York Road Blog July 2015 update The superstructure is progressing very well and the lads and ladies have been busy helping the bricklayers and forming working relationships with them after the change of personnel from groundworks to bricklaying. Alex and Anita are pictured above applying the primer in preparation to receive the tanking system that is being used, they both really enjoyed listening to the reasons that tanking is required and were shocked to learn how much water can travel through a solid piece of brickwork. They both said that when they are living here they will always know what is keeping the building nice and dry!

Now that the bricklaying segment of the superstructure is underway I regularly take the self- builders out on the slab and we build a wall together. A few of them have taken great interest in the construction process of the building and are learning to put beds and perps on the blocks, I have also had them jointing the blockwork to the expected standard. Overall they are really enjoying this part of the construction process.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darren Perkins who is the Project Manager with On- Site Bristol for his help in obtaining ten brand new sets of bricklaying tools. The guys have been putting them to good use and feel a bit more involved because they own their own tools. A BIG THANK YOU

Here are a few pictures to highlight the different tasks that Saimone is participating in at our other project in Filton. He is learning a lot of different aspects of groundwork tasks and is progressing very well, Saimone has said that he is really enjoying the work and is now confident enough to lay footpaths/patios, driveways and kerbs confidently on his own. I must take this opportunity to thank Birkemp Groundworks Ltd for all the help they have given in guiding Saimone down this career path with a special mention to Pete and Dave Thanks Guys

Some photos of the Training The lads helping with the floor screeding in the two ground floor disabled flats. This was very interesting to watch and learn how they got it level. Some of the lads really enjoyed observing the metal partition being erected and learnt how to set it all out using a laser level. Saimone doing some block paviors up on the Filton development. He learnt how to bond them in the correct manner and get the correct fall for water runoff.

Birkemp were back on site to do some section 50 works just outside the site gates, they were happy to give some of the lads some 1:1 coaching on the operation of a 3 tonne excavator machine. This gave the lads a good feel for the machine and also highlighted how dangerous even a small machine like this can be.

As the lads are going on a telehandler course 13 th July for 1 week our site telehandler driver spent some time showing the lads what to expect on the course. He showed them the daily safety checks that need to be done and also gave them a bit of lifting and manoeuvre practice. Alex (above) has recently completed an SMSTS (Site Managers Safety Training Scheme) course with a score of 92%...well done Alex. We have started to introduce him to the day to day running of the site including completing site permits, inductions and safety checks. In the future we got plans for him to sit in on some site safety and client meetings so he can get a good overall feel for management.

Five of the self- builders attended a three day accredited Emergency First Aid at Work course, they all passed successfully and will receive a certificate that will last for three years. From the feedback I have received they all thoroughly enjoyed the activities included in the course and responded really well.
