ExoTec paels must be fixed to s ad itermediate JH top hats with either: 1. Coutersuk screws flush fiished with epoxy the with James Hardie base coat. Geerally used with site-applied acrylic coatigs. Refer to 5.2, 5.3 ad Figure Exposed head screws, e.g. pa, wafer ad hex heads. Used where pre-fiished paels are istalled. Exposed head fasteers may be colour coated to match pael fiish. ExoTec facade washers are recommeded to be iserted betwee the pael ad the fasteer. For iformatio relatig to the suitability of James Hardie's HardieBreak thermal strip, refer to the HardieBreak Istallatio Guide at ExoTec façade paels are istalled oto James Hardie top hat framig. It is recommeded that you refer to the project certifier to determie if a thermal break is required. If required, it is recommed that the thermal strip is istalled vertically behid the top hats ad i frot of the. 4 TOP HAT AND PANEL LAYOUT 4.1 GENERAL The pael layout must be cosidered i cojuctio with the buildig framig system, i.e. the supportig top hat spacig must suit joits betwee paels ad the desig wid pressures, see Figure 1. Where costructio joits occur i the structure, these must be carried through the top hats ad paels, see Figure 9 ad 12. Fasteers must have the appropriate level of durability required for the iteded project. Fasteers must be fully compatible with all other materials that it is i cotact with to esure the durability ad itegrity of assembly. Cotact fasteer maufacturer's for more iformatio. This is of particular importace i coastal areas, subject to salt spray ad other corrosive eviromets. For details o maximum fasteer spacigs to top hats for desig wid pressures, see Table 3 ad Figure 1. For fasteer istallatio, refer to Fasteer Fixig sectio i the ExoTec Facade Pael ad Fixig System Istallatio Guide. 5.3 COUNTERSUNK FASTENERS Refer to 5.2 for fasteer type. The screws are flush fiished over with epoxy ad the with James Hardie base coat. Use oly prove epoxies for this applicatio, i.e. Megapoxy P1. The screw head must be coutersuk to a depth of 2.5mm to 3mm, see Figure EXPOSED HEAD FASTENERS Refer to 5.2 for fasteer type. ExoTec facade washers are recommeded to be iserted betwee the pael ad the fasteer, see Figure 4. 6 6 JOINTS 6.1 PANEL JOINTS Paels are geerally istalled with a omial 10mm wide expressed joit betwee adjacet paels, vertically ad horizotally. Vertical joits to 20mm width ca be formed with the ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system, with additioal care required at istallatio to esure the pael edges cover the ExoTec gasket sap strip o both sides of the joit. 6.2 VERTICAL PANEL JOINTS At vertical pael joits, prior to fixig paels, the ExoTec gasket sap strip is fitted ito s by startig at oe ed ad pushig ito the alog its legth. Eds of the sap strips are butted together i top hats without ay eed for sealat. The ExoTec gasket sap strip is a hi-tesile roll-formed steel sectio with rubber gaskets built i. It provides a primary weather shield for a desig wid up to 4.0kPa, see Figure 6. Pael edges are fixed directly to the without the eed for packig at itermediate s. 6.3 HORIZONTAL PANEL JOINTS At horizotal pael joits, ExoTec backig strips are polyurethae sealat boded to the back of paels to form a socket to which the ext course of paels (or parapet cappig) are fixed over, see Figure 7. The ExoTec backig strip is a 0.55mm base metal thickess (BMT) hi-tesile roll-formed steel sectio, with a pre-formed stop to keep it fitted agaist the back of the top edge of the lower pael. 6.4 SEALANT FILLED JOINTS Where joits are required to be sealat filled, James Hardie joit sealat ad Bostik Seal flex are recommeded. Where vertical joits are sealed, a bod breaker tape must be istalled behid the sealat as outlied i Figure PANEL JOINTS IN HIGH WIND LOAD AREAS For desig wid pressures icludig ad above 4.0.kPa, horizotal ad vertical joits must be cotiuously sealed with a joit sealat over a bod breaker tape. Refer to Clause 6.4 for suitable joit sealat. Refer to sealat maufacturer s istructios for applicatio, safe use ad clea up. 6.6 MOVEMENT JOINTS Geeral Movemet joits are required to limit or remove stresses from the paels. Movemet joits are provided by the 10mm expressed or sealat filled joits at the perimeter of the paels Vertical structural joits Vertical structural joits are required i the claddig to coicide with structural joits i the structure to accommodate the aticipated movemet. The vertical structural joit is costructed as show i Figure 9. Vertical structural joits are also required where there is a discotiuity i the structure e.g. where two truss eds meet at a coectio which allows movemet. For details of abutmet to masory walls see Figures 10 ad Horizotal structural joits Horizotal structural joits are required at slab level where the framig supportig the top hats moves with the creep deflectio i the slab. See Figures 12, 13 ad 14 for details which ca cater for this deflectio. See Table 4 for the required height of the flashig upstad. The project egieer is resposible for specifyig the aticipated movemet Costructio joits Refer to Clause 10.3 Abutmets for fiishig paels agaist a existig buildig or aother claddig system. 