The Gomastit range The requirements on sealants and adhesives are continually increasing: Customers want products that could ideally be used for sealing and joining all construction materials. The durability of sealants and adhesives should be as high as possible without the loss of chemical and physical properties. In the construction industry, there are areas where universal adhesives and sealants can deliver the desired results. Other areas, such as parquet and wooden constructions, sanitary, natural stone, glass etc., require special products. The Gomastit range covers all areas of use on the construction site, from SMP liquid sealing to acrylic dispersion adhesive, from mould-resistant joint sealant to SMP sealant for glazing. merz+benteli develops, produces and distributes adhesives and sealants based on the following chemical bases: Sealants SMP Silicone Acrylic 5

SMP-based adhesives and sealants 8

Silane-modified polymers The technology for these adhesives and sealants was developed in Japan in the 1970s. Due to their chemical structure, adhesives and sealants based on a silanemodified polymer show a good resistance to weathering and ageing. They are highly flexible and can be easily painted over. Furthermore, SMP products are free of solvents, isocyanate and silicone. SMP-based adhesives and sealants offer a wide range of adhesion, are nearly odourless and non-corrosive to surfaces. Advantages colour compatibility wide adhesion range storage stability high elasticity (sealants) good mechanical properties very low in emissions 9

SMP-based universal sealant The increasingly stringent criteria that construction materials must fulfil also require new developments in the area of adhesives and sealants. The products must be environmentally friendly and as versatile as possible. At the same time, customers expect impeccable chemical and physical properties. Gomastit 2060 is merz+benteli s new, permanently elastic all-round SMP sealant and adhesive that fulfils all the present day requirements. Properties very low in emissions compatible with paints weather-resistant mould-resistant simple processing free of hazardous materials 10

Gomastit 2060 The all-rounder Gomastit 2060 is our all-rounder and a perfect SMP sealant for virtually all uses and typical materials. 12 Use in building construction Larger construction elements move around quite a lot in changing ambient conditions. The sealing compound must be able to resist this kind of movement. The joint can only fulfil its sealing function if it moves together with the construction elements and can maintain its grip on the joint-flanks. Gomastit 2001 and Gomastit 2017 were designed to fulfil these requirements and are perfectly suitable for connection, expansion and facade joints. Properties very low in emissions permanently elastic broad adhesion range long processing time compatible with paints 12

Silicone-based adhesives and sealants 22

Silicone Most silicones that are currently being processed from these polymers into sealants are 1-component and cure at room temperature through air humidity. The uses of silicone are just as numerous as the number of curing systems. Silicones are successfully used in sanitary, window, glass, metal and facade construction. Advantages UV-resistant weather-resistant simple processing solvent- and isocyanate free high elasticity good mechanical properties 23

Universal silicone-based sealant Universal products that are easy to process are in high demand in the construction industry. Their good UV- and weather-resistance, as well as their high elasticity and mechanical strength, are properties that make silicone sealants popular. Gomastit 400 is a tried and tested, permanently elastic silicone-based universal sealant that fulfils these criteria. Properties very broad adhesion range extremely high resistance to UV, ageing and weather conditions chemically neutral curing system simple processing non-corrosive on surfaces shock absorbing 24

Natural stone sealant Due to its structure, natural stone is susceptible to humidity. The plasticisers in silicone sealants contain silicone oils. They can diffuse into stone (so-called plasticiser migration), which can lead to unsightly discolouration. Therefore, a suitable sealant is required for natural stone jointing. Gomastit 407 is just this kind of product. The sealant does not show any migration tendencies with natural stone or wood-based materials. Properties very broad adhesion range extremely high resistance to UV, ageing and weather conditions chemically neutral curing system Simple processing non-corrosive on surfaces shock absorbing 26

Basics of joint technology according to SIA 274 w C Joint width 10 mm to 35 mm. Sealant depth = Joint width x 0.5 The depth of the sealant must not go below the minimum value of 8 mm. d C d S w S d S For joints in plastered areas, the adhesive pull strength of the joint-flanks must be at least 0.6 N/mm 2, otherwise an edge protection profile must be used. Apply the sealant to the base plaster or the edge reinforcement in a manner appropriate for the system. Maintenance joints are exposed to strong chemical and/ or physical strain. Therefore, the sealing system of maintenance joints must be checked regularly and, if necessary, replaced. For example, typical maintenance joints are those used for floating screeds, in wet cells, swimming pools, catch basins or in the chemical industry, in treatment plants, at petrol stations and in filling plants. 39 Curing speed Influence of moisture and temperature In the case of 1-component silicone and SMP products, the reaction takes place from the outside inwards. This means that the area that is directly exposed to moisture (air humidity / humidity in the assembly part) cures first. In the first 24 hours, depending on the product, you will achieve a curing of 2 to 4 mm at 23 C and 50 % relative humidity. The subsequent inward curing then begins to slow, as the humidity from the outside first has to make its way through the polymer that has already cured. H 2 O H 2 O The reaction speed is fundamentally determined by the temperature and the prevailing humidity. The warmer and the more humid the environment, the faster the product will cure. The drier and colder the environment, the slower the process. 39
