4 CONSTRUCTION General Lamps shall be installed after the completion of luminaires and conduit installation. Luminaires shall be kept free of conditions where moisture or dirt could damage the ballasts or reflecting surfaces of the optical system Structural Components The Contractor shall install aluminum angles and gussets on cantilever signs. The vertical members shall be attached to the signboard. All structural members shall be assembled using stainless steel hardware Wiring Trough On truss sign structures, the Contractor shall install aluminum wiring trough for the full length of the catwalk. Ends of lengths of wiring trough shall be tightly butted together at the centre of a catwalk support. The trough shall be securely fastened to the catwalk supports using stainless steel hardware. Ends of the trough shall be terminated with aluminum end covers, bolted in place. Sliding aluminum intermediate covers shall be installed and overlapped by 25 mm. Holes required for mounting the trough and for conduit connectors shall be made using a suitable jig or template which will assure the accuracy of the location and size of drilled holes. Where holes which are required for luminaire mounting fall on or near the butted joint of the wiring trough, the dimension shall be adjusted to provide 25 mm clearance from the holes to the end of the trough. Prior to the installation of wiring the Contractor shall de-burr and clean all inside surfaces of the trough Flexible Conduit All flexible conduit shall be prewired prior to installation on the structure. Flexible conduit connectors shall be installed using double lock nuts where tapped female connectors are not provided. Flexible conduit shall be securely fastened to the structure at intervals not exceeding 0.5 m Disconnect Switch The disconnect switch shall be installed on the wiring trough and securely bolted in place using stainless steel hardware Luminaire Installation Luminaires shall be accurately located on the wiring trough or on the cantilever sign supports to the dimensions indicated in the contract. Luminaires shall be securely bolted in place using stainless steel hardware. The luminaire aiming angle shall be set at 10 from the vertical and in no case shall luminaires be aimed to give more or less sign illumination Junction Boxes and Conduit Systems The Contractor shall install aluminum junction boxes and conduit systems on bridges, where a surface mounted power supply is indicated, in accordance with the requirements of subsection of OPSS 611. The Contractor shall install cast aluminum junction boxes on the vertical structure member of cantilever signs using stainless steel hardware. Page 4 Rev. Date: 09/1984 OPSS 612

5 A handhole extension box shall be installed on the front leg at the right hand side of overhead truss signs. An additional handhole extension box shall be installed where the feed to the sign enters the leg on the left hand side rather than the right hand side. Where signs are installed on bridges, embedded junction boxes and conduit systems shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of OPSS Wiring and Connections Riser cables shall be installed between the junction box, handhole or handhole extension box and the disconnect switch. Wiring shall be installed in the wiring trough using insulated spring connectors taped in place at luminaire taps. Connections of riser wires to feeder conductors shall be made with compression connectors insulated with insulating covers. In-line fuse holders and fuses shall be installed in the handhole, junction box or handhole extension box. For overhead truss signs an additional handhole fuse holder and fuse shall be installed, in the handhole or handhole extension box in the left leg where the feed to the sign enters the left hand leg and #6 AWG insulated conductors shall be installed from the left hand handhole extension box through the structure members of the sign to the handhole extension box on the right hand leg Grounding A #12 AWG Type TWH (green) ground wire shall be installed from the handhole extension box, handhole or junction box to all luminaires in the junction box. The #12 AWG ground wire shall be connected to the #6 AWG system ground wire at the ground stud or by means of ground connectors in the junction box in accordance with the requirements of section of OPSS 609. Ground wire taps to luminaires shall be made with compression connectors. For overhead truss signs where the system ground wire enters the left hand leg, a #6 AW Type TWH (green) ground wire shall be installed from the left hand handhole or handhole extension box through the structural members of the sign to the handhole or handhole extension box on the right hand leg. Sign grounding shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of sub-section of OPSS 609. All grounding work shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of section of OPSS Replacing Luminaires Where required in the contract, the Contractor shall remove existing luminaires and associated flexible conduit and wiring in accordance with the requirements of sub-section of OPSS 610 and install new luminaires and associated wiring, flexible conduit and fittings in accordance with the requirements contained herein. Where re-spacing of luminaires is required, existing conduit entry holes to the wiring trough shall be plugged with plastic plugs and new holes shall be drilled Relamping Where required in the contract, the Contractor shall remove existing lamps in accordance with the requirements of sub-section of OPSS 610, thoroughly clean the luminaires and install new lamps in accordance with the requirements of sub-section Page 5 Rev.