7 JUNCTIONS 7.1 SLAB JUNCTIONS Head Where the claddig forms a juctio with a exposed slab, the detail must provide for sufficiet creep deflectio i the slab. See Clause for creep deflectio where top hat crosses i frot of the slab. See Figure 15 for typical detail which ca cater for this deflectio Base This juctio ca be treated i a umber of ways, two of which are illustrated i Figures 16 ad 17. See Table 4 for the required height of the flashig upstad. It is essetial that cotiuous flashig is provided behid the top hats at the base of walls to allow moisture to escape. 7.2 SOFFIT JUNCTION There are may ways of detailig the soffit juctio ad it is importat to esure that a drip edge or groove is provided. A typical approach o how to istall the soffit fascia juctio is show i Figure 18. Esure the ExoTec gasket sap strip is istalled cotiuously to the bottom of the fascia pael. It is essetial that cotiuous flashig is provided behid the top hats at the base of the fascia to allow moisture to escape. 7 8 CORNERS Corers ca be readily costructed usig a folded corrosio resistat metal agle behid the ExoTec facade paels, to support the corers see Figures 19, 20 ad 21. If a corer with a small radius is required, it ca be made i Glass Reiforced Cemet (GRC), supplied by other. For ease of costructio it may be preferred to fix the corer agle to oe or both of the ed top hats. Figure 22 shows a typical exteral corer detail usig Glass Reiforced Cocrete (GRC) mouldig. 9 WINDOWS The ExoTec facade pael ad fixig system provides a opportuity to cosider a rage of alterative widow treatmets. The buildig desiger, i cojuctio with the widow maufacturer, must cosider the adequate weatherproofig of the widow applicatio, see Clause 2.5. Typical widow details are show i Figures 23 to 25. See Table 4 for the required height of the flashig upstad. 10 SPECIAL DETAILS 10.1 CURVED FACADES For radii 10m or greater Where the curve radius is 10m or greater, 9mm thick paels are easily bet to the curve of the framig. The closer the spacig of top hats, the less likely they will read through as facets i the paels, particularly at small radii. 2. 9mm thick paels may be able to be curved to a smaller radius, but this is likely to overstress paels PARAPET CAPPING The desig of the metal parapet cappig should aim to miimise staiig of the claddig, as follows: 1. Esure the top of the cappig has a slope towards the roof. 2. Provide a drip edge 30mm miimum out from the claddig face. 3. I additio, all joits i cappig should be sealed. Figure 25 shows a typical desig which meets these requiremets. Refer to Table 6 for the required overlap. Typical details are show i Figures 26 ad INSPECTION After paels are istalled ad before paitig, the facade/fascia should be ispected to esure: 1. Required umber ad locatio of fixigs are correct. 2. Sealat has bee applied where specified. Particular attetio should be give to the 3mm fillet of sealat betwee the backig strip ad the pael alog the full legth of the horizotal backig strip socket. 3. The base coat applied over the epoxy ad fasteer has bee saded flush ad smooth. 4. Mior damage to pael edges is filled, saded smooth ad paited as for cut edges, see Sectio 11. Whe fixig curved sheets, commece fixig from the cetre esurig full cotact with top hats ad work outwards to avoid drummiess. Particular care should be take whe curvig paels to esure the supports are o a true curve. If ot, apart from poor appearace, there is a risk of locally over-stressig the paels ad causig crackig. Alterate materials ad istallatio methods are available for radii less tha specified above icludig glass reiforced cemet (GRC) istalled accordig to maufacturer s specificatios. 8 11 FINISHES 11.1 GENERAL To esure the durability of ExoTec facade paels, as per Clause 12.2 the paels must be fiished usig oe of the methods idicated below. ExoTec facade paels will readily accept a wide variety of applied fiishes, icludig site-applied textures ad factory fiishes. For site-applied fiishes (acrylic coatigs), follow the pait maufacturer s recommeded advice to adequately cover the saded smooth fillers applied over the cocealed fixigs, see Clause 5.3. I order to seal cut edges or saded patches two coats of a appropriate primer should be applied at the time of cuttig or sadig e.g. Dulux AcraPrime 501/1 (water based). The face ad edges of the paels must be coated i accordace with the pait maufacturer s recommedatios ad compatible with fiish coatigs. For further iformatio cotact the service cetre of the relevat pait compay, as follows: Dulux Trade Customer Service o Taubmas Customer Service o Wattyl Hotlie o Polyurethae paits are ot suitable as a site-applied fiish but ca be factory coated prior to istallatio. Pre-fiished paels are geerally istalled usig exposed head fasteers. James Hardie does ot recommed tilig i a exteral applicatio UNFINISHED PANELS EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT The ufiished paels must ot be exposed to direct sulight for ay period greater tha three moths. The face ad edges must be overcoated as recommeded by the pait compaies metioed above. However, if the rear clear sealer is exposed to direct sulight e.g. fascias, platrooms, etc., the the clear sealer must be coated with a miimum of oe coat of a exterior grade acrylic, pigmeted white, with a miimum of 10 years warraty, by oe of the pait compaies previously metioed. It is the resposibility of the specifier to idetify other weather related risks with ay particular buildig desig. Refer to pait maufacturer for pait specificatios e.g. surface preparatio, primer etc. 12 PRODUCT INFORMATION 12.1 MATERIAL ExoTec facade paels are high quality compressed, autoclaved, cemet based buildig paels maufactured by James Hardie.
