2 out performs High Density Mineral Fibre Roofboards - The Problems THICKNESS 75 mm High density mineral fibre has a thermal conductivity of W/mK which means that insulation thickness has to be increased by at least to achieve the 100% same thermal performance as K-range Roofboards. EFFECTS OF MOISTURE Due to their open fibre structure moisture can penetrate high density mineral fibre roofboards. moisture by volume in man-made mineral 1% fibre insulants can reduce thermal performance by up to or more. 85% Are you getting what you specified? FIRE RESISTANCE They provide fire performance with low smoke emission. However to achieve the density required for flat roofing applications the mineral fibres are bonded together using an urea extended phenol formaldehyde resin which is combustible. COMPRESSION Warehouse fire in Holland in 1997 involving stored mineral fibre that completely destroyed the building. The fire, despite prompt attendance from the fire brigade, spread to adjoining buildings and property, damaging irreplaceable antique fairground equipment. High density mineral fibre roofboards have a compressive strength of only 100 kpa. On trafficked areas the mineral fibre can break down resulting in a permanent reduction in thickness and thermal performance.

3 high density mineral fibre... The Solution - Premium Performance Phenolic insulation THERMAL PERFORMANCE Kooltherm premium performance phenolic insulation has the lowest thermal conductivity (λ-value) of any commercially available insulant: W/mK. PREMIUM P E R F O R M A N C E MOISTURE RESISTANCE Kooltherm premium performance phenolic insulation has a greater than 90% closed cell structure which makes it highly resistant to moisture penetration. 35 mm FIRE PERFORMANCE The fire performance of Kooltherm premium performance phenolic insulation can be equivalent to mineral fibre. It achieves a Class O rating to the Building Regulations and achieves the best possible rating of less than 5% smoke emission when tested to BS 5111: Part 1:1974. COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH Kooltherm premium performance phenolic insulation has a compressive strength of 175 kpa which provides far greater resistance to compression under load.

The weight of a 1200 x 600 x 75mm high density mineral fibre roofboard is typically 9.7kg compared with 6.0kg for a 2400 x 1200 x 35mm Kooltherm K1 Roofboard. This extra weight can make the high density mineral fibre boards difficult to handle during installation. 6 HEALTH & SAFETY The Department of Health Committee on Carcinogenicity (COC) Annual Report 1994 recommended that mineral fibre be classified as a skin irritant under the EU Dangerous Substances Directive. All high density mineral fibre roofboards are subject to a Maximum Exposure Limit under COSHH Regulations. The handling of high density mineral fibre roofboards generates fibrous dust which may irritate the skin, throat and eyes. Protective clothing, eye protection and respiratory protection are all recommended when handling high density mineral fibre roofboards in certain situations to reduce skin, throat and eye irritation. (HSE Guidance Note EH 46, Nov. 90) The above measures are not required when using Kingspan Insulation products as they do not produce loose dust or irritable fibres. Unnecessary handling of unwrapped mineral fibre is not recommended.
