1 SECTIO 7 RETAG WALLS 7 RETAG WALLS Throughout the Project, retaining walls will be a key visual element for both road users, adjacent residential properties, and pedestrians and cyclists. The design of retaining structures has been undertaken in consideration of all other elements such as bridges, noise walls and landscape works and provide a 7.1 Design philosophy The key design principles for the design of the retaining walls along the Project are as follows: All retaining walls must be designed to be a suite of elements Retaining walls must be designed as a simple, robust and integrated elements. stepping Wall plan layouts are simple, with straight or large radius curved alignments, without sharp changes of direction. entrances must be fully integrated into the adjacent landform The appearance of concrete retaining structures associated with noise walls is to have a strong vertical emphasis; and Fixings for retaining structures must be concealed, or expressed as part of the structure s design if concealment cannot be achieved. The majority of retaining walls will incorporate a simple vertical banding pattern to accentuate the vertical joints, generally with 50mm x 10mm (nom.) shadow rebates at 1000mm (nom.) centres. Reinforced soil walls (RSW) will use approximate 2m x at 1000mm centres. Retaining wall fascia panels will be coloured, typically a mid grey tone to blend into the adjoining landscape. Retaining wall details Detailed elevations and cross sections are illustrated in a series of general arrangement drawings included within this section. The four main retaining wall construction types represented in this section are: Reinforced soil wall Piled walls with precast concrete fascia panels In-situ concrete cantilevered toe wall Soil nail wall with fascia panel Sample panels were prepared for input by the Project Urban designer and the Urban Design Review Panel. In certain scenarios where the wall is adjacent to landscape areas, the panel extends above ground level behind to provide fall protection and remove the need for an additional hand rail.
