1 MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

2 Hout Bay House Research Project Unique research of timber construction in SA Proud partner of the Wood Conference Cape Town We offer premium products, unique solutions and longterm experience. HWZ International South Africa is a division of Kuratle Group, a Swiss company with presence all over the world. With its comprehensive network of experts and its long-term experience, the Kuratle Group and its partners intend to promote timber constructions and green building in South Africa.

3 First spruce certified according to SANS Certification of KVH, DUO/TRIO and BSH OSB Rough Sawn Spruce and Siberian Larch Finger-jointed beams Glue-laminated beams Cross laminated boards When construction wood is getting glued, strict regulations have to be observed: 1) The producer has to obtain permission from the authorities to produce glued load-bearing components. 2) The producer needs to develop his own testing and quality control system delamination and strength-grading tests are performed every day. 3) The producer is subject to regular inspections and the products are controlled by various respective authorities as well as by South African certification body SATAS. Most popular European whitewood Spruce is a coniferous evergreen tree used in construction as well as for interior design. There are 35 different sub-species of spruce; we offer mainly Picea Abies which grows in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Germany, Austria). Sustainability In Europe, spruce has been planted for centuries. The first legal act contributing to the sustainability of forests in Central Europe was issued in 1350 by Emperor Charles IV. Today, sustainability is ensured by local legislation as well as by the international PEFC certification, which is very similar to FSC. Bark Power industry, decorations (gardens) Main product The main product with best visual quality and mechanical stability. Sawmill Timber, KVH, lamellas for BSH, DUO/TRIO, Side Boards These come from the outer parts of the log. The visual quality is usually not as good as the main product, they tend to have more deformations and falling knots. Packaging, pallet boards, building industry, Wood Chips Power industry, cellulose production (paper, rayon), particle board, Treatment Rough sawn timber is kiln-dried to a moisture of 16 % (+ 2 %). Lamellas used in the production of glue laminated construction timber are kiln-dried to a moisture of 8 % (panels), 12 % (BSH, DUO/TRIO) and 15 % (KVH). Kiln-drying also destroys wood pests. As kiln-dried wood is not usually attacked by common wood pest species, European countries have adopted a technical and legislative opinion that such wood does not have to be chemically treated, which is an important step towards greater environmental friendliness of wooden constructions. However, kiln-dried timber can be treated when the customer requires it.

4 OSB ROUGH SAWN TIMBER KVH DUO and TRIO BSH CLT Boards Suitable for different types of construction. Characteristic strength values of South African Pine and European Spruce WOOD SPECIES, their characteristics and recommended field of use Spruce most popular European whitewood softwood for construction as well as design purposes turns yellow after being exposed to UV light without a treatment Spruce used on the exterior has to be treated Rough Sawn Timber Finger-jointed and glue-laminated beams Cross laminated timber Wood profiles Siberian Larch Larch grows in cold parts of Russia high density compared to Pine or Spruce Siberian Larch and Thermally Treated Pine are considered durable and are commonly used in the exterior without treatment (these woods turn grey after a few months) Rough Sawn Timber Wood profiles *CLT and BSH on request Thermally Treated Pine North European Pine treated with high temperatures (up to 200 C ) which change the chemical structure of the timber dimensionally stable - does not shrink or expand in reaction to the changing humidity softwood without splitters more fragile, not recommended for load bearing constructions Wood profiles Exterior mainly Thermally treated pine or Siberian Larch use ventilated air gap for facades cladding find our more about surface degradation at Decking! Our recommendation Thermally treated pine is perfect around swimming pool, Siberian Larch for using in areas, where you walk with outdoor shoes Cladding Thermally treated pine North European Pine treated with high temperatures (up to 200 C ) which change the chemical structure of the timber dimensionally stable - does not shrink or expand in reaction to the changing humidity softwood without splitters Where are you using the SECA profile? Pergolas and other garden constructions! Our recommendation Use Siberian Larch for constructions where you need higher bearing capacity and density. Advantage of Thermally treated pine is mainly the low weight and dimensional stability. Siberian Larch Larch growing in cold parts of Russia high density compared to pine or spruce Siberian Larch as well as thermally treated pine are considered as durable and are commonly used in the exterior without treatment (turn grey after few months) Flooring! Our recommendation Treat Siberian Larch flooring with white oil, the look fits perfectly to modern interior as well as Provence style design. Visit the Hout bay House to see the SECA Siberian Larch flooring with transparent or white oil as well as FeelWood oak flooring. Interior mainly Spruce or Siberian Larch for construction as well as design purposes Ceiling or Interior Cladding! Our recommendation Use UV protection or White oil based treatment to protect the light color of spruce.
